Personal History

Klomak was born on the planet Vulcan in the city of Shikar. He was given the name Klomak, meaning “Fortified Place” because as a small child he was physically strong and strong-willed. His family where Syrrannites, followers of a pacifist Vulcan sect, once feared by the now-defunct Vulcan High Command. Syrrannites were once seen as terrorists because of their supposed radical action in an attempt to make Vulcans adhere to the original teaching of Surak, the father of the Vulcan ethical system. A philosophy based purely on logical principles. Emotions were to be controlled and repressed. It is believed that Surak’s Katra is still carried by a Syrrannite leader. The Syrrannite movement brought about the Vulcan Renaissances, during which Syrrannites became accepted. Klomak and his older sister spent their early childhood in a strict Syrrannite community, steeped in its traditions, rituals and trained in its practices such as meditation techniques, synaptic pattern replacement, mind-melds and the Vulcan pinch technique.

Klomak suffered once from Pa’nar Syndrome caused by an inappropriate, unsupervised, mind-meld with a female teacher. He was an adolescent at the time. The female named T’Dow was disciplined by the community, and was banned from approaching Klomak. He never saw her again. Klomak received the appropriate treatment, a healing meld with a trained Syrrannite master. He recovered with no ill effects. He is highly secretive about this incident.

T'Kel, Klomak’s older sister, as a young adult suddenly rejected the Syrrannite way for a more modern Vulcan lifestyle, joining a group called the V'tosh ka'tur (Vulcans without logic). She left Vulcan never to return. This was a great disappointment to her parents and to Klomak.

Eleven years later, seeking further enlightenment, Klomak also left the Syrrannite enclave to study at the prestigious Shirkar Academy. This also was seen by his parents as a rejection of the true Syrrannite way, but still, they maintained contact with both their children until an untimely accident killed them both. They were transporting to a Syrrannite Conference when they disappeared, or more correctly they never arrived. Their disappearance was officially described as a transporter accident. But no technical reason was ever discovered that would account for a malfunction, nor was any transporter trace able to find their re-materialisation location. Klomak and his older sister had little contact with each other after their parents’ sudden, untimely and unusual death.

At the Shirkar Academy, he studied among other subjects’ cultural research and diplomacy. After graduating from the Shirkar Academy, he was offered a position in the Vulcan Diplomatic Core and was posted to the Vulcan embassy on Earth. There he met a Vulcan female named T'Pem with whom he would form a lifelong friendship. He performed well at the embassy and took an interest in reading widely and in particular human history and the formation of the Federation. This led to a greater interest in Starfleet. His knowledge was often sought by the embassy staff.

Klomak made many trips to various locations on earth. One memorable trip Klomak made to the interior of Australia ended in a painful experience with a nest of Jumping Jack ants. He was bitten several times and had an extreme reaction to the toxin in their stinger.

During his studies of human history, he discovered a personal affinity with the Shaolin Buddhist priesthood in earth’s ancient Asian history and the ideas of physical stamina for enhancing meditation and ability and the use of martial arts for personal protection and defence, which mirrored his own training in meditation, exercise and passivism on Vulcan. He was inspired to revisit the Vulcan way of his parents, with some modification of his own, incorporating an increased emphasis on self-discipline, meditation, logic, self-defence, physical health and stamina to a greater degree than he previously held with a moderate helping of ‘faith’. During this period, he took a vow of celibacy, which causes him great distress during his usual Pon Far every seven years.

His new found way was held with some suspicion by some of his superiors at the Vulcan embassy on earth, to whom he attempted to explain his new found way, including the Vulcan Ambassador. Otherwise most Vulcan’s usually do not recognise any differences in Klomak, to them he would seem like any other typical Vulcan. But Vulcans who had come to know Klomak would recognise his peculiar variances.

To gain peace and a place of greater ‘tolerance’, within a system of discipline and learning, he chose to give up his position at the Vulcan embassy, to join Starfleet. He was aged of 62 earth years. The day he left the embassy, his good friend T’Pem gave him a simple-looking antique Vulcan Meditation lamp imported from the Vulcan Temple of T’Panit. It remains his most prized possession.

He majored in Security at the Academy, which to many would seem incongruous for a pacifist. Klomak would logically explain to them that, firstly, it was illogical to assume that force should never be used and secondly, that it was far better to have a pacifist as a security officer because that officer would always be trying to de-escalate violence and thirdly, when force became logically necessary that officer would use the least amount of force necessary to resolve the situation. He minored in Engineering and Tactical because, logically assuming he would be posted to a Starship or Star base, he understood that officers needed to understand their environment and to be able to use it to their advantage.

T’Pem became such a part of his life on earth that he would have asked her hand in marriage if he had not taken a vow of celibacy. Many things they shared together but he never mentioned to her, both his desire to marry or his vow of celibacy.

Leaving on assignment from Starfleet Academy and earth, his greatest pain was leaving T’Pem.
