Personal History

Michael was born in Madison, Wisconsin on Earth, to James and Amanda Kent. His mother was a nurse, and his father was a doctor. Amanda had enlisted in Star Fleet after she turned 18 as a chance to explore the Federation and have some adventure. She trained as a nurse with the Star Fleet medical corps and served for another 3 years before she met James Kent during a brief leave of absence on Earth. He was a doctor on Earth, and the two met at a medical conference. When Amanda returned to duty, the two dated long-distance between missions for another year before Amanda opted out of re-enlistment in order to move back to Earth and settle down with James.

The two dated for a few more years before getting engaged, and then married, and Michael was born shortly thereafter. His parents encouraged him to focus on his studies, both hoping that he would go into the medical field, and perhaps become a doctor himself. He very quickly came to grow fond of the physical sciences, physics in particular. His world turned upside down in junior high when the Borg invaded. His mother learned of the Borg's movement toward Earth with enough time to get them off world safely, but Michael had to look back in horror at the fate of his home, wondering if he was ever going to see Earth again. Fortunately, the Borg threat was defeated, and his family was able to return home. The impression that Star Fleet had made on Michael those years stayed with him and when the time came a few years later to decide what it was he wanted to do he was torn. His interests in physics was enough that he knew he wanted to do research and have a career in academia, but he also felt drawn toward service in Star Fleet; the exploration, the chance to study the stars and cosmos up close, and the service to protect the Federation and it's citizens like those who had given him back his home. It wasn't an easy choice, but with the advice of his parents, he decided not to join Star Fleet, and instead pursue his Ph.D. and research interests.

While at the university Michael bonded slowly with his classmates, ultimately becoming great friends with a few of them, chief among them was Tracy Lanner. Tracy came to be like a sister to Michael after just a few years, and the two often helped and supported each other through their academic and personal struggles. With his friends beside him, he had some of the best times of his life. In his junior year, Michael also met Hailie Mathews. Hailie was a journalism student in the same year, and the two quickly hit it off and started dating. It wasn't long before Michael realized he was falling in love with her. When he got accepted to graduate school he celebrated at first with Tracy and his other classmates who had also been accepted to their various schools, then he faced the scariest moment of his life so far, when he told Hailie and waited to hear what she said. He was elated again when she said she wanted to come with him, and find a job in their new city.

A few months later after they'd graduated, they both moved to their new city where Michael enrolled in graduate school, and Hailie quickly found work as a reporter. After his second year Michael had completed his Masters work on his track, and the two went out to celebrate. That night Michael proposed, and she said yes. The two spent the next year happily planning their wedding, or so Michael thought. Just before the end of his third year Michael discovered Hailie cheating on him. It broke him. For months he was numb, and then he choked on rage and regrets. At the end of the summer, he almost decided not to return to the program, but Tracy helped keep him going. She helped him from a distance to work through his turmoil and stay focused on the task. She introduced him to Vulcan philosophy as a way to try and keep him too busy to dwell on the past. Over that year Michael came to grow very fond of the philosophy, and while he never seriously contemplated repressing his emotions, he did adapt many of the ideas and techniques to helping him maintain control of himself and his projection of them. He also began to grow more distant from most of the people he knew, and was less open to new people and experiences, choosing to shield himself from the world than allow himself to be hurt again.

It was near the end of that year, after he'd started to pull himself back together that Michael realized he didn't want to stay on Earth anymore. He needed to leave Earth and the core worlds to see the Universe, to explore, and to learn how to live again, so he joined Star Fleet. He also decided to finish his thesis and get his Ph.D. the training and expertise would be valuable for him to have in Star Fleet, and it would allow him to come back and find the professorship he'd dreamed of since he was a boy, when he was ready. He continued his research and maintained his advisor at his graduate institution while he started his education with Star Fleet. He completed his Ph.D writing his thesis on neutrio energy transport asymmitries in Type II Supernovae within the year, and had successfully defended it by the end of his first year at the academy.
