A Kelvin (or K) is a unit for temperature, named after Earth physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin.
With zero Kelvin as "absolute zero", or the absence of any thermal motion (heat):
- 0 Kelvin is equal to -459.67° Fahrenheit
- 0 Kelvin is equal to -273.15 °Celsius
The Kelvin scale is an absolute thermodynamic temperature scale, meaning it uses absolute zero as its null point.
The kelvin is the primary unit of temperature for engineering and the physical sciences.
Practical Uses
- The surface of a Y class planet is categorized by a surface where the temperature exceeds 500 Kelvin, with an extremely turbulent, toxic atmosphere.
- The external temperature of a Federation shuttlecraft, utilizing metaphasic shielding, can tolerate radiation levels that approach ten thousand radiation units, and temperatures of 1.9 million Kelvin, while maintaining an internal cabin temperature of 21 °C.
- 1.9 million Kelvin = 1.8+ million °C or 3.4+ million °F
