Rojan and Kelinda, Kelvans in humanoid form.
A 'distilled' cuboctahedron.
Note: This is NOT a PC and NPC rated species.

The Kelvans are an intelligent and rigidly-disciplined non-humanoid species from the planet Kelva, located in the Andromeda Galaxy. Their government was known as the Kelvan Empire.
Only a few Kelvans were known to have traveled to the Milky Way Galaxy. Encountered by Starfleet in 2268, much of the Federation's knowledge of this species stems from the encounter
conducted by Captain Kirk and his crew.

Basic Information

Biology

Described by Spock as "immense beings", Kelvans are, in one form, at least twice the size of an adult Klingon male. Their complex minds have enough discipline to operate each of their hundred tentacle-like limbs independently of each other. However, when their superior intellect was developing, it also made the species more emotional, as well.

Scientific advances allow this species to shed their original physical form in favor of new bodies more appropriate to local environments. One Kelvan described this process as "encasing" themselves in humanoid shells. Once complete, a Kelvan is completely passable as a Human, and their personality will shift towards a more humanoid perspective, as well, as they settle into their human-like body.

Culture

Kelvans believe that they are superior to most other species, and that as such, other species should be conquered and ruled over. They approached this in a logical manner, and without the seeming want for battle or bloodshed. As they saw it, as long as their subjugated species were obedient, said species were treated with respect and given some freedoms.

Technology

As of the encounter in 2268, Kelvan technology was well beyond the understanding of the Federation.

One observed piece of technology was something referred to as a 'field projection,' a device worn on the belts of Kelvans when they were in humanoid form. This device was multi-functional, serving as a weapon, a defensive protection, and an instrument for obedience. It was capable of immobilizing multiple targets within a neural field, and could selectively neutralize nerve impulses to chosen muscles. Offensively, it was also able to "distill" a lifeform, reducing them down into a lightweight cuboctahedron shape. The victim in question could be reconstituted at a later time, as long as their cuboctahedron remained unharmed. Kelvans wearing these devices could network them together in order to increase their effectiveness.

Kelvan multi-generation starships were capable of sustained operations and life support across multiple millions of light years. Their warp drives allowed these ships to cross great distances in a much shorter amount of time than Federation ships. One Kelvan multi-generational ship was estimated to be able to travel from the Andromeda Galaxy to the Milky Way Galaxy over the course of a few generations, whereas a Federation ship traveling at maximum warp would take an estimated thousands of years to make the same journey.

Known History

Centuries ago, Kelvans became aware of dangerously rising radiation levels in their galaxy. This crisis was expected to make their galaxy uninhabitable ten thousand years. The Kelvan Empire dispatched a wave of multi-generational starships to neighboring galaxies in order to search for new territories and report back. In the Earth calendar, one Kelvan ship left the Andromeda Galaxy in the 1960s, reaching the Milky Way Galaxy in 2268. Unprepared for the galactic barrier that protects the Milky Way, the Kelvan ship was destroyed while attempting to cross it. Five Kelvans survived by using escape vessels, and landed on a nearby Class M planet. Adopting the humanoid form common the the Alpha Quadrant, they attempted to survive.

Sending out a false distress call, the Kelvans lured Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise to their new planet. The Starfleet ship was captured and augmented with Kelvan technology, and the Kelvan survivors started their journey back home. Once the Enterprise crossed the galatic barrier, the Federation crew tried to appeal to the Kelvans' newfound humanity. Kirk explained that there was no reason for the Kelvans to use such force, and that there are hundreds of planets where the Kelvans could live out their lives in their humanoid forms. The Kelvans reject this idea, and continue their journey past the barrier and towards Andromeda.

While in transit, the Starfleet officers discover that the Kelvans have little experience with the simple pleasures of a humanoid form, such as eating, drinking, heightened emotions, and physical satisfaction. Using these as a way of weakening and distracting the Kelvans, the Enterprise crew are successful in overloading the Kelvans with previously unexperienced feelings. Now successfully divided and at odds against each other, the Kelvans are
made to realize how Human they are acting. James T. Kirk reminds them that their mission was to find a new home for their people, and proposes that a robotic ship be sent in their place in order to report on the habitability of
the Milky Way Galaxy. With their newly-discovered emotions and satisfaction with humanoid life, the Kelvans accept help from the Federation, and agree to settle back down on their Class M planet.

By the 24th century, there had been at least one additional encounter with Kelvans by Starfleet personnel. In 2374, Lieutenant Commander Worf told Jadzia Dax that he had once fought Kelvans twice his size.
