Personal History

Jackson Deforest Kelley was born in Toccoa, Georgia to David and Clora Kelley. His mother went into labor two months early and his birth came so rapidly that his parents didn’t have time to go to the hospital so he was born at their home. Fortunately, Clora’s physician brother was visiting at the time and delivered his nephew without any complications. A favorite family story, the events of Jackson’s birth was told and retold many times at family gatherings, and other social occasions.

That uncle, William Alan would play an important part in shaping Jackson’s future. When Jackson was twelve, he was diagnosed with xenopolycythemia. A once fatal disease, Doctor Alan stayed with his nephew during the long painful treatments that eventually cured him. While Jackson recovered, his uncle would visit him and talk about the patients he’d helped and the advancements in medicine. This sparked an interest in medicine and Jackson decided he wanted to be a physician like his uncle. As Jackson approached his eighteenth birthday, he knew two things. He wanted to be a doctor and he didn’t want to spent the rest of his life in Toccoa. He had a restless spirit that wanted to travel and experience new things. Therefore, when a Star Fleet recruiter came to his high school, and told him that Star Fleet would put him through medical school, make an officer out of him and he could travel the galaxy. That was all the incentive that Jackson needed. He signed up enthusiastically. However, his parents were not so enthusiastic. They supported his decision to be a doctor, but the idea of him serving in Star Fleet worried them. Space was a dangerous place filled with all sorts of nasty surprises. Eventually with the help of Jackson’s favorite uncle William, they came to support their son’s decision. In so much that, they beamed with pride at his Star Fleet Graduation Ceremony.

At the Academy, Jackson proved to be a very bright pupil. Medicine seemed to come natural to him. He excelled at sciences and medicine; however, his engineering classes were a different story. He disliked and struggled in them. As for his other courses, he enjoyed his security and tactical classes, but medicine was his true passion. Though he graduated in the middle of his class overall, he was graduated third in medical school.

After graduation, Midshipman Kelley was assigned to the USS Springfield, FF-6138. He enjoyed his time onboard and rose to the rank of Ensign. It was here that he met Joan Collins a young tactical officer. Though he found her beautiful, she was engaged but they became fast friends and eventually his best friend.

At Starbase 157, the Springfield was assigned to the USS Dauntless task force. During the battle with the Romulans, the Springfield was severely damaged. Jackson’s best friend Joan was killed and while evacuating injured crewmembers from Sickbay which had just caught fire, debris from the ceiling fell and hit him on the head knocking him unconscious. When he woke up, he was surrounded by fire. With no other alternative, he covered his face and hands as best as he could and raced through the hot flames toward the exit. As he passed through the flames, the back of his uniform caught on fire. He could feel his flesh burning but shear will and survival instincts pushed him on. Once in the corridor, he dropped to the deck and rolled as other crewmembers helped beat out the flames. Twenty percent of his body was burned, mostly on his back.

Jackson was then evacuated to the USS Dauntless’s Sickbay and then to StarBase 157. There his burns healed. Fortunately, the scaring to his hands and face could be cosmetically repaired, however due to the extreme heat and damage, his back was left permanently scarred.

The death of Joan and his own terrifying ordeal on the Springfield left Jackson emotionally as well as physically scarred. He was then promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and transferred to Starbase Alpha’s hospital as a base physician.

Jackson found life on the Starbase dull and mundane and quickly put in for a transfer but nothing happened. Finally, he saw that Star Fleet Academy was looking for instructors, so he applied and was selected.

After two enjoyable years at the Academy, the lure of the stars and desire to serve on a starship again led Jackson to apply for an opening as Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Yeager. He was surprised and excited that he was selected for the transfer. It was difficult to leave his friends and colleagues at the Academy, but he knew he had to return to space duty. He had to face the horrors of his past and put them behind him.

After Jackson's stint on the USS Yeager, he transferred to the USS Endeavor and served as Chief Medical Officer until the ship was heavily damaged during battle with Krynar forces. He then was assigned to Star Fleet Medical. After a few years there he decided to return to Star Fleet Academy as an instructor.
