Personal History
Laurena was born into what would be considered a middle class family. Her mother and father were exemplary parents and made sure that each of their two children wanted for nothing. That is to say, they had everything they needed, but not necessarily all they desired. Though given a terrific upbringing, the Kalil family social and financial status prevented them from doting upon their children as observed in some higher classed families. Laurena can be described as having an insatiable curiosity. This same curiosity caused her to be in somewhat of a difficult situation. Laurena was quite young when she decided to explore a forest alone when her family went on holiday. During this time she disturbed an animals nest with offspring. Though as accident, Laurena had stumbled upon the nest by accident and tried to leave immediately. Unfortunately, a cat like creature struck her with a three claw slash across her abdomen. Per Laurena's request, she asked her doctor at that particular time to repair underlying conditions, but leave a scar. The scar is a reminder to Laurena to keep her curiosity in check.
Laurena became incredibly ill in her 20's with Zanthi fever. Because of its rarity in young women on Betazed, she went for nearly a year without treatment that resolved the issue. Due to this, she now has what could be considered scarring in her psyche. She is primarily motivated by the study of different mental disciplines and medicinal neurology due to her condition. While ill, she was able to consult a graduate of Kholinar on how to control her thoughts. Laurena attributes this to the only reason that she maintained her sanity.
However, Laurena would never have been exposed to this if it had not been the idea of her physician. Freshly graduated from the University of Betazed herself, Gennella Himmun began treating patients in the area nearby Laurena and her family lived. At the onset of symptoms Laurena consulted Ginnella for treatment. At first, Laurena only complained of a minor headache. Once Laurena started treatment for the headaches but nothing improved the Fever certainly became much worse. Naturally, Zanthi Fever typically causes the infected individual to project their emotions outward. In this instance however, and due to her age, it actually completely inhibited Laurena's ability to screen out others. She became the victim of every thought of anybody nearby. After a short time in which it became obvious that treatment was going to be near impossible without a correct diagnosis, Gennella sought the assistance of a Kholinar recipient to possibly preserve Laurena's mental state until such time a treatment and diagnosis could be found. Although the lessons and efforts of the Vulcan techniques were successful, it was no substitute for real friendship. Although Gennella was Laurena's doctor, the two became fast friends. Though the relationship was strained due to obvious conflicts with uncontrolled emotions, their relationship was solidified in their struggle. After nearly giving up, Gennella had an epiphany that she had Zanthi Fever and she was able to treat it easily.
Once recovered from the Fever, Laurena developed a curiosity for medicine. Upon mentioning that fact, Gennella encouraged her to pursue a career in that field. Laurena finally stepped up and signed up for StarFleet. They remain close friends to this day.
Laurena is most characterized by her compelling need to explore that which she has not experienced. She find the concept of living without telepathic abilities to be quite a disadvantage. Because of this she believes discovering the methods by which other species survive and even thrive without the use of telepathic communication to be of the utmost importance. Laurena became a doctor with StarFleet primarily for the exposure to different cultures with a goal in mind of being able to publish a study of how multiple species can benefit from one another by sharing and perhaps adopting different practices that may be beneficial. More specifically, mastering control of the mind through significant mental discipline techniques and lead to the next level of evolution for many civilizations. StarFleet was one of the best ways to accomplish this goal, but she also benefited from the ability to attend StarFleet Academy despite her societal disposition on Betazed. Though her family is far from despondently poor, they certainly didn't possess the influence nor financial capability of being able to support her aspirations for extended education on Betazed. For this reason, she elected to pursue a career with StarFleet.

Long-Term Goals: Finish an anthropoligical case study revealing the different mental disciplines in each culture for their own unique benefits. The purpose of the study would be to reveal the ability to adapt another species mental exercises to benefit another.

Sense of Humor: Typically dry, witty, possibly perceived as manipulative
Phobias: Recurrence of Zanthi Fever (though typically for older Betazeds, she was diagnosed in her 20's with it.) Cause as of yet unknown, but in that time she nearly lost herself in the sea of thoughts that she couldn't screen out due to the infection. The infection was more difficult to treat due to the fact she was not tested for it due to it being extremely rare in younger Betazoid women.

Disappointments: Not able to graduate with other students her age due to Zanthi Fever
Illnesses: Formerly afflicted with Zanthi Fever and now cured. The sickness left its mark though in the form of horribly crippling memories

Distinguishing Features: A rather significant scar of what appears to have come from the claw of a cat like claw. The mark is usually hidden beneath the uniform. The scar is actually from an animal indigenous to Betazed.
