Personal History

Kate's father and mother were medical doctors and they moved the family around a lot during her childhood, taking up a number of positions working in dangerous frontier colonies or those ravaged by disease. Despite this, Kate had a secure and loving upbringing which instilled in her a strong sense of duty and generosity towards others.

Her eldest brother Jay is a writer and her brother Padraig is a research biologist. Kate showed talent as a musician from a early age and her parents encouraged this and did not put pressure on her to chose any particular career path. As a teenager Kate performed well in science subjects such as biology. On leaving school she chose to pursue scientific interests rather than music, applying to Star Fleet Academy and passing the entrance exams on the first attempt.

Kate specialised in human/alien sciences at the Academy and excelled in her studies. On graduation she spent 3 years on the science vessel USS Franklin and another year on the scout ship USS Vespucci. After this time she realised she was not interested in a scientific career on a starship and applied to be an Academy Instructor. Kate sees helping to train new generations of cadets as a crucial role, and enjoys helping others to realise their potential in life.
