Personal History

K'Naan was just a small cub during the first Klingon/Mirak war, one of many litters left to grow up without a father. His father, a Commander in the Mirak Star League served aboard a cruiser as a tactical officer battling the Klingon Empire - J'Taar missed the birth of his four cubs as a result. As the brutality of the war continued, J'Taar became embroiled in a scandal involving several Mirak being paid off by the Klingon Empire to serve as espionage agents against their own people. J'Taar was promised fortunes beyond anything he could have possibly imagined, and during his trial he pleaded with his jury that he was thinking of his family's well being. His mate R'Lari roared in anger from the witness stand, disavowing herself of any connection to the traitor and condemning the man to his fate. This act of patriotism protected her from sharing in J'Taar's eventual execution, but in the eyes of the Mirak Courts it was not in the interests of the people to allow the name of J'Taar to be free among the Mirak people and found themselves with no choice other than to banish R'Lari and her cubs from Mirak society.

R'Lari wandered the quadrant in search of somewhere to pick up her life again and found herself in truly alien surroundings. The primate species dominating this region of the galaxy were all so different to her that she initially found herself in true lament. While wandering the halls of a Federation star base several months later however, she chanced across a school classroom that agreed to take her then still young cubs for a few hours while she had a break. In the classroom K'Naan and his siblings spent time with humans for the first time, and enjoyed themselves more than they had done for a long time. Seeing her cubs' joy, R'Lari realised that she had to put the needs of her litter before her own and moved to the Mars Colony after successfuly being granted asylum and eventually citizenship by the Federation.

K'Naan grew up deeply interested in his past, learning as much as he could from his mother and developing a deep-seated hatred for the betrayal of his father. He demonstrated a flair for negotiation and leadership as he moved through school and eventually grew old enough to make a conscious decision about his family's dismissal from Mirak society. At the age of eighteen he was accepted into the University of Mars to study Political Science and Interstellar Relations and graduated third in his class. His goal was to enter the Federation diplomatic core, and after being offered a job as a junior negotiator he took the first post he could that would send him to Miraki Prime.

It did not go well. During the first few weeks of his stay on his estranged homeworld K'Naan managed to arrange himself a meeting with the same high court judge that had originally exiled him and his family, and during the first meeting the judge recognised the young diplomat's scent and had him arrested. After an informal hearing, K'Naan convinced the judge to at least engage in a dialogue and the two men spent hours debating the nature of his father's crime. Despite the headway K'Naan could not make the judge rescind the banishment on his family, and was forced to leave his homeworld or share in his father's fate.

K'Naan returned to Mars Colony, dejected. His mother did her best to reassure him of his worth but K'Naan spent months in near solitude, analysing his mistakes and trying to discover anything he could have done to improve himself as a negotiator, a diplomat, but most importantly as a Mirak. It took a wander through his old university campus for him to decide that the only way he could restore his family's honour would be to prove to the Mirak Star League that the TaarLari dynasty did not need to share in the fate of one man, and signed up to the closest comparable institution in order to prove his point. In K'Naan's logic, by serving as a Star Fleet officer in the same capacity as his disgraced father and achieving above and beyond him in the field, the Mirak would then be forced to acknowledge the legitimacy of K'Naan's achievement.

Life at Star Fleet Academy was largely uneventful for him. Having gone through a similar experience at a civilian institution meant that he was a little older but more socially grounded than a lot of his peers. As a member of the tactical core he found himself excelling at tactical strategy, discovering that the battlefield could be planned almost in the same way a diplomatic negotiation could be - anticipating your opponent's moves, planning and reacting accordingly. His large muscular frame made him a powerful friend to have, and was considered in high regard by most of the other cadets whether it was because of his sheer physical presence or his constantly switched on attitude to duty.

Graduating with a first class merit, K'Naan took his first post aboard the USS Farragut. He spent most of his time at the helm of the frigate, and despite not being his first choice he enjoyed himself to a degree. The Farragut was involved in various skirmishes against the Romulans, earning him a few medals of commendation and bravery as well as a promotion. It was at this point that K'Naan took a posting on the deep space explorer USS Serengeti, where his full lieutenancy was awarded after taking over a successful first contact where the ships ambassador died in a tragic transporter malfunction.

K'Naan is now Chief Tactical Officer aboard the USS Ticonderoga, and as the high point in his career he values the opportunity to continue further up the career ladder - with each successive promotion K'Naan is taken one step closer to restoring his family honour and proving to himself that he is better than the man who betrayed his friends, his family and his entire race by sacrificing his principles.

Long-Term Goals: To Achieve the politcal influence that comes with Starfleet Admiralty and unite the Federation/Mirak
Personality: Distinctly analytical, K'Naan has an unyielding sense of honour and duty - sometimes to his detriment.
Sense of Humor: Complicated - K'Naan has a tendency to over-analyse humour, often missing the joke entirely.
Phobias: Canine species and subspecies naturally cause his fur to stand on end.
Likes: Food - particularly meat, hunting wild game and problem-solving/strategy games
Dislikes: Eating fruit/vegetables - K'Naan is a typical feline in this respect. He also has a distaste for coarse and crude behaviour.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Failing to restore his family's name in Mirak society the first time around, discovering that his father's crimes meant that the Mirak High Courts were beyond simply negotiating his freedom to return to Miraki Prime.
Best Time: His time spent at the University of Mars.
Most Crucial Experience: Being separated from his species at a young age and growing up in a human dominated society has largely made him the person he is today. He is unavoidably more 'human' than other Mirak but the strong upbringing instilled by his mother has made sure he still acts in a manner becoming to a male Tigris.
Role Model: His mother R'Lari, who without K'Naan would have almost certainly have grown up without any sense of direction or purpose in life.
