Personal History
Summary
Valiant is a deeply hurt and troubled man. He feels Star Fleet has failed its duty to protect the Federation, and has little trust in the organization itself now. The only reasons he currently remains in Star Fleet is because he intends on using its resources to hunt down and get revenge on the man that killed the woman he loved; because he hopes that someday he can help bring Star Fleet’s focus back to where it should be—protecting the Federation; and finally because after Natalie’s death, Star Fleet, his ship, and crew, was all he had left in his life, and he didn’t want to give that up as well.
Expanded
Grew up on Earth and had the average childhood, was never in need, grew up in a stable household, and lived an overall very comfortable life. Ever since he could remember he always had a deep interest in flying, space and piloting, and after graduating high school, Valiant went off to a small college in Indiana where he furthered his studies in piloting, navigation, and space. After graduating from college, he went on to be a freighter pilot for a well-known Earth freight and passenger company. Though he was doing what he had always wanted to do, piloting, the job got very boring and tedious to him, flying the same routs, same slow ships and all, and was wanting a bit more excitement in his life. Well, he got his wish, an accident happened, one he has never mentioned to anyone other than family, not even his best friend, Dan Wueste, and it gave him enough excitement in life to cause him to reevaluate his current job, and his desires in life. Coming to a decision Valiant chose, after a year working there, to quit his job, and join Star Fleet, as it would allow him to fly more interesting ships, and have the excitement of exploration and the unknown. Valiant went to the Academy and took up Tactical training, and majored in starship piloting. He took the most advanced piloting courses he could take, in which he had an edge over his other classmates having more experience in flying. While in the Academy Valiant became good friends with a cadet studying to be a security officer, Dan Wueste, who seemed a bit out of place because of his age. After his time in the Academy Valiant graduated with some of Star Fleet’s highest awards in starship piloting, was a member of Star Fleet Pilot Corps, and was even offered special placement in Star Fleet Tactical as a fighter pilot, but he respectfully declined the offer wanting to fly a starship much more than a small fighter.
Upon graduation from the Academy Valiant was given the rank of Ensign and was assigned to the USS Yoritomo where he served as helmsmen. Upon completion of his first mission on the Yoritomo, Valiant was then temporarily assigned to the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-E, on a special joint mission between the crews of the USS Yoritomo and USS Valley Forge to recover a stolen Federation Starship. During that mission, Valiant was promoted to Lt. JG. and was becoming a respected officer. After the Enterprise mission, Valiant was then reassigned to a new ship, the USS Philadelphia under command of Captain Gage, and was given the position of Chief Tactical Officer. While serving on the USS Philadelphia he was promoted to the rank of Lt. Commander. After his first mission serving on the Philadelphia, which consisted of the start of the Romulan war, saving a freighter crew before the ship exploded, containment of a deadly virus on the ship which took several officer’s lives including the First Officer at the time, Commander Terra, and even meeting up with an old friend who was a CO of a ship, Dan Wueste, Valiant was offered the position of First Officer on the USS Titan under command of Commander Otlan, and gladly accepted it. After his first mission as First Officer of the Titan, Valiant was promoted to Commander. After his first mission on the Titan was wrapped up, he was given a bit of shore leave, but it was quickly canceled when the Borg chose to invade earth, which sent the Titan off on its second mission, one that was to forge an alliance with the Tholian Empire. Mid-mission, during a critical time in talks with the Tholians, the Yoritomo on its course to the Mirak detected the Titan, thinking the Titan was under attack, they dropped out of warp nearby to offer assistance to the Titan. The Tholians on the other hand thought of the Yoritomo as a threat and attacked. During the attack, the Commanding Officer was killed and First Officer was severely wounded. Captain Otlan quickly straightened everything out with the Tholians, and then, since the Yoritomo was in need of a Commanding Officer, he placed Valiant in command of the Yoritomo so the ship may finish its mission, a mission to forge an alliance with the Mirak.
Once arriving in the Mirak system, and after conducting preliminary talks, Valiant invited the Mirak Baron, Baron Goldentail, over for dinner on the Yeager. Feeling it was proper to give the Baron a gift, Valiant replicated catnip for them, thinking it would be like a perfume to them. He later discovered when they opened and smelled their gift it had the effects of a strong narcotic. After Valiant had made his case to the Baron, the Baron said he would think about helping the Federation, and that if he were going to help he would return in 24 hours. With that, he returned to his ship and headed back into Mirak space.
After 24 hours had passed and no one had arrived Valiant had the Yoritomo set course back to Earth. As they traveled back to Earth, the Mirak fleet had managed to catch up, and stated they would give their support in the matter.
Once the Yoritomo arrived at Earth, a great battle ensued. During the course of the battle, the Yoritomo sustained massive damage and the order to abandon ship was given. Valiant stayed behind however, to pilot the ship into the nearest Borg vessel in hopes to do as much damage as possible in a last ditch effort. As the ship literally blew up around him Valiant was beamed off by the Klingon ship Gorkon. The resulting explosion from the Yoritomo and the Borg ship however destroyed every escape pod in the area. A Mirak ship was able to beam survivors from one escape pod off before it was destroyed; it was the escape pod carrying the senior staff of the Yoritomo along with a few other crewmembers.
Because of his feelings that Star Fleet had failed to do its job to protect Star Fleet over the years (Romulan War, and Borg invasion), because he was tired of the pain Star Fleet had caused him, the wars, people dying, him almost dying, him not having a personal life, and him being unable to live with the thought the he had lost his whole crew, except for 9, Valiant went into retirement.
During his retirement, Valiant met a beautiful lady by the name of Natalie Sandres, and fell madly in love with her and the two planned on getting married. However, their plans were put on hold when Valiant received notice that Rear Admiral Benestad wished to speak with him. Meeting with the Admiral, Valiant found out his good friend Captain Luke Johnson was abducted during his first mission, and Star Fleet wanted him to find Johnson. The reasoning behind it was Star Fleet felt his knowledge of his friend would help in the rescue. Valiant, not wanting to go, was given a choice, either return to Star Fleet willingly and receive a promotion to Captain, or be recalled into service by a seldom use reactivation clause and not receive the promotion. Feeling there was no way to get around it, Valiant reluctantly accepted the mission and requested that after this mission Star Fleet would not call upon his service again. To carry out the mission Valiant was given temporary Command of the USS Yeager.
Not wanting to be too far from Valiant, Natalie choose to come with him on what Valiant felt would be his last mission.
During the course of the mission, Valiant discovered the truth behind his friend’s disappearance; Johnson wasn’t abducted, everything was staged. It was discovered that Johnson was one a leader in a resistance group, and he used position to feed this resistance group information, and even attempted to stage a takeover of the Yeager while he was in command.
Falling into a trap set by Johnson (because Johnson felt the Yeager was getting to close to discovering their resistances main headquarters) the Yeager was attacked. During the attack, the Yeager suffered major damage, and Valiant’s fiancé was killed.
Not knowing what to do with his life after Natalie’s death Valiant chose to stay in Star Fleet, as it was all he really had left in his life other than his desire to get revenge on Johnson. Valiant was then given permanent command of the USS Yeager. Valiant was, however, given strict orders not to ever pursue Johnson even if the opportunity arises.
Though under direct orders not to go after Johnson Valiant has been secretly gathering information as to where is Johnson’s whereabouts. Blaming Johnson for Natalie's death Valiant intends on making Johnson pay for taking her away from him.
