1896 – The first speeding fine was given to a British motorist. He was doing 8 mph in a 2 mph zone, and was fined one shilling.
1986 – The space shuttle "Challenger" explodes 73 seconds after liftoff during a live broadcast, resulting in the loss of the spacecraft and her crew.
