1888 – The refracting telescope at the Lick Observatory, measuring 91 cm in diameter, is used for the first time. It was the largest telescope in the world at the time.

1919 – Professor Ernest Rutherford succeeded in splitting the atom.

1999 – The Mars Polar Lander is launched by NASA to study the soil and climate of a region near the south pole on Mars.

2004 – The Mars rover "Spirit" lands on the planet in the Gusev crater. Designed to last only three months, the rover proves to be tough, and the mission is continued for several years.

2019 – "Chang'e 4" makes the first soft landing on the far side of the Moon.
