Personal History

Born at an unknown location, Tek was placed in a Federation orphanage until the age of seven, where he was adopted by Ellana and Johannes Jansen. His birth certificate read “Tiberius Emerad Kiladix,” so the Jansens called him “Tek” for short. He officially had his name changed at the age of nineteen. Once he became a Jansen, he lived in a small town in central Colorado. Being so isolated, he had almost no interactions with beings other than humans. In school, he excelled at the sciences and math, as both of his adoptive parents were experts in their respective fields. Ellana was a doctor and medicinal chemist, while Johannes was an astrophysicist. Needless to say, Tek grew up around chemicals, gadgets, and the leading science in the Federation.

When Tek turned 18, he went to college for Modern Organic Synthetic Chemistry at the Federation University of Science, formally the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His parents had been recruited by the Federation to serve a couple crucial exploration/scientific missions aboard the USS Newton, a newly commissioned Einstein-Class Science Cruiser. About 2 years later, the Second Federation/Romulan War broke out; the Newton was caught off guard and unprotected in an isolated section of space. The Newton was destroyed, and all members aboard were lost. Tek was devastated, but continued his studies in remembrance of his fallen parents. After the Borg invasion, Tek had finally felt that every person available would be needed for the protection of the Federation.

Tek left the FUS after his junior year, and joined Star Fleet. Vowing revenge against the Romulans, he enlisted in the Tactical Command program. He swore that he would find those who murdered the only parents he had ever known, his only family. He excelled in the Star Fleet Academy, specializing himself in weapons operations and inter-vessel naval combat. He also gained exceptional marks in navigation and strategy. In his spare time, he took classes in phaser tactics, hand to hand combat, and basic field medicine. Despite his extensive scientific background, he took a couple elective courses in interplanetary justice. He roomed with a scientist named Phoenix Carter, who Tek took under his wing when it came to the more social aspects of life. Tek and Phoenix became great friends, but were forced to part ways after graduation.

USS Philadelphia, FF-6053

After graduating from the Academy, Tek joined the crew of the USS Philadelphia where he met many influential people there, including Giordano Santiago, who became a quick friend. He bonded greatly with that crew on a trip to the frozen moon of Andor, despite their shuttle being sabotaged, their Captain being thrown in to an Andorian knife fight to the death, and the subsequent decommissioning of the ship soon thereafter.

USS Enterprise, CV-07

Once aboard the Enterprise, he was reunited with his friends Carter and Santiago. Tek quickly acclimated to life on the flagship under Admiral Thrawn and was a constant presence on the Bridge. Within no time, Tek had obtained the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was Chief Tactical Officer of the Flagship. It was beyond prideful, something he wished he could share with family, but he knew that they were proud of the things he had done.

Battle of Starbase 157

Jansen and the rest of the crew of the Enterprise were ambushed at Starbase 157 whilst commanding officers had a meeting about potential war strategy. Under the command of Captain Mike Wong, the Enterprise fought valiantly against the Romulan incursion even during the time displacement, in the end managing to go broadsides with the Romulan Battleship in command and destroying it. Unfortunately in the aftermath, Jansen had blown up a minefield that dealt the final blow to the Romulan flagship, taking an entire hospital ship, the FHS Hope, with it. Even though the Federation had won a great victory at 157, Tek saw it as one of his greatest personal failures.

USS Gettysburg, CA-1863

Soon after the Romulan war, the Enterprise was reassigned to other duties and its crew was transferred to the USS Gettysburg, under Kenneth Fitchel. With a new CO and FO, it was a challenging transition, especially considering the tactical differences between a carrier and a cruiser. Tek spent nearly a year on Gettysburg before being recalled back to Earth.

Un-assigned

Once recalled from the Gettysburg, Tek was brought before various disciplinary committees and Starfleet Tactical Command to be taken to account for Enterprise’s tactical status throughout the Battle of Starbase 157. While it had always been a tactical win, the loss of the Hope with all hands aboard was suddenly too devastating a loss and Jansen was pegged to take the blame for it. After receiving demerits on his file and notation of his testimony, Jansen was re-assigned to a small ship near the Bajoran wormhole, the USS Patton.

USS Patton, DD-0945

Being assigned as the Chief Tactical Officer aboard the Patton, Jansen was once again tasked with figuring out new and interesting ways to compensate as he was assigned to ever smaller ships. Within the first few mission cycles of being on the Patton, they had their first run in with the Krynar. Throughout the unofficial war with the Krynar, Tek fought engagement after engagement, racking up shard kills and earning a reputation for being tight on the stick and heavy with torpedoes. It was ruthless and violent, but it was effective. Tek received numerous accolades for his flying and weapon skill during the Krynar campaign, spending a lot of time cleaning up shard throughout the Beta Quadrant.

Throughout his service on the Patton, Tek was known to also be a bit heavy on the Synthenol, and had participated in multiple fights on starbases and even once in Ten Forward on the Patton herself. Finally, his drinking and new found irritability came to a head when he was goaded by a man in the bar of Spanky McPasternak’s. He decked the man, only to find out he was a Captain on a ship in the 3rd Fleet.

Court-Martial

Jansen was court-martialed and charged with assault on a superior officer. After weeks of defense and witnesses, Tek was ultimately found guilty of the assault. While he normally would have gotten time in a detention facility, the tribunal made the ruling that the fight was provoked and Jansen had no way to know the Captain he struck was of a superior ranking. He was knocked down to the rank of Lieutenant and released to the officer pool for ships. From there, he received a notification to report to Starbase Delta for special assignment to a new ship.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Starship Weaponry, Starship Combat & Three-Dimensional Combat Strategy.
Academy Minor(s): Astronavigation.
Hobbies and Pastimes: Tek enjoys reading, especially current chemical periodicals. He loves the holodeck and the places it takes him, especially when getting immersed in a good holonovel. Tek also greatly enjoys football and rugby, and generally any other contact sport he can find. When not partaking in those, he generally enjoys relaxing to the sounds of classic 20th and 21st century music, mainly Rock and Roll, Swing, and Popular varieties.
Short-Term Goals: Find a starship to prove himself and show Starfleet that he has always been a man of honor, justice and the principles of the organization, no matter what ‘official’ reports say.
Long-Term Goals: Bring his name and career back in to good standing. Work towards putting himself back where he was before the entire universe went to hell. Also, potentially find out more about his birth parents.
Personality: Stern, no-nonsense and a bit cynical. From his prior issues with the organization he believed in so much, he has become more of sarcastic, cynical person when it comes to looking at things. Somewhere deep within himself is his old optimistic, warm personality. However, it is hid under deep scar tissue from what he sees as politics and betrayal.
Sense of Humor: Minimal.
Phobias: Tek is genuinely concerned that he may cause an inter-galactic incident.
Likes: Adventurous holonovels, piloting starships and feeling the movement like it was a part of you, and sitting on the edge of death only to come out on top.
Dislikes: Romulans, Krynar, Superior Officers, Bureaucracy
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Idiots, chewing with your mouth open.
Bad Habits or Vices: Drinking, Fighting, undermining authority. His general attitude is a bad habit.

Prejudices: Doesn’t trust Romulans or Krynar, friend or foe. Always thinks Ferengi are trying to scam him.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Denim pants and T-shirts, with loafer style shoes.
Distinguishing Features: Tattoos on either shoulder blade. Left shoulder blade holds a colored crest of the USS Newton; wrapped in a ribbon that reads “Ellana & Johannes Jansen- 20201.21 Never Forgotten.” Right shoulder blade has the crest of Star Fleet Tactical Command, it too holds a ribbon, within it it holds the names of starships. “USS Philadelphia – FF 6053, USS Enterprise – CV 07, USS Gettysburg CA – 1863, USS Patton DD – 0945”

Friends: Phoenix Carter

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Losing his adoptive parents to a Romulan attack during the second Romulan/Federation war. Never at any one point had he felt so alone and so vulnerable.
Best Time: Re-uniting with his best friend, Phoenix, when he was reassigned to the USS Enterprise.
Most Crucial Experience: The Battle at Starbase 157. This battle set events in motion that led Tek to where he is today. Good or bad, the fight with the Romulans.
