Areack’s father was an engineering officer aboard the USS Bonaparte (Akira Class) during the first general war. His ship was damaged and crashed on a nearby planet. He and the other members of his crew were marooned on the planet for twelve years. While Areack was serving aboard the Copernicus his father was rescued.|
Areack’s mother was the daughter of a high-ranking admiral in the Romulan Imperial Navy. During the months leading up to the first Federation/Romulan war she fled the Romulan Empire and made her way to Earth. She was able to trade the technical knowledge she had of Romulan warships and fleets in exchange for asylum. She settled in San Francisco, and found work as a civilian contractor Romulan Specialist with Starfleet. She soon met a young Starfleet officer by the name of David Jackson. They married and had their only child, Areack, a little over a year later.
Areack was an active and intelligent child. He was withdrawn socially for much of his childhood, mostly because of an occasion when he was betrayed by one of his good friends. He wasn’t able to get over this experience for a long time, and had difficulty trusting others.
Growing up, Areack had several hobbies, and every few months he would get a new one. Several stayed with him over the years, including 18th century earth sailing ship models, engineering, and swords. He has built several model ships, and owns a small collection of blades from various cultures and time periods.
Areack’s father was a skilled Starfleet engineer. He had retired from ship duty when Areack was born and from Starfleet entirely when Areack was nine. He began working for his brother-in-law’s shipping company. Less than one year later the first General War began and Starfleet asked many former Starfleet officers, including David, to re-join. Missing his old job and feeling a sense of patriotism, he accepted. Five months later David’s ship was part of a fleet that was massacred by the Romulans in the Volgo system. When Areack and his mother received news that David was M.I.A. Areack felt great anger towards the nation whose blood he shared. He wanted revenge against the Romulan Empire. This anger greatly influenced him through the years. With great effort and over many years, he put the anger behind him, but still held on to the drive and determination that it had given him.
A combination of his fascination with engineering, his drive to excel, and a sense of respect for his father led Areack to join Starfleet soon after graduating from High School.
Areack served for a year as an enlisted engineer before entering Starfleet Academy. After four years at the Academy, Areack’s graduation was delayed for a few extra weeks. Starfleet Security wanted to run a background check on him in light of the ongoing Romulan War. Although he didn’t like it, Areack cooperated. He was temporarily assigned to the USS Titan on inactive duty pending the investigation. It was during this period that Starfleet was scattered because of the Borg invasion. Once the Borg incursion was turned back, Areack finally heard back from Starfleet Security: he was cleared for duty. This was little more than a rubber stamp on his career, considering that he’d already served aboard the Titan, and been given a field promotion.
Soon afterwards Areack was transferred to the USS Copernicus as part of her maiden crew. Areack spent the majority of his career aboard the Copernicus, serving under 3 commanding officers. He made many friends aboard the Copernicus.
Areack progressed from an Engineering Ensign to the ship’s Chief Engineer. Before being promoted to Chief Engineer, Areack had to pass the Command Officer's Test. He failed the first time because of a tactical mistake in one of the combat simulations, but passed with flying colors on his second attempt. Areack continued to progress in his career, and eventually served as the Copernicus’s First Officer under Captain Elisa Godard. Areack considered this the Golden Age of his career, in many respects he saw the Copernicus as his ship. It was during this Golden Age that Areack received some of the best news of his life: his father, after being stranded for over a decade, had been found alive. During one of his final missions aboard the Copernicus, their mission required Captain Godard to be elsewhere, and she gave Areack command of the ship as Acting CO. This was a pivotal experience for Areack. Although it was stressful, Areack discovered that he enjoyed command, and proved to himself that he was capable of more than just ensuring the integrity of the ship’s systems.
Soon after this experience, Areack was offered a position at Starfleet Engineering Headquarters by an old family friend. The decision to leave ship duty, was hard for Areack, but it represented an opportunity to be on the cutting edge of Starfleet Engineering Technology. After a week of debating, he accepted the position.
For the next two and a half years Areack was stationed at Starfleet Engineering HQ with one of Starfleet’s cutting-edge Research and Development teams. His team was under the command of Commodore James Walther. During this time Areack made two of his best friends, Commander T’vent and Lieutenant Commander Amber Smith.
The last project Areack worked on at Engineering HQ was a classified Starbase/Space Station upgrade. To oversee the trial run of the system, and because he wanted to return to Space Duty, Areack was transferred to the SS-18 Sierra stationed near the Cardassian Border.
