Personal History

Early Childhood through High school

Jack Ristone is the oldest of two sons born to Robert and Lindsay Ristone on Earth. Robert Ristone served in the civilian police force and Lindsay served as a doctor in a local non-Star Fleet hospital.

Jack had a very normal childhood. He and his brother, who are two years apart in age, became best friends at a young age. The two spent hours upon hours together running around the city their parents’ worked in as well as the country where their family owned some land.

Jack always loved to tinker with objects. He loved taking things apart and seeing how they worked. For a long time his parents believed he had a knack for machines and would make a great engineer. Jack’s passion however was not for machines but rather for seeing how/why something worked and how to keep it in that working order.

Early in Jack’s high school career he became very interested in his mother’s work at the hospital. He realized that his mother, and the other doctors in the hospital, did exactly what he loved to do … figuring out why something worked, then attempting to keep it that way for as long as possible.

Jack quickly became passionate about the medical field. During summers he spent hours at the hospital talking with nurses, doctors, and anyone else who would talk to him about medicine and the wonders it held. Jack truly felt that medicine was the greatest science of them all and knew that he wanted to devote his life to its study.

After his sophomore year of High School Lindsay Ristone got Jack a job at a local Veterinary clinic doing clerical and manual labor. At the clinic Jack was able to watch and learn from the local vet and although Jack knew his desire was not animal medicine he quickly began to enjoy the work greatly and it only grew his desire to enter the medical field one day.

While Jack was falling in love with his mother’s line of work his brother Nick, who he was still extremely close with, was falling in love with their father’s line of work – law enforcement.

By the time Jack graduated high school he had a game plan in place to help him become the doctor he desired to be.

College - Star Fleet Academy

Jack was accepted into Oklahoma University where he earned his pre-med degree in only two years thanks to years of hanging out in the hospital, reading anything he could get his hands on, and having over a dozen doctors ready to tutor him at any given moment.

While deciding where to go to Medical School Jack was approached by a Star Fleet recruiter who spoke about the wonders of medicine in Star Fleet. At first Jack was unmoved though in time this would change.

For the time being however Jack continued his civilian education by attending Medical School at Vanderbilt in Tennessee. Jack enjoyed the smaller class sizes at Vanderbilt where he felt he was getting the best possible medical education. During his third year of med-school Jack decided to specialize in pediatrics and especially pediatric surgery. Jack eventually started and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Towards the end of his residency Jack was once again approached by a Star Fleet recruiter. This time the recruiter had a new pitch ... The Federation was soon to be at war and medical staff would be drastically needed. Not only was Jack's patriotism peaked but so was his curiosity and he soon discovered that Star Fleet did indeed take medicine to the next level than anything he would do on earth in a civilian hospital. To Jack, medicine was the greatest form of science and serving in Star Fleet would allow him to expand his knowledge about medicine to span countless species in addition to humans.

Although not overly fond of adding additional years to his education Jack decided to make the best of the situation by specializing in Emergency Medicine. Due to the breakout of war with the Romulans and Jack's already established MD, he was able to graduate the Academy in 2 years rather than four.

Jack talked his brother Nick, who had just graduated college, into joining Star Fleet at the same time. Although the two brothers went into different fields (Jack medicine and Nick security) the two were able to spend a lot of time together in San Francisco.

Thanks to his schooling before entering the Academy Jack was able to cover more degrees during his time at the Academy. He graduated very high in his class with majors in emergency medicine and trauma surgery and minors in anatomy and xenobiology.

Star Fleet Career

Upon graduation from the Academy Jack was assigned to the USS Valley Forge as a medical midshipman. Jack quickly proved to be a very skilled doctor and was promoted to Ensign very early in his career.

For the first time in his life Jack was separated from his brother Nick and was forced to make new friend. This did not occur at first. Instead, Jack spent much of his time working, furthering his knowledge, or spending time alone in his quarters. Eventually Jack did begin to make friends, though several of them proved to be a bad influence on the up-to-this-point sheltered and focused doctor.

Jack quickly found himself expressing the rebellion he had squelched as a very focused teenager. This rebellion never caused significant damage to his career however it caused him to remain at the rank of ensign for far longer than those he graduated with at the Academy.

Change of Plans

Jack quickly discovered he loved Star Fleet and even when times got tough, such as the borg war, Jack never regretted his decision to pursue a career in Star Fleet.

Jack was however forced to reevaluate things when his father unexpectantly died in a hover car accident. Both Nick and Jack took brief LOA’s to bury their father and comfort their mother. After a month of leave Nick, who had already risen to Chief of Security on the USS Sheridan, was required to return to his ship.

Jack, who was still an ensign, managed to receive a change of assignment to Star Fleet Medical Headquarters on Earth in Boston to receive further training and schooling. This allowed Jack to live on Earth with his grieving mother.

Jack’s time on Earth proved to be the best thing for him. Not only did he grow in wisdom and knowledge and look after his mother but he also was able to distance himself from his friends on the Valley Forge who had been bad influences on his life.

Several years after returning to Earth to study and work Jack returned to the stars with a reminder of the passion he had for medicine.

USS Avenger

Jack was assigned to the Avenger’s medical department and once again quickly proved to be an asset to the department and ship. During his time on the Avenger Jack was promoted to Lieutenant [JG].

Mission 1: Justice

Jack was serving on the USS Avenger when it was thrown into an alternate universe in which many of the crew of the Avenger already existed. The copy of Jack however was killed years before in the Borg War.

Jack's first experience in this dimension was being mentally manipulated and controlled by a captured Krynar. The experience was very traumatic for Jack and required him to see a trauma therapist while on Star Base Delta. Although he will not admit it (mostly because he does not want to visit the therapist any longer) he often experiences waves of emotions that leave him sympathetic to the Krynar.

Shoreleave

Once the Avenger made it to Star Base Delta Jack was required to meet with multiple Star Fleet Officers. Like other medical officers from the Avenger he had to pass several tests to ensure that he had the proper medical knowledge to practice medicine in 'this dimension'. Jack of course passed all of the tests extremely easily.

While on leave Jack mostly spent time alone simply relaxing and catching up on rest and relaxation he had not experienced in years.

Mission 2: Secrets of the Gamma Quadrant

After shoreleave the USS Avenger departed Star Base Delta and began heading towards the wormhole that led to the Gamma Quadrant. Their mission was rather straight forward - obtain Ketracel White at all costs. In an effort to be successful the command staff decided to pursue two different methods of obtaining the substance.

The Avenger itself would make contact with a dominion vessel or station and negotiate for the substance. The James Madison however would enter stealth mode and journey to a small K-W manufacturing base where they would simply take the substance if negotiations proved unsuccessful.

Jack, as the sole medical officer, was assigned to the James Madison. During the travel to the base Jack was able to work on some research however that quickly ended once they made it to their destination.

While waiting near the station several members of the Avenger crew became infected with a deadly virus that mutated the infected into an 'un-dead' like status which removed their ability to control emotions or impulses. All who reached a critical fever point of the virus were lost including one crewmember Jack killed to prevent further injury or spread of the virus.

Eventually the James Madison was given a green-light to storm the facility. Jack of course remained on the vessel were he continued to treat those infected by the virus as well as Commander Crawford (the JM's Commanding Officer) who had nearly died due to a severe allergic reaction.

In the long run several crewmembers died due to the virus, others died due to a shower malfunction, and a few died on the station during the siege. They were however successful in retrieving a large supply of already made K-W as well as many raw ingredients which would hopefully eventually allow Jack to create the substance himself.

The James Madison eventually returned to the Avenger and while enroute back to Delta Jack was promoted to Lieutenant and awarded the Gold Star

Shoreleave

Back on Delta Jack spent his days working in one of the massive sickbay labs. Jack loved doing research and found it very relaxing and a pace change to the 'patch' work he generally did while the ship was on mission. Jack was able to make significant headway into creating Ketracel White which would eliminate them needing to return to the Gamma Quadrant in the future.

Mission 3: Marooned

After shoreleave the USS Avenger was assigned to patrol the Tholian border. Jack, like many of the crew, believed this to be a waste of their knowledge and skill against the Krynar but the junior officer doctor did not complain too much. It did after all give him plenty of time to continue his research into synthesizing Ketracel White. While continuing his research Jack met a new science officer named Rollins. Rollins was a large Orion man who, in Jack's opinion, was as innocent and pure as a child.

A short time into their patrol the Avenger picked up a distress message from a very old Federation probe. The James Madison was prepped and a rather large team was sent to retrieve the probe.

Jack, who had proven to be a great asset to the small James Madison was assigned to the away team. Much to his annoyance the new Chief Medical Officer, Ohmsford, was also assigned to the James Madison.

The three day journey to Halless I passed extremely slowly due to the cramped space on the Madison. Jack passed much of the time by training Katie Grant in basic first aid. The teenage daughter of the Captain appeared to possess a rather passionate desire to learn medical procedures.

Jack, who also slept in the medical bay on the Madison, was with a patient when the James Madison began to crash on Halless I. The crash occurred without warning and thus no body had proper time to prepare themselves for the thrashing that took place. Jack sustained several injuries and lacerations and his patient suffered from a broken neck.

Jack spent his time marooned on Halless I attempting to treat the Madison crewmembers despite their limited resources. Something on the planet prevented any of their technology from working and thus Jack was most left with splints and hyposprays to treat the injured. Thankfully Ohmsford survived and was able to help treat the injured.

Sadly Jack's new friend Rollins was killed on the planet by a flying creature.

The away team eventually made contact with some natives, though it was done in a less-than-positive manner. In an effort to save Crawford's life from the natives Jack injected the creature with a very large dosage of sedatives which eventually took effect.

Not long after that the USS Avenger managed to transport the away team back to the vessel and destroy traces of the Madison's existence from the planet's surface. Jack hated to see the small ship destroyed.

Recall to Sector 001

Instead of being granted a shoreleave the Avenger was redirected to Sector 001 where the Krynar were invading. The Avenger was in rough shape due to a skirmish with the Tholians (which occurred while attempting to rescue the Marooned James Madison crew) but was working overtime to ensure they would be battle ready when they arrived. During that time Grant was removed from the Avenger and Crawford was named the Acting Commanding Officer.

When they arrived to Sector 001 they learned that they would be joining an task force of other Star Fleet vessels in a battle to reclaim Tellar and Tellarite Space.

Retaking Tellar

For the majority of the operation Jack remained in sickbay and treated the incoming injured crewmembers. Jack successfully competed several surgeries and other minor treatments during the space skirmish.

During the battle the Krynar transported orbs onto the Avenger. The orbs caused mental manipulation and enlightenment and sickbay was one of the many places ship-wide that the orbs were transported to. Chaos ensued in sickbay which included a crewmember taking their own life as well as taking the life of someone else. Thankfully a security team disabled (ie: blew up) the orb and the mental manipulation halted.

This experience caused Jack to research a method to block out Krynar manipulation which he eventually discovered. Jack modified neural stimulators to counteract the telepathic frequency the Krynar used. The devices were not perfect but they were enough to keep people in their correct frame of mind when confronted with Krynar manipulation.

As the mission progressed Jack was sent to Tellar Prime with a squad of security and marines. Jack was assigned to the Marine team as a field medic/surgeon Their mission was to take over the local police headquarters which they accomplished without any casualties.

Shoreleave on Alpha

After the mission ended the Avenger (as well as many other vessels) returned to Star Base Alpha for shoreleave. During the shoreleave two important things happened.

First, Bajor mysteriously returned (although there was still evidence of its destruction)

Second, Jack finished his two year research project into creating Ketracel White. This was a major accomplishment in Jack’s career and he was awarded the Leonard McCoy Living Saving Cross for the accomplishment.

Resigning from Star Fleet

Jack eventually found himself somewhat fitting in to life in Star Fleet. He still missed his home universe immensely but he was at least finding satisfaction in his work.

However, that all changed when members of the Avenger-Universe (led by Ethan Grant and Ryan Cooper) hijacked the Avenger in an attempt to return to their own Universe. Jack was not a part of the hijacking plot and in fact, he was a part of the USS Apparition crew assigned to retake the Avenger.

Despite this fact, Jack was treated like a suspect. It was bad enough to be viewed suspiciously from the security staff on the ship, but even worse when Tyra questioned his loyalty and refused to allow him to be on the away team to retake the Avenger.

It was then that Jack realized that he would never properly fit in with the Star Fleet crew. After returning to Star Base Delta, Jack took a leave of absence and then resigned his Star Fleet Commission.

Civilian Life

For the next year, Jack traveled to various planets and worked in various hospitals and other medical facilities. Often, he found himself in run-down and impoverished planets either unallied with (or forgotten by) the Federation.

Rejoining Star Fleet

After his year long sabbatical Jack decided to return to Star Fleet. Although he felt that he had done some good during his year away, he also realized he could do more good with the resources that Star Fleet provided.

Jack was required to be recertified by the Academy, which he quickly did.

USS Reciprocity

Immediately after being recertified by Star Fleet Academy, Jack was approached by a Vulcan named Solek and was offered a position on a vessel named Reciprocity. Jack was intrigued by the opportunity and saw it as a way of doing the most good, especially given his recent return and rank reduction in Star Fleet.

What Jack did not fully understand at the time was the true covert status of Reciprocity. Over the next month or two Jack was put through rigorous testing and training which even included running a simulation that both Jack and the rest of the crew thought was real. This simulation, during which Jack was forced to euthanize a holographic (though he did not know it at the time) member of the crew impacted him greatly.

In the time that followed the holographic training, Jack was promoted twice and was named the Chief Medical Officer of the small ship. He also underwent cross training in various fields. Perhaps most importantly, he started a relationship with the First Officer, Wren Gaglardi.

Eventually, the USS Reciprocity did embark on a real mission. The ship was sent to capture or kill Derrick Grant (prime) for his crimes against the Federation. As a Medical Officer, this mission did not directly involve Jack or his fellow doctor colleague, Martin Fields. The two did provide assessments and helped to provide input for the mission, which was taking them to the Pluto moon, Charon.

For most of the mission Jack was performing surgery on Chief Petty Officer Skall Kyber who suffered a brain injury. That was, at least, until the ship was forcefully evacuated due to a supposed core breach. Before being beamed off the ship, Jack was called to Al McKinney, the COs, quarters for a medical emergency. When Jack arrived he discovered that Al (who was part man and part machine) had been killed.

Jack, however, was unable to share that information, for he was shot unconscious by accidental friendly fire mere moments after arriving on Charon. He briefly woke up in a makeshift medical room, but was pretty out of it. Eventually a nearby vessel rescued the Reciprocity crew (the Reciprocity being removed by a man named Buck Steele in either an act of bravery or thievery) and delivered them to a nearby Star Base.

USS Beckett, CX-2000

Jack spent a few days on Star Base Alpha before jetting to Star Base Bravo for a few days. While on Bravo, Jack learned that he had been assigned to the Medical Department on a new class of ship named the USS Beckett.

While a part of Jack was excited for an opportunity to serve on a large vessel with a large medical facility, this excitement was greatly curbed when he learned that he would only be serving as a standard doctor and not as the ship’s Chief Medical Officer.

This disappointment was perhaps magnified due to the rocky status of his relationship with Wren. After the conclusion of the Reciprocity mission he had discovered that she had been on assignment from Star Fleet Intelligence and he therefore felt betrayed.

In any event, Jack pressed on, holding onto the hope that he would be able to serve as a doctor and make a difference in the Universe he now called home. On the day the Beckett was launched, Jack was promoted to full Lieutenant (the rank he held before his year long sabbatical) and was awarded the Distinguished Service Globe. Both of these honors were given to him by his brother, Nicholas Ristone, the 2nd Fleet Commander. The gold pip, in fact, had been Nick’s own.
