The J'naii are an androgynous species within Federation territory native to the planet J'naii.
History
In an earlier stage of their evolution, the J'naii species had two sexes. The current J'naii race had evolved physically into a sexless androgynous race.
In 2368, the J'naii contacted the nearby USS Enterprise-D to investigate the disappearance of a J'naii shuttle in their star system. The crew of the shuttle was subsequently rescued from a pocket of null space. The pocket was thoroughly mapped by the shuttlecraft, with help from the Enterprise. The Enterprise crew discussed plans to regulate space travel around the pocket, and decided on deploying warning buoys around the null space pocket.
Biology
J'naii are noticeably smaller than Humans, and have a different anatomy all together. The average lifespan for a J'naii is 150 years, but many of this species are known to surpass that average.
When referring to themselves, J'naii use a gender-neutral pronoun, which is difficult to translate using the Universal Translator. As the people's evolution has passed the stage of two physical sexes, the entire notion of "gender" is now considered "offensive" to the J'naii. J'naii are taught that "gender" is a primitive aspect of less-evolved lifeforms. Consequently, it is hard for the J'naii to grasp the subtleties of differences and complex customs between sexes in other species. Although J'naii are possibly sexually compatible with other, gendered races, they are never allowed to mate by assuming a gender role in the act. This is considered criminally perverse in J'naii society, and is strictly a taboo subject.
J'naii mating and reproduction is a long ritual, full of variety and invention, and is said by its people to be extremely pleasurable. In the last stage of mating, a fibrous husk is inseminated by the two parents. The fetus then incubates inside the husk for an indeterminate amount of time. This is considered a less risky, and less painful method of reproduction, compared to other species of which the J'naii had knowledge.
Culture
The J'naii people are said to be strong-minded, and have plenty of social conflicts between individuals. J'naii use no form of make-up, and do not keep their hair long or arrange it elaborately. In the J'naii language, there is a personal pronoun that is gender neutral, for which there is no translation in the English language.
Although J'naii do appear to have family units, and engage in recreational activities, the concept of gender is considered abhorrent in their society. Any J'naii who feel a tendency toward an identifiably masculine or feminine personality is thought to be "perverted" or otherwise mentally ill. Such individuals are shunned to the point of facing criminal charges if they overtly identify themselves according to gender. Any J'naii who is found guilty of such behavior is often subjected to intensive "treatment" for a "cure." This treatment can consist of psychotectic therapy, an intense re-writing of neural pathways to obliterate the gender tendencies.
The planet J'naii is ruled from the civic chamber inside the civic center. There is a head of government, as well as a head of a judge's panel, in order to deal with legal matters of the J'naii people. J'naii consider themselves a free and open society, and by all measurements, an enlightened race. The rights and liberties the citizens enjoy give them a great deal of self-determination. In dealing with sickness, the government considers itself obligated to cure the sickness seriously.
The government has a total lack of acceptance for gender identities. Any individual suspected of leaning towards one gender identity can be taken into police custody. A trial is then held for the individual, in order to confirm or dispute these charges. When a person is found to be a deviant, psychotectic therapy is used to change their gender identity to the "proper" androgyny. A person would only be re-accepted into society if they accepted this procedure.
Sub-Culture
Occasionally, individuals are born with urges for "maleness" or "femaleness" instead of the J'naii-typical androgyny. A remnant from their earlier evolutionary stages, these urges are considered a form of mental sickness. This "sickness" resulted in a subculture forming inside J'naii society, where the gender-oriented individuals lived as a lie. They pretend to have androgynous gender identities, and seek each other out in secret, and express themselves using bi-gender roles. This minority lives in constant fear of being discovered.
Technology
During the 24th century, J'naii operated at least several shuttlecraft, though they were incapable of venturing beyond their star system. J'naii had knowledge of warp drive technology, as well as several alien races.
In 2368, one J'naii shuttle pilot was already familiar with all the technology of a Starfleet Type 6 shuttlecraft before having seen one in person.
