The Iotians are humanoids that are externally identical to Humans, but internally have biologic differences.
Native to the planet planet Sigma Iotia II in the Beta Quadrant, Iotians are highly intelligent and somewhat imitative.
Biology
Iotians are noted for being highly intelligent, and posses an ability to learn at a faster rate than other humanoids.
Their natural abilities for mimicry make it easy for this species to pick up other languages. Federation scientists have theorized that Iotian brain-eye stems process information quicker than that of a Human.
Culture
Due to the contamination, Iotian culture strongly resembled that of a mob structure in Earth's 1920s. The world was split up into territories, and citizens of these territories paid a percentage of their wages in return for protection from violence. Aggression between the territories was common. Technology was limited to ground-based vehicles, primitive firearms, a rudimentary postal system, and unrefined alcohol. The world's "Bible" was the novel on Chicago mobs that had been left behind, referring to it simply as "the Book."
Iotian names tended to consist of two parts, the last one which might be used as shorthand.
Though they knew they had been visited by extraterrestrials as early as the mid-22nd century, the Iotian leadership appeared to have no concept of their place in the wider galaxy.
Known History
- 2167: The USS Horizon visits Sigma Iotia II for a survey mission. A crew member accidently leaves behind a number of items, including a book entitled "Chicago Mobs of the Twenties", breaking the Prime Directive. The Iotians find the book, and cultural contamination begins, as the imitative species reinvent their entire society, thinking "Chicago Mobs" was the perfect societal model.
- The event became known as the "Iotian catastrophe" and Starfleet Academy warned its students not to leave anything behind on less developed worlds.
- 2268: The USS Enterprise visits the star system for a second time in Federation history, discovering the extent of the cultural contamination. They are able to create a loose system of government on the planet, with ties to the Federation acting as an authority figure. Yearly visits were put into place in order to ensure the correction of the contamination, and put the Iotians back on track. One member of the Enterprise accidently leaves their communicator on the planet.
- Post-2268: Reverse-engineering the forgotten communicator, the Iotians learn transtator-based Federation technology. Using their natural ability for mimicry, Iotians were able to build a Federation-like starbase in their planet's orbit.
- 24th Century: Sigma Iotia II becomes a Federation protectorate. Though it is not a quarantined planet, all personnel are required to obtain clearance through an orbital customs facility before visiting the surface.
