Mission Summary

Stardate 21611.15

Prelude

In the Gamma Quadrant there is a distress call from the planet known as Sorrel IV. This planet is new and has never been contacted before as the Gamma Quadrant is still being explored. A distress signal is received and it is decided that the crew will beam down to help out a people that are clearly in peril.

Captain Gabriel Archer Captain’s log.

We have responded to a distress signal while on our way to a diplomatic mission in the Bajoran sector. I have sent an away team planet side to deal with the situation. However, with our sensors down due to flares, an unknown ship blasted its way into the Intrepid's shuttlebay. Battle still rage between the hostile intruders and the crew. We are blind without our sensors, and our communication system is down. At the recommendation of the marines I brought us to General Quarters Four. In the meantime, I am hoping that our scientists will find a way to give us an advantage over this mysterious foe. Until then, we fight on.

Captain's log, They ran away. It seems that as soon as we figured out a way to kill them, the Reapers, tucked tail and ran like the true cowards they are. We picked up all the survivors from the planed and set course to the Jefferson rendezvous point before the local star went nova. However, when we arrived, we found her limping in space. We learned that she was ambushed after responding to a distress call, and had sustained damage as well as the loss of 9 crew members. The fate of the ambassador and his attaches remains unknown.

We were told that Ambassador T'Loko did not discuss what happened during his diplomatic mission, so the outcome remains a mystery as well. It is possible that the attack on the Jefferson was connected to this outcome, but there is no way to confirm it at this point. With our main concern is the well being and safety of the refugees we picked up, we picked the wounded escort ship and set course back to Star Base.Alpha.

Among the losses in this mission, was my first officer and dear friend Commander Dietrich Kaiser. In a way, he went out as a hero and died exactly how he always wanted to go; in the line of duty. As a final act, I will recommending that he is awarded the purple heart medal. While his loss had affected me on a personal level, I will grieve his loss in private while I maintain a professional outlook and remain strong for the crew and their families. That said, Kaiser had been a part of this command team for years, and the Intrepid will never be the same without him.

We will be holding a memorial shortly, to honor our dearly departed. For now, it is time to for us go home, recharge and prepare for our next adventure. After all, such is the life of the fleeter.

First Officer's Log Commander Kaiser recording.

While traveling in the Gamma Quadrant en route to a diplomatic conference, we have intercepted a distress signal from a world with which first contact has not yet been established. We're sending the Ambassador on to his meeting in the Jefferson while the Intrepid will head on to the planet to investigate the source of the disturbance.

Lt(JG) Dresden McNair

We've received a distress signal from the planet Sorrel IV in the Gamma Quadrant. The Intrepid is moving to investigate and we've sent Ambassador T'Loko ahead on the Jefferson. I've placed Ensign Alari in charge of his security until we meet back up with them. I've sent Rahimi, Aux, and Joran along with her as support. Security Protocol states at least four officers when not aboard the ship, but I hope she's taken the suggestion of bringing along two more. Rahimi is technically the senior officer for this, but Alari has shown to be reliable with a good head on her shoulders. This will be good practice for her. On top of that, we've gotten a new ensign in our department, Ensign MacClare. I've briefly read over her file and she has proven herself to be an asset on the Sheridan and I am confident she will continue to be an asset here.

Ens Elaina MacClare Security Officer's Log:

My short time aboard the Intrepid has been eventful. Every thing went dark aboard the ship, the turbo lifts stopped working, and I have heard bits and pieces of some hullabaloo with the replicators on the bridge. Apparently a solar flare is to blame for the problems the ship is having. I get the impression there may be something wrong with the main comm system, though the comm badges still are functional. I attempted to contact the bridge to find out what had happened. I received no answer. More troubling, apparently we are unable to contact the away team. I hope they are not in trouble. If they are, we can't help them. I will update this log as more information becomes available.

Chief Tactical Officer's Log LCdr Elizabeth Rage Reporting

I have come to the conclusion that we can never have just a 'normal' mission. I haven't experienced anything like this before, as a solar flare caused a serious malfunction with the replicators. The bridge and everyone there was completely covered with...breakfast. Needless to say, I never wants eggs or orange juice ever again. During this time we lost sensors and communications with the Away Team. Commander Caldecott and his team are working to fix the problem, hopefully soon. I worry, things like this always seem to happen at the worst possible time.

Ensign Harley Ann Cutler {Rage} Security Officer's Log

Sometimes I wonder if I should have stayed where I was and not have transferred, yet I look around at these people I am fighting along side with and have grown somewhat close too in the last few weeks and that feeling slowly starts to fade away...well, until someone else pisses me off, and then it's back. This mission has been a horrific one, and I don't expect it to get any better. I am about to go out with the marines and a few natives of this planet to try and rescue Commander Kaiser and a little girl. Hopefully we make it in time, as I can only imagine what these vile creatures will do to them. I myself don't care one way or another how it's done, just as long as we get it done.

Science Officer's Log Ensign Martin W. Fields Reporting

Well, I'm about to start my first shift of bridge duty on the Intrepid. I haven't actually seen much of the ship yet, but I know what Avenger-class ships looks like. It might be strange to see different people in familiar places, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I sort of have to, to be frank. I haven't really met anyone yet either, but hopefully I'll be here a while. I'm told that Jadaris, the Chief Science Officer, is a Gorn. I haven't really interacted with many Gorn, but if nothing else, it should prove an interesting new cultural experience...

I'm not entirely sure why I came back to Starfleet, and maybe I shouldn't have, but there's no backing out now. We're in the Gamma Quadrant, and it's been rather uneventful so far. That's a good thing, I think. Part of me wants a "boring" mission, but, I'm sure I'll be left wanting. This is a Starfleet ship, after all, not a retirement cruise. You'd think I would've figured that much out after my first tour. Romulan plagues and Klingon intelligence bases... I have the odd feeling the excitement has only begun.

I should get up to the Bridge... at my age, they may think I've died in bed...

Autopsy Notes Ensign Martin Fields reporting

This is a rather peculiar specimen, almost gorilla or ape-like in appearance. Initial scans show very little, which is intriguing, and frustrating. At the suggestions of Captain Archer and Commander Jadaris I am collecting skin and bone samples from this specimen, which will hopefully allow me to construct a profile of this species so that we can actually track and kill them. After removing parts of the skin, or rather, hide, I've noticed that the bone is... I almost said discolored... but it doesn't seem to be modified or stained. It's just the "wrong" color. It may be the light in here, but I'll take the sample anyway.

My current theory - and this is pure speculation - is that these creatures may be genetically engineered, and/or some degree of synthetic in origin. I might be dead wrong, but from what I've gathered, a good deal of our crew is now just plain dead, so as far as I'm concerned, any theory is better than none.

I'll continue these notes as I finish tests and start building a profile.

Lt Michelle Price Personal Log

I... I honestly don't know what to report. The creatures-- known by locals as Reapers of all names- are merciless and vile. They seem to kill for consumption or... pleasure . Maybe both. From the people I've seen, their attacks are intended to be fatal or extremely painful and terrorizing. Deep, thick lacerations plague most of the afflicted and countless are found... dismembered. By my assessment, the Reapers are polyphagic; they have insatiable and unquenchable hunger for flesh. They're intelligent, space faring lifeforms but are anything but civilized. They are barbarians; murderers; beasts with the mission to consume worlds without any sort of exclusion. Countless lives have been lost and continue to be lost.... An attempt by one of them was made at destroying the Sorrelians "safe-haven" via some sort of explosive. Fortunately,Commander Jackson figured a way to transport it out of harms way but not without causing a frenzied stampede. Moral is low, I'm out-manned and under-supplied and damn near exhausted.

The mission feels like a failure... I feel like a failure...I've failed the locals, my team... my first officer.

Damn it Kaiser....

[An audible shuffle and thump is heard]

Damn it, that hurt... Damn cots...

Need to help with transporting patients. Hopefully we'll be able to take the remaining Sorrellians off this beautifully horrific rock, onto the Intrepid and far away from this mess.

Autopsy Notes, Continued Dr. Martin W. Fields (Ensign) reporting

This... creature just gets weirder and weirder. I think it goes without saying that this is unlike anything I've ever seen before. The discoloration of the bone was likely due to its mineral composition. I managed to collect a sample and get a preliminary reading.The bones are laced with Kelbonite, a mineral notorious for interfering with our scanning and transporter technologies. That certainly explains why we couldn't track these things... The skin samples are also interesting. I managed to get enough to run a test, and found that our phasers can - on high-energy and wide-beam settings - vaporize the skin, though it leaves behind some sort of gaseous discharge. I'm running another round of tests, to see if I can learn more about the gas, and more about the non-kelbonite minerals in the bone. I've modified the scanning frequency of a tricorder to compensate so with any luck, that may yield some results. Strange... I just realized I haven't heard back from Jadaris... after these tests, I'll check back in.

Ensign Harley Ann Cutler {Rage} Security Officer's Log

It's been a week since we have returned to the ship. I haven't had much sleep since, all I can think about is the blood, the smell, the red...it won't go away. Maybe I'm finally going insane? I never wanted any of this, I never wanted to relive those memories, yet here I am, dealing with them once again. Mostly everyone on this ship was close to Kaiser, I on the other hand didn't know the man that well. Though I didn't want him to die. I didn't want to walk in there and see his arm in the fire, the mans skull crushed into a pile of blood and matter. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. We should have gotten there sooner, should have saved him. Now this crew is dealing with a heartache of losing their First Officer yet again! I heard the stories, and I don't doubt some of them are waiting for his return. His somehow miraculous return from the dead. Fools, you can only cheat death so many times before it finally wraps it's claws around you.

Now that shore leave has come around, I'm hoping to return home and see my family and friends. Hopefully things there are in better spirits than things here. Lord knows I need it.

Ens Martin Fields Personal Log,

It's finally done! Of course it would take me the most time to finish the dedications page of all things, but it's done. It's almost hard to believe it's actually finished. I'm sure Isaac will have something to say about the finished product, but I don't much care at this point. If he wants it changed he can do it himself! You'd think he'd have his own damn book to write, but apparently he published 5 at that's the limit... Maybe I rushed writing the damn thing but I just want it to be over. I don't quite fit in with the other Daystrom academics anymore, and I'm starting to think that it's time to put that part of my life behind me.

I can't say it was easy to revisit the house in Maine, especially after my first mission on the Intrepid, but there was something rather comforting about it. Even with everyone gone, it's still there, waiting. Someone mentioned trying to sell it, but I don't think I could go through with it. Besides, who would want a gigantic, empty house in Augusta, Maine? It's a lovely house, but it's a little... dated. Most of the walls are glass, and the color scheme went out of style about 15 years ago. Maybe after this next mission I'll recruit some people to help me clean it out. Heaven knows it needs it. Now that I can really make it mine, I can pull quite a bit out of storage. I can't imagine my mother enjoying her home filled to the brim with Klingon decor, but it's out of her hands now.

I think I've adjusted rather well to life in Starfleet, though I'm not as green as everyone seems to think. Having Commander Caldecott onboard will help. He saw what I'm capable of back on the Dauntless, and hopefully I won't be a junior officer for long. That may be easier said than done, though. The officer on this ship are some of the finest young people I've met, and I may be kidding myself if I think I can keep up.

I've said for than enough for now. I need to get back to my lab and dissect the reaper on my table. But first, I think I'll stop off on Starbase Alpha. I need a drink.

LCdr Jadaris CSO's Log

After a long, grueling, mission, we've returned home. But I don't feel like we've won. We lost Kaiser and the ambassador, as well as countless others. I almost lost my life against the Reapers, but the number of engineers I protected made the sacrifice worth it. They say missions like this test your resolve, which is why I'm writing this log from a medical bay on Cestus III. I'm watching my arm being regrown utilizing Gorn medical technology, and looking forward to getting rid of this inorganic arm. One day maybe I'll find some peace from what I saw, but that may be never. Perhaps our next mission won't be quite as damaging as the last one.

Commander Nathan Storm First Officer's Personal Log;

The adjustment for both myself and the crew has been difficult as I move into my role as First Officer of the Intrepid. More than once I've thought I've seen a familiar face in the corridors or come home to my quarters looking for Lucy or the kids.

[Pause]

I wish I knew what happened to the Merrimack. All I see are images in my dreams once in awhile. Nothing concrete or definitive. Screaming, yelling, panic. The ship was definitely being hit by something. I'd know that feeling in the deck anywhere. But if we were attacked by a hostile force, why would they let an escape pod go? And why would I be the only escape pod to make it? And why would I have entered an escape pod without my family?

[Long Pause]

I...I miss them...I have to go back... End Log.

Commander Nathan Storm First Officer's Personal Log;

An accidental warp drive malfunction while testing new engines has propelled us out of the Milky Way Galaxy and into the vast emptiness between galaxies. We have been attacked by scavengers who, while repelled, have managed to leave behind some sort of explosive. Fortunately our weapons were not match for them sending them on the retreat almost as soon as we put up a resistance. Unfortunately they managed to take one of our warp nacelles off before we could stop them.

I don't know how we are going to get back to the Alpha Quadrant. At full impulse it will take 200,000 years to make the trip.

Stardate 21711.29

Commander Nathan Storm First Officer's Log;

We were able to get Intrepid back to Earth having discovered the temporary wormhole that got us stuck in the first place. We lost a few people when we were boarded and from a bomb set by the intruders. First day on the job and the Chief of Security and Chief Tactical Officer are wounded. We're not sure of the COS will make it. And at least two security officers dead. All we can do is pray that Commander Korl pulls through. I hold myself personally responsible. I haven't felt myself since losing...my family...and I let it effect my judgement. Maybe I'm not cut out for this job. The Captain is waiting for me to debrief him and I'm pretty sure I'll be out of a job by the end of the conversation.
