Inertial guidance system

An inertial guidance system is a comprised of a series of accelerometers and sensors that work together to create a detailed index of the spatial position of a starship.
Despite advances in technology, inertial guidance systems can suffer from small errors in measurement if the accelerometers that make up the system are not recalibrated at least once a month. If the problem is not corrected, it can result in progressively larger errors in velocity and position. This is a large problem, as ships could then end up running into spatial bodies or other ships.
