Personal History

The product of post-war festivities following the First General War, Cornelius Aleksander “Niels” Hoekstra was born in Seattle, Washington on a typical fall day. His mother, Rozemarijn Hoekstra, was the sole proprietor of her family's diner, Rosie's. Niels knows very little about his father beyond the fact that he was a Star Fleet officer his mother met at a party.

Though Niels came first, Rosie's was always a close second in the Hoekstra household. Her dream of running the diner left Rozemarijn with little time for other activities. Not willing to compromise, she opted to care for Neils in the diner while she worked. With no relatives besides his mother, Niels soon came to view the staff and regulars of Rosie's as his family.

Some of the regulars were scientists from the nearby Star Fleet Science Institute. They came to Rosie's every Friday afternoon. Over a carafe of strong coffee they would exchange ideas from their varied fields of study. The group, clad in their crisp Star Fleet uniforms, enthralled Niels. When he was old enough, he would stand on his tiptoes and peer at them over the counter. Eventually, they would notice him and ask him a question about their topic of discussion. His naïve responses elicited howls of laughter from the group. Yet, they would always use it as an opportunity to teach him something new.

About a month after his sixth birthday, the Borg attacked. For the next six months, the constant threat of attack loomed overhead. Niels had recurring nightmares of the Borg assimilating him. Seeing his distress, Dr. Zarv, one of the scientists, talked to Niels about his fears. He promised the young boy that Star Fleet was working very hard to keep him safe.

When the joint fleet defeated the Borg, Rozemarijn hosted a party at the diner to celebrate. In the midst of the revelry, Dr. Zarv approached Niels. "See, there's no problem so big that Star Fleet can't solve it," he said with a wink. Hearing that, Niels decided right then and there that he was going to be a Star Fleet officer one day. Standing on a table, the precocious six year-old declared his intention to join Star Fleet. His declaration evoked a mix of laughter and applause from those present.

It soon became clear that Niels' dream of joining Star Fleet was not a fleeting one. Realizing this, Rozemarijn made every effort to help him fulfill his dream. Though she had no Star Fleet experience, she knew there were some job skills that were universal. She started giving Niels odd jobs around the restaurant, hoping to teach him these skills. With each passing year, he gained more and more responsibilities in the diner.

Rozemarijn talked to Dr. Zarv, who immediately rallied behind Niels' dream. The weekly meetings at the diner soon turned into tutoring sessions for the young boy. When Niels showed an aptitude for engineering, Dr. Zarv contacted some colleagues in the Engineering Corps. They were able to get him a list of reading materials and some old tools to tinker with. For his 13th birthday, Dr. Zarv got him a subscription to a selection of the leading engineering journals.

By the time he turned 18, Niels was well versed in all aspects of running a diner. Additionally, he could tear down and rebuild any of the kitchen equipment with ease. With all the support, it was no surprise to anyone when he passed his entrance exam.

During a party celebrating Niels' acceptance into Star Fleet, Rozaemarijn collapsed to the floor. Niels rushed her to the nearest medical center. While the nurses took her to a treatment room, one of them stayed in the lobby with Niels. The nurse asked about how his mother was dealing with having Iverson's Disease. Niels' confused response prompted the nurse to divulge Rozemarijn's secret. Not only did she have Iverson's Disease, but she had been hiding that fact for six years.

Niels couldn't believe that his mother had never told him of the diagnosis. When she was well enough to return home, Niels told his mother that he intended to give up Star Fleet. He argued that someone needed to to care for her and keep Rosie's running. Rozemarijn disagreed, believing it more important that Niels follow his dreams.

After a few weeks of tense arguments, Rozemarijn put her foot down. She informed Niels that she was selling the diner and would use the funds to move to a long-term care facility. If Niels stayed in Seattle, there would be no diner to work in or home to live in. Like a baby bird kicked from its nest, Niels now found himself struggling to make it on his own.

Angered by this turn of events, Niels begrudgingly left for San Francisco and the Academy. To make matters worse, after arriving at the Academy, Niels learned that his mother had lied about selling the diner. The lie created a larger rift between them. Throughout his studies, Niels had very little contact with his mother, but still checked up on her through Timo, Rosie’s long-time head cook. The whole exchange soured Niels' dream. Though Star Fleet no longer held the same sheen it had as a child, he now felt it was his only path in life.

During his time at the Academy, Niels’s life entered a holding pattern. The idea of venturing off into space to follow a Star Fleet career now filled him with apprehension. At the same time, he knew that his home would never be the same again. As a result, Niels pursued multiple minors, hoping that the extra work would prevent him from graduating and allow a different solution to present itself. However, it only managed to postpone the inevitable for a few years.

Shortly after graduating from the Academy, Niels was assigned to the engineering department of the USS Charon, NCC-88003, under the command of Captain Harrison Boislevesque.
