Personal History

===Early Life===

Mike was born in London, England and spent most of his life there with his Maternal Grandparents. He was born to Abigail and Jonathan Hobritz, both of whom were serving Starfleet officers and doted on their Son. Both were members of the USS Jolene's crew, Abigail was the First Officer and Jonathan the Chief Tactical Officer. Mike's memories of his parents are few in number and only bits an pieces, but one thing he was certain of was their love. Tragedy struck at a young age for Mike, his parents were killed when the Jolene was destroyed following a warp core breach. The Jolene was on a cataloguing mission in the Beta Quadrant, when a spatial anomaly struck the vessel causing critical damage. Hobritz was evacuated when the ship was ordered to be abandoned, he was on one of the first two shuttles to leave the doomed vessel.

The boy Mike was returned to his family on Earth, more specifically his Maternal Grandparents Mabel and Ernest Henshaw. His Gran worked as a Nurse at various London hospitals, and his Grandad was a Starfleet Engineer who resigned following the death of his Daughter and Son in Law. It wasn't the first time that Mabel and Ernest had lost a child, their other Son was killed in a mountain climbing accident. More than likely with the loss of their own children, Mabel and Ernest became very protective of their Grandson. Probably to the point of being overprotective and which could have inadvertently contributed to Mike's shyness.

Hobritz received a very loving upbringing with his Grandparents, the boy wanted for nothing at all. He spent a lot of his free time with his Grandad, Ernest was a keen Gardner and kept his hand in with his Engineering skills. Those skills were called for by some of civilian freighter Captains, which gave Mike time on space vessels. Before he was old enough to really help with repairs, young Hobritz would either play with the freighter children or spend his time watching others ships come and go. On one such visit he saw an aged Sovereign class starship, that was on its way to being decommissioned, Mike was in love. Mabel also insisted that her Grandson visited hospitals with her and encouraged the boy to always try and help people whenever he could.

While at school Mike studied hard and was quite athletic and loved to run, though he was found to be a very shy young man and found it hard to make friends, sometimes he would fall victim to bullies. The only friend he could truly depend on at school was Coris, a Caitian boy who stood by Hobritz in the face of those who would try and taunt the Human boy. Due to the size of the young Caitian, which was larger than most fully grown humans, the bullying subsided against Mike but didn't completely stop. Hobritz still fell foul to the undesirables at times, usually when he was alone.

While he was at High School and at one of his lowest peaks, because of the treatment he received from people, Mike's Grandparents got him a Jack Russell terrier as something to focus on. The pup had an instant effect on Hobritz and he found that he had something else really pure in his life. The dog was named Gizmo, as it seemed to love exploring Ernest's workshop and storeroom of spare ship parts. The arrival of Gizmo also coincided with the departure of Coris, who returned to his homeworld with his parents, though the friends would write to each other often.

Following his graduation from High School, while having a keen interest in Engineering, Mike broadened his horizons a little by helping out more at hospitals with his Gran. Though he would find time to help Ernest on a freighter whenever he could. After doing that for nearly two years Hobritz applied to join Starfleet, which was followed by an invitation to take the entrance exam. The young man was delighted to pass the test on the first try, though he truly doubted he could make it.

Starfleet Academy

Hobritz left for Starfleet Academy at the age of 18 feeling excited and nervous, though his nervousness reared its ugly head more often. While on the shuttle to the Academy, the soon to be Cadet met Christian Grix. Christian who was also to become a Cadet, would become Mike's best friend over the course of the four years at the Academy, though their personalities were drastically different. Grix was far from quiet and took the bull by the horns, while Mike would tend to stay back and try and keep a low profile. Not that Christian would let his friend be left and insisted in one way or another that they did things together. Some of Mike's previous and painful experiences followed him into the Academy, or more specifically his memories of those events. In the then Cadet Hobritz's mind the Academy was a school and judged all schools to be the same. However early in his Academic life he was lucky enough to meet Doctor Eden Roth, she quickly saw the Cadet was carrying some proverbial baggage. Eden took it upon herself to help the young man and would have a lasting effect on him.

Cadet Hobritz studied hard and threw himself into his studies, he would read as much material on ships systems as he could, though he found that practical training exercises to be the most educational. Mike also happily joined in the with sporting teams at the Academy, with sports such as running and swimming. Despite being socially awkward initially, he like always was fine after he got to know people. But the people he would call friends, were very low in numbers.

During his time at the Academy Mike was seen to be in an awkward disposition, when it came to talking and trusting others.  It was noticed by Doctor Eden Roth, who held many sessions with the troubled young man during his Academic tenure.  Though the sessions started on a professional basis, the relationship grew more and more and eventually led to Mike kissing Eden on graduation day.

It was agreed by both Eden and Mike, that they would both keep the relationship to themselves, until they were at least within one rank of each other.  That was to avoid the appearance of impropriety, though there was absolutely none it might not have looked to be the case.  During his time away the two of them agreed to maintain contact, something which both of them took seriously and did so as much as possible.

USS Sheridan DD-4086

Mike's first assignment was to the destroyer USS Sheridan, serving as a Junior Engineering Officer.  His time on the ship was very brief, but while he was aboard he became convinced there was a conspiracy.  Following several incidents which involved the ships warp engines, including a serious injury to a Crewman, Hobritz brought his suspicions to the command staff.  Soon after his report there was an explosion in the observation lounge, Mike took the brunt of the explosion and was rushed for emergency treatment on Starbase Alpha.

After been placed on medical leave, Hobritz and Eden decided to take a vacation together, giving them more time to get to know each other.  After he was deemed fit for duty, Mike received orders to report to the USS Gettysburg for duty.  Along with his new posting orders, the young Engineer was promoted to the rank of Ensign.
