Personal History

Hathain grew up as the only child to Sitak and Telen on the colony of Trilan through a perfectly mundane childhood. She attended her classes, scoring as well as required of any Vulcan student. The week before she underwent Kolinahr, however, Nova Squadron performed a show as part of a Federation event, and captured the young Vulcan's imagination. The impact, or at least the memory of it, stuck with her through the purging ceremony, and cemented her desire to join Star Fleet and become a pilot.

With a new goal, she was able to focus the choices she made through the remainder of her schooling with a view to passing the Academy entrance exams, being accepted with relative ease. Hathain applied for the pilots' programmes, and met with mixed success. The requisite mathematics were trivial - she could plot and astrogate practically in her sleep - but the actual coordination necessary to fly while doing it escaped her. She ended up figuratively crashing out of the programme and being forced to change her majors.

Undeterred, however, she moved on to the management and guidance of auxiliary craft - a decision questioned by some of her peers due to the overall change in tactical doctrine which now disfavoured the use of small craft in engagements lately dominated by capital craft.

It was while on Earth that she met Sreilen, a young philosopher and xenotheologian who happily accepted her family's more liberal interpretation of Surak's teachings and would happily challenge her to defend it on more than one occasion. Hathain was late to pon farr, but Sreilen proved a willing mate when it did arrive, and they entered a formal union not long after.

On graduation from the Academy, Hathain was assigned to the USS Rutledge, a New Orleans-class frigate, only a few years into the class' first planned refit. As cadet cruises go, hers was quite eventful; she was aboard the ship when it discovered the Setlik III Massacre, and helped plan the hot-drop rescue of the surviving colonists executed by Captain Maxwell and her superior, then-Lieutenant Miles O'Brien. She stayed with the crew during the Federation-Cardassia War before transferring a few years later.

The USS Arondight was one of the new Akira-class cruisers - they were the pick of the Fleet for all sorts of prestigious reasons, but Hathain wanted to be assigned to one because it had a flight deck. She finally got to use her training to full effect, justifying her initially irrational-seeming choices. However, when the Fleet engaged the Dominion, she soon gained first-hand experience of why small craft had fallen out of favour in recent centuries - not only were all of the initial sorties wiped out even when fighting the smaller Jem'Hadar ships, but their own capital ships suffered horrifying losses, too.

Star Fleet is nothing if not adaptive, however, and solutions were soon found for their shielding problems. Peregrine fighters replaced the earlier sub-warp Kaneda space superiority fighters, but it still wasn't enough. In 2374 that couldn't become any clearer for Hathain: the Arondight was destroyed, and less than twenty percent of her crew made it to escape pods. She made it back to Earth and visited briefly with Sreilen before being called back to active service.

Her flight ops experience versus the Dominion as well as the fact she was already familiar with the Akira hull meant that she secured immediate transfer to another such vessel, the USS Osceola. That cruiser made it through the remainder of the War, surviving even the most brutal of the grinding battles against the Jem'Hadar fleet, before meeting their end in a skirmish with Romulan vessels during the outbreak of a fresh conflict with the RSE. Almost all the crew escaped the ship's destruction and were picked up by relief forces.

Hathain decided to return to San Francisco and take a professorial role with the Academy, teaching fleet strategy and small craft tactics to upcoming cadets, and was tenured for more than a decade. It was an important reprieve from the heavy action she'd endured up to that point - she may well enjoy her species natural emotional robustness and endurance, but even Vulcans needed to find a less stressful environment eventually.

Her lighter duty was not to last forever: the outbreak of the First General War resulted in the drafting of many of the Fleet's veterans and experienced officers to fight the combined forces of the Cardassians, Romulans and Dominion. Quite why the former empires would join the Gamma Quadrant power again after such a costly conflict the first time around was always unclear to Hathain, and the fact that the borders at the close of the War were largely where they were when it started made it even more confusing. It seemed a pointless conflict. She fought aboard the refit Galaxy-class, the USS Pavonis, which had swapped a large proportion of its shuttle complement for the newly-designed Valkyrie SSF.

For the ship's meritorious action during the vicious conflict, the crew was awarded an Outstanding Unit Citation by their group commander, but the ship itself did not survive for long after receipt of the medal, and was destroyed in a pitched defence of an important supply corridor. She was heavily injured in the destruction, and had to be carried to an escape pod. It took her most of a year to recover in a supported-living ward. Hathain received a Purple Heart.

The Fleet was reorganised after the FGW, the fighting having shown Star Fleet that their entire line of existing ship classes and profiles had effectively become obsolete, despite all the refits and modular construction that went into building them in the first place. A radical shift occurred in everything from building principles to naming policy - as well as a troubling lurch back towards becoming a formal military arm of the UFP government compared to the paramilitary/civil defence format they'd taken before.

Hathain landed a commission aboard one of the earliest examples of the new philosophy, the USS Fearless CA-1000. She ended up fighting through another war with the Romulans while on the heavy cruiser, and then managed to survive the Borg invasion and subsequent Armaggedon Directive. She lost contact with Sreilen during this time, and assumed him assimilated with most of the rest of the Federation.

Eventually, the Borg were driven out and dismantled, and most of the damage of their occupation undone. Hathain was reunited with Sreilen, who'd managed to hide in a bunker on Luna of all places, with a small community of other academics, scientists and civilians who'd been cut off from New Berlin when the drones arrived. She decided to take a few years' accrued leave all at once - she got to see precious little of her mate as it was, and this time both of them had nearly perished. She found a taste for plant maintenance in miniature, and began cultivating bonsai. There was an almost meditative quality to it for her - something Sreilen would gently tease her for.

A new Enterprise was commissioned in 2406, and she was one of many that jumped at the chance to apply for a position on the ship. Her long service as a flight controller gave her an edge, however, and she landed a posting in their Flight Ops division. It was the largest ship she'd served on, and it was certainly an adjustment. When the USS Empire was completed, she answered a request for personnel there, too, to lend her experience to a fresh crew.

It was on this ship that she fought during the Krynar War, but she was long tired of fighting against existential threats and supposedly implacabale enemies. She was almost thankful that the 5th Fleet was not one of those selected to travel to the Krynar homeworld to prosecute the end of the war. Hathain was exhausted, if not actually ready to retire.

After discussion with Sreilen and her parents, she settled for a compromise; she would transfer to a star base and take a rather more civilian role. It would be far less likely that she would lead any more pilots to their deaths, or be forced to fight at all. It made a fine decompression after fighting the Inquisition.

Disappointments: Not bringing more of her wings through their deployments

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The very first sortie she went into as a CAG manager
Best Time: Watching a Nova Squadron show as a teenager, and deciding that she wanted to be a pilot
Most Crucial Experience: Attending the declaration of peace after the First General War, and realising that it was possible to retain the values of the Federation and still survive in a hostile galaxy
Role Model: Cdr George Birch, her Academy tutor and first superior officer during initial mobilisation
