Personal History

Silas Harker was born on a small colony near the Federation/Romulan border. His parents were unmarried, and his father, a small arms trader, abandoned the family when Silas was only four years old. He was raised by his mother until just after his thirteenth birthday, when she fell ill and died. Her last words begged Silas to forgive his father for leaving the colony. With no immediate family existing, he was taken into the care of neighbors who were close to the family, Daniel and Judith Seward. The pair formed a shaky relationship with Silas, bringing some stability back into the young man’s life. However, in the early years of the General War, Silas was presented with the opportunity to join the crew of a smuggling ship, the S.S. Cook. Business was picking up for the Orion Syndicate in light of the war, and the Cook was in their service. Silas, having finished his primary education, left the Sewards to join the crew of the Cook.

Over the next several years Silas learned a variety of skills ranging from piloting, confidence tricks, weapon use, and basic first aid. A year after the war Silas decided to pursue further medical training, and was enrolled at a university on Risa, under the bankroll of the Star Cartel. At the end of his four years there, he returned to his life as a smuggler. Three years later, after a dispute involving an Orion slave girl, Silas was forced to leave the cartel’s employ and flee to Earth.

With little money to his name and no active connections, Silas reluctantly enlisted in the Star Fleet Marines as a medic. He rose to the rank of corporal during the Romulan and Borg wars. At the end of those conflicts, Silas was given an extended leave of absence. Over the next six months he absolved numerous debts and patched up relations with members of the Star Cartel. He also paid a visit to the Sewards for the first time in several years. When he returned to Star Fleet, Silas made the decision to become a full doctor. He enrolled at Star Fleet Academy with the endorsement of his commander in the marines. During his time there he continued contact with people he’d known during his smuggling years, but never returned to a life of crime. In his last year before graduation, Silas met Rebecca Parish, a local schoolteacher. She fell in love with him despite his icy exterior, and the two now share a prolonged engagement.
