Personal History

Josh Greenfield’s parents were disappointed when he decided not to follow in their footsteps and attend Star Fleet Academy. Josh had had enough of space and starships and he wanted to attend college on Earth and study marine biology. Since a young age he was interested and fascinated with aquatic life, especially from Earth. So when he graduated high school he decided to attend university in Sydney, Australia.

At the university, Josh met Jennifer Bram, a native Australian who had a love and passion for aquatic life. The two were immediately smitten with each other and began dating. They were married six years later between completion of their Master degrees and the start of their Marine Biology PHD programs.

Once completing their Doctorate programs they were both employed by the university to teach and do research. After five years of a blissful marriage and successful careers, Jennifer became pregnant. Nine months later their son was born. They named his Simon and called him Si for short.

Growing up Si’s parents were always very supportive of him. At an early age Si showed signs of being musically gifted. As he got older and expressed an interest in music, his parent’s bought him a guitar, arranged for guitar and singing lessons. They proudly attended everyone of his school concerts and recitals.

Si was so talented that his parents thought he might choose a career in music. But Si also had passion for astronomy. Unlike his father, Si love space. He loved starships and he yearned to one day travel among the stars. When he wasn’t playing his guitar, he could be found at his telescope or reading about starships and space travel.

The first day of sixth grade Si met a fair skinned, red haired boy with freckles name Nick Robinson. The boy was sitting alone at lunch so he went over and sat with them. During that lunch the two boys realized they had a lot in common especially in music. Like Si, Nick was musically talented. They quickly became best friends.

Sophomore year of High School was a turning point in Si and Nick’s relationship. Since he was thirteen, Si knew that he liked guys. He thought it would pass as he tried to like girls. But it didn’t. He didn’t tell anyone, he didn’t know how, so he just tried to ignore the whole subject all together. But at the beginning of 10th grade, Si realized his feelings for Nick were more than just of a friendship. He was attracted to him.

One day after practicing some songs together, Si, got the courage to tell Nick that he was gay and that he also had feelings for him. Nick responded by kissing him. Much to Si’s surprise and delight the attraction was mutual.

A few weeks later Si and Nick got their parent’s together and came out to them at the same time explaining that they had feelings for each other and they were boyfriends.

Both their parents took the news well and were supportive of them.

There were other same sex couples at their high school, so Si and Nick’s relationship didn’t cause any drama or draw too much attention. Their relationship was very good, they did all the typical things that boyfriends did and high school seemed to pass way to fast.

The first signs of trouble in the relationship came in the middle of their senior year when they were choosing colleges. Nick planned to study music and have a career in that field. But Si, though he loved music, wanted to attend Star Fleet Academy and have a career in Star Fleet. Si’s parent’s supported his decision, even though his father didn’t want a Star Fleet career, he wouldn’t deny his blessing for his son to have one.

Nick had no interest in Star Fleet and hoped Si would come around and join him at the university to study music. But Si’s mind was made up. Nick was not happy when Si was accepted to the Academy. But they agreed they could still make their relationship work. After high school graduation they spent their last summer together and was mostly a happy one. In the fall, Nick stayed in Sydney and attended the university and Si went off to Star Fleet Academy.

While Si excelled at his studies at the Academy, the same success didn’t carryover to his and Nick’s relationship. Both met other people, in Si’s case, he met a lot of other people. It was evident to both young men that their romantic relationship had run its course. They mutually broke up but vowed to remain best friends.

Surprisingly, this worked out. Both moved on quickly but still remained really close as friends. They would still meet and sometimes play music together, and swap stories about their current love lives. Both attended and celebrated each other college graduations. Nick took a job with the Sydney city orchestra and Si was assigned to Star Base Alpha.

At the Academy, Si had chose Tactical as his career path. He enjoyed his classes and balanced his social and academic life surprisingly well graduating ninth in his class. After graduation he disappointed when he learned that he had been assigned to Star Base Alpha and not a starship. However, he endeavored to do his best.

As it turned out, being posted to Star Base Alpha was a positive experience and he gain a lot of experience but Si still longed for a ship assignment. After a year, he applied for a transfer and was thrilled when his transfer was granted to the USS Copernicus.
