Personal History

Human Orlando Grant met Haliian Raquina Andul when they both served aboard the USS Aegis, an older Escort classed Federation Starship from the General War era. Orlando was a Tactical Officer aboard the vessel, while Raquina was a Science Officer. After some time, they began dating, and eventually wed. They both eventually climbed through the ranks, with Raquina becoming Chief Science Officer, and Orlando becoming a Command-level Officer.

Shortly after their promotions, Raquina found out she was pregnant with Miles. After much discussion, Raquina retired from Star Fleet to concentrate on the pregnancy and initial raising of their child. Once Miles was born, Orlando took some leave time for the first couple of months of Miles’ life. As a half-Haliian, he has some access to their touch empathy, but only when he really concentrates. This did not have any impact on his life growing up.

Miles had an enjoyable childhood, especially when Orlando decided to retire from Active Duty and place himself in the Reserves to spend more time with his family when Miles was 9 years old. He grew up hearing the stories from his parents of their adventures in Star Fleet. He knew from a young age that he wanted to join, but, at the time, didn’t know which Department he would fit into. This would change during his High School Years.

Though he was the child of Star Fleet Officers, Miles’ parents had wanted him to live a normal of a life as possible. As such, Miles had attended Public schools in the San Francisco area, where the family had decided to settle given Orlando’s status as a Reserve Officer. He did well in school, had a decent amount of friends (though not one he could call a best friend), and was tracking along with both scholarly and sports extracurricular activities.

One day when he was a sophomore in High School led him to the path of what he wanted to do when he joined Star Fleet. He witnessed a closer friend of his, Trenton Fields, being bullied by some upperclassman. He noted the bullying was due to Trenton needing leg braces from an illness that had come on suddenly. The illness had been cured, but there was a wait time and further diagnostics before they could medically fix his legs, so he was subject to the torment for that brief time period.

Miles intervened on his friend’s behalf. At first, he attempted to talk the bullies down, knowing that resorting to violence was not always the initial answer. Even when the bullies did engage in a physical fight, Miles used the training in defense and control tactics he learned from his father and other instructors to wear down, defend, and immobilize his opponents. He did not have to hold the defense long, as teachers were called and were able to prevent any further violence.

Miles was commended for his actions and keeping a cool head. The event also allowed for him and Trenton to become closer as friends, leading the two becoming best friends. Miles also noted one of the bullies had gotten a lucky hit on him, which caused a small scar above his lip. Rather than get it fixed, he decided to leave the scar as both a reminder and badge of honor.

It also made him realize that he wanted to protect others first and foremost. This led him to deciding that when he joined Star Fleet, it would be through the Security Department. However, his admission to the Academy would be delayed.

When an unknown force that would later be identified as the Krynar attacked Federation Space, his father was activated from Reserves to help with the threat due to the elder Grant’s experience. Though there became debate over which early skirmish or battle it was, an Officer came to the door of where Miles lived with his mother with the news that his father had been killed in action early on in the Krynar War. The family received many of the posthumous awards that Orlando would have received.

Due to his father’s death, Miles rethought whether or not to join Star Fleet. Instead of joining fresh out of high school, he took up work with a local Security firm, still intent on protecting others. After only a little over a year, however, he sat down with his mother for a long talk. Once he was able to properly process the grief of losing his father, Miles decided to set his sights back on to Star Fleet. He attended therapy to assist with the grieving process, as well as finished out his three year contract with the Security firm, before entering the Academy at a slightly older age than most other Cadets. In honor of his late father, Miles decided to double major in Tactical. He also did this when the intent that, if necessary, he could cross train in the Tactical Departments.
