Grand Nagus Zek

The Grand Nagus is the leader of the Ferengi Alliance, as well as the financial leader of billions of Ferengi. The Grand Nagus is generally the richest man in the heavily capitalistic Ferengi society.
Virtually all decisions that affect the Alliance require the approval of the Grand Nagus, whose power is backed by the 'Ferengi Bill of Opportunities' and supported by the 'Board of Liquidators.'
Every prominent Ferengi businessman seeks to do business with the Nagus, whose authority is backed by the Ferengi Bill of Opportunities.

The Nagus's offices are located in the Tower of Commerce on Ferenginar, where he presides over the Alliance from the Chamber of Opportunity. Petitioners regularly vye to speak to the Nagus, in order to solicit advice on business ventures and decisions. In doing so, they are required to pay their respects using slips of gold-pressed latinum. After paying respects, their petition is summarized by the First Clerk before the Nagus reached a decision.

The First Clerk has the power to remove a Grand Nagus from office, though only in the rare circumstances that it is overwhelmingly obvious he has become medically or mentally unfit for the role (i.e. advancing senility).

While greed and selfishness are generally considered respected traits for Ferengi, the Grand Nagus is expected to think for the greed of the entire Ferengi Alliance, not just his own.

The Nagus resides in a designated private residence, which has been rumored to contain latinum-plated fixtures. The Nagus always carries a staff, and it is traditional for a Ferengi to kiss it upon meeting him.

The Grand Nagus also possesses the ability to appoint a "Grand Proxy" to act in his name in matters which he was unable or unwilling to deal with personally.

A Nagus can overrule the decisions of the Ferengi Commerce Authority (FCA) if he so chose, such as in matters of business license revocation.

After the death of a Grand Nagus, their remains are typically vacuum-desiccated and later sold or auctioned off as collectibles.

History

The first Grand Nagus, according to lore, was Gint, a Ferengi who brought the ideals of capitalism and greed to the Ferengi people, and who wrote the Rules of Acquisition.

At some point in Ferengi history, the second wife of Grand Nagus Bork fled with profit she had secretly accumulated herself. Bork blamed his sons for failing to stop here, and deprived them of his wealth upon his death. Instead, he invested it in the "Tomb of Grand Nagus Bork," a pyramid made from melted latinum mixed with silver. By 2372, the Tomb of Grand Nagus Bork was a location of interest on Ferenginar.

Following the reforms of Grand Nagus Zek, the Grand Nagus now also serves as the head of the Economic Congress of Advisors, the Ferengi legislature. The Nagus may propose bills before the Congress and may veto or attempt to financially influence the vote, but may not vote directly.

Rom became Grand Nagus in late 2375, succeeding long-standing Grand Nagus Zek.

  • This came following a series of social reforms, among which was the introduction of the "Congress of Economic Advisors," a new legislative body that limited the Nagus' power.
