Personal History
Cassandra Givens was born to Max and Martha Givens with little to no fanfare. By the time Cass arrived on the scene, her parents were barely civil and oftentimes, merely tried to coexist in as nonvolatile of a way as possible. By the time she turned one, her father had decided to turn his wide array of skills towards the private sector, specifically bounty hunting. This had the benefit of not only pissing her mother off but also taking her father away for months at a time.
Her mother did the best she could running a large, traditional farm and raising a precocious child. While never unloved, Cass quickly learned to fend for herself and rely solely on her own abilities, a trait that would be both a great strength and a grave weakness in her adult life. Her father’s inability to truly be consistent in her life only reinforced this mindset.
Despite everything, Cass was a very intelligent child, capable of quickly picking up new concepts and ideas. However, like many intelligent children, she found herself unstimulated by school and subsequently, turned her energy to troublemaking. She was regularly in and out of the principal’s office, despite her mother frequently moving her from school to school due to the belief that she was merely falling into the wrong crowd.
This pattern of troublemaking continued until the summer she turned 14, when her mother, in a fit of exasperation, demanded that her father deal with her behavioral issues. Her mother, likely assumed that would have involved her father coming back to have a stern word with Cass, but it actually involved him taking her for a “bonding” trip. To this day, her mother believes that they went sightseeing on Vulcan of all places but in truth, her father brought her on a bounty hunt, like the irresponsible asshole he was.
However, it worked, though not for reasons that either parent assumed. During the trip, Cass was exposed to areas that were drastically affected by the lack of personnel and resources to keep them orderly. She observed suffering like she was unable to comprehend and yet, she witnessed people still trying to do the right thing, to make things right. It made her stop and consider exactly how fortunate she had been as a child, despite her difficulties. It also made her consider what she could do about such a massive problem.
Suddenly, her mother was faced with an inquisitive and wondering teenager with big, difficult questions. Cass no longer seemed satisfied with life in quiet Kentucky and her mother seemed resigned to lose her daughter, much like she had her husband.
At the age of 18, after turning her grades and performance around, Cass was accepted into the Academy. While her scores gave her eligibility for the tactical and engineering tracks, she chose security, feeling that it was the track that would provide her with the best opportunity to make a difference.
Cass was by no means the top of her class but she was considered favorably by all of her classmates. While she could be gruff and blunt, her honesty was always delivered with the best of intentions, though it often ruffled feathers among staff and upperclassmen. After four years, she graduated and was assigned to the USS Cairo as a security Midshipman.
Due to her ability to think quickly, communicate well and willingness to do hard work, Cass quickly rose through the ranks before being selected as the Chief of Security for the USS Churchill. This was a position she thrived in, despite the administrative hurdles of assuming a department head position. She felt it provided her an avenue to actually address issues and problems within her realm and she became known as a problem solver as she progressed as a Department Head.
Because of long term personnel challenges and short falls following the Krynar conflict, as well as the inter-fleet conflict, Cassandra was once again presented with the opportunity to rise through the ranks at an exponential rate when she was offered the First Officer role on the USS Valkyrie after only having been a Chief of Security for 2 years.
As luck would have it, Cassandra had only served as FO on the Valkyrie for three missions when Starfleet was faced with the threat from the Megasphere. Due to the sheer magnitude of the threat, Starfleet not only activated numerous reserve personnel but also moved many young command officers into the captain’s chair for the battle, Cassandra included. Cassandra was given command of the USS Havoc, which was assigned to the last line of defense for the battle. Not only did Cass command the Havoc successfully, she took command of the perimeter line when the USS Ashland took critical damage to its communication array.
Due to her success during the Megasphere battle, Cassandra was given permanent command of the Havoc and promoted to Captain. As had been the case for much of her career, there were high expectations for her performance. Unfortunately, during her second mission as the Havoc’s commanding officer, she made a critical tactical error while patrolling the DMZ that nearly led to the loss of the Havoc and her crew. While Cass’s independence and decisive decision making was often viewed as a strength, her unwillingness to wait for reinforcements and her decision to confront a smuggling operation without the full details was nearly catastrophic when the Havoc was drawn into an ambush and crippled. If Fearless had not come to their rescue, it is likely that significant loss of life would have occurred, beyond what did occur.
In light of this event and the conclusion by Command that Cassandra had been given too much responsibility too quickly, Cassandra was pulled to HQ. She was placed into a command refresher program with the hopes that some of her rashness would diminish with experience and maturity. Following her completion, she was assigned as the executive assistant to Admiral Bill Anderson, a member of the Commander Oversight Committee. This was done with hopes that exposure to the inner workings of the admiralty and command would mold her into a model command officer. As such, Cass is trusted with being Admiral Anderson’s eyes and ears in the field, evaluating potential problems as they develop.
Recently, Cassandra was dispatched to Deep Space 9 to evaluate the state of the USS Artemis, following its disastrous mission to reclaim the USS Callisto. After approximately 8 weeks of evaluating the ship’s logs, speaking to certain members of the crew and taking steps to fill in certain positional holes left by the last mission, Cass was informed by Admiral Anderson that she would be assuming command of the Artemis for its imminent launch, much to Cass’ displeasure.
