Personal History

Gav was born aboard the starship USS Potemkin during a deep space exploration mission. He grew up on Star Fleet vessels and stations as he followed either of his parents throughout their various postings. Mostly he lived with his mother, but his parents always kept the children together, to afford them as normal a life as was possible. While on the USS Standish, Gav met and fell in love for the first time, unfortunately it was his 3rd grade teacher, and although she was very kind to him, he was embarrassed beyond words. This small incident made him promise himself he would guard his thoughts and behaviors very carefully, and let few people know what he was really thinking.

Gav was always a very good student, and furiously applied himself to whatever he was studying. Mediocre was never good enough. He had to excel in everything. He tries his hand at acting, but found he did not have the emotional depth to play a wide array of characters. He thought that debate might be more suited to his serious temperament. He was a good debater and won several province wide competitions; but that came to an end when his mother was transferred to Earth to assume her new duties as Chief of the Starship Design Bureau. Gav discovered rugby on a school outing in Australia. He understood the finesse of the game, and yet was able to relate to the pure physical demands of playing the sport. He fell in love with the game, and the after game parties and beer never hurt.

While on Earth, Gav met Sera on a clear night while stargazing with friends. He saw her from across the small pasture where everyone was laying in the grass and knew immediately she was the one for him. But it took Sera a little longer to realize this for herself. Gav clumsily asked her out for an evening and they had a wonderful time. Gav found he could open himself up to this woman and not feel the least bit embarrassed about what he thought or said. Whatever it was, Sera seemed to understand and that made Gav feel very happy; the kind of soul deep happiness that never goes away. The kind of happiness one never wants to let go of; the kind that lasts a life time.

When Gav told his parents he wanted to marry Sera they were mortified. Gav was crushed. It was then he grew up a little and simply told his parents that he would marry Sera regardless of their feelings. Gav and Sera were married on Telar Prime a year later. Gav’s parents were even more displeased when he informed them he would delay taking the entrance exam to Star Fleet Academy until Sera was done with her residency. Gav stuck to his plan and he and Sera lived on Earth while she attended Medical School, and then throughout her Residency in Emergency Medicine. Gav and Sera have two children, named Bors 3 years and Helna 6. Gav’s wife is an Emergency Physician on Star base Alpha, which is where she and the children make a home. Now it is her turn while Gav attends Star Fleet Academy.

While basking in the nearness of Star Fleet Academy one day, Gav had taken the children to talk to Boothby on the Academy grounds. But he was already talking to someone, a young human female who seemed to be very upset, and was crying. Gav steered the children away and distracted them by starting a game of keep-away. When the young cadet saw Gav and the children playing it seemed to cheer her, and Gav offered to include her in the simple game, she joined in while Boothby watched, with that knowing smile of his. Afterwards, Gav invited Judith Tucker to their home for dinner. The two became fast friends in short order. Gav is hoping he can complete Star Fleet Academy and be posted to Tucker’s ship, the Gettysburg

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Piloting and Navigation
Academy Minor(s): Starship Tactics, and Military History
Hobbies and Pastimes: Gav enjoys Strategema, Chess, and Go
Short-Term Goals: To become an excellent starship pilot
Long-Term Goals: Become DH of Tactical and eventually earn his own command
Personality: Gav is quiet and somewhat introverted, until one see’s him with his family or children. In those instances he is very outgoing and loves to interact with others. Gav does not understand anyone who does not want children, or the challenge of raising them. Gav is very hard on himself, always expecting the best possible success from all his endeavors; unfortunately, he sometimes holds on so tight to whatever he is wrestling with he often loses his grasp
Sense of Humor: Best described as crotchety, and or curmudgeon. He frequently grumbles under his breath, sotto voce’
Phobias: Earth felines
Likes: Children of any kind or stripe, time with family, time with his wife, being successful
Dislikes: He disdains Vulcan’s because they “usually think they are better than everyone else”
Pet Peeves or Gripes: When he is the center of a joke or prank
Achievements: Gav is a good Rugby player, he especially loves a good tough scrum. He is a natural mathematician, and has a gift for “situational awareness”

Strengths: Dogged determination, solid common sense
Weaknesses: Lack of self-confidence

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Gav has feet too big for his body, and they seem to cause him to stumble and falter at the worst times. During a rugby match he tripped the player running the ball and caused him to stumble, but ran the wrong direction to the goal
Best Time: The birth of his children
Most Crucial Experience: When Gav was 18 years of age, his father was assistant chief engineer on the USS Leonov. Leonov was assigned exploration duty and was involved in a planetary survey of a newly charted class M planet. Gav’s teacher thought that a field trip to study botany would be a good lesson for her students. She asked Gavor if he would give his permission for Gav to attend the field trip. On the day of the trip, all of the transporters were occupied, or down for repair so the Captain gave permission for the class to ride down to the planet in a shuttle.

On the way to the surface the shuttle suffered a catastrophic engine failure. The panel in front of the shuttle’s pilot exploded, rendering him unconscious. Gav quickly pulled the pilot out of the chair and took the controls of the shuttle. Not only did he successfully land the shuttle in a near perfect powerless landing, but he also assisted his teacher in keeping order among the frightened students. That day, Gav learned that he could think under pressure, and it changed his life forever
Role Model: Gav loves history. One of his favorite historical topics is the American Civil War. One of the men commanding the Union Army was Ulysses S. Grant. Grant had graduated near the bottom of his class, left the army in disgust, and proceeded to fail at everything he ever tried; until the ACW erupted and Grant returned to duty with the Union Army. He directed a very successful campaign in the west, and was noticed by President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln saw in Grant something that all his other generals lacked; a will to win whatever the cost. Lincoln promoted him to command all the Union armies and Grant went on to be one of the best generals in American history. Gav found he could relate to someone who was a failure at everything, but kept doggedly slugging on no matter the cost
