Personal History
Gath grew up in what he thought of as a very typical Klingon family. It was only as he grew old enough for school that he learned how his family was unique. His days of public school were few. He soon got into too many fights and needed to have tutors. The irony was that he was not starting the fights on purpose, but would correct his classmates when they were wrong. They took offense and he defended himself. It wasn’t his fault they were wrong.
His father was a scientist and engineer. He designed and built specialized hand to hand weapons. As a scientist, his study of alloys helped him to use some of the best metals to create tools for special purposes, like a blade with a microscopic neutronium dust edge to it that could cut through almost any other metal. As an engineer, he developed ways for the weapons to be concealed, like a sword with a folding blade that reduced down to 15cm long and could fit into most pockets. His weapons were prized possessions, considered works of art and cost a great deal of money.
His mother was a teacher. She had taught history at the university, but after he was born, she changed to working part time as a curator for their museum and was a historical consultant to the government. She saw to his educational needs. His parents had taught him to question things, consider the source of information and to value the truth. His mother was quick to remind him that Klingon culture was rich with history of science and art. They weren’t always obsessed with blood lust. Who wrote the great sagas? Where did the operas come from?
It was indeed possible to be a capable warrior without looking and smelling like a targ. Kahless was a great warrior and a master tactician. He wasn’t just a mindless brute. The hero of all Klingons was in fact a very smart man who could outthink his enemies as well as best them in physical combat. A true warrior trains their mind as well as their body. How you stand in battle is important, not just for reaction time, but in how you are seen in the mind of your opponent. Thus, your attire and manners when you walk into a room are also important, so that you set in motion that which might be important later. Battle tends to be easy, it is during peace that a warrior is challenged most.
Sadly, just after he had reached the age of adulthood, his parents were killed in an accident. They were traveling from one of his mother’s conferences and the shuttle developed problems while at warp. It dropped out of warp too close to an asteroid field and was out of control. There were other passengers on the shuttle as well, but there were no survivors.
For a few years, Gath tried his best to meld into Klingon society. He was from the House of Baal and had the money from the estate of his parents, but it meant little. He managed to find work on a couple of ships friendly to his family, but he was disgusted by the common desire to raid and kill for almost any excuse. Having no tolerance for that life, he turned to the Federation. Gath shocked the testers by his high scores on the written exams. He further impressed them with his practical philosophies on many topics in the oral exams. The fact that he had already read most of the required texts covered in his classes made him a popular student with his instructors. He often presented interesting interpretations of some of the work that politely challenged some conventional opinions, but his debates were always polite and respectful. This earned him many letters of recommendation when he graduated.
His early Star Fleet career appears to take an interesting turn as his training became specialized and then classified. This is followed by some gaps where it is unclear what duties he was being assigned while on planetary installations, but it seemed to focus on a great deal of training and assisting on patrols where Klingon piracy was suspected. Over those few years, those areas become considerably quieter, helping to ease tensions between the Klingons and the Federation in general. His first permanent assignment to a ship was to the Aquila, where he served with honor.
