Personal History

Originally from Mars, Travis parents died whilst he was a toddler in a warp core breach onboard the Paradise Horizon, a intersystem cruise ship that they had spent two weeks celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary onboard. A public inquiry found the Paradise Horizon Disaster to be poor maintenance. He grew up in the care of his grandmother, Deborah Gates. Deborah died whilst Travis was eighteen, leaving the young man nothing more than a inconsequential inheritance, and on his own.

Travis had had enough of Mars. He enlisted to the crew of a salvage ship, aptly named the Vulture. He would become an apprentice to a chief engineering officer, a man by the name of Oscar O’Driscoll. It was under O’Driscoll’s guidance that Travis began to understand the complexities of starship systems. Though not a prosperous or exciting occupation, scouring the depths of space for worthwhile starship debris of those who had met unwelcome misfortune, he was a quick learner, and it provided solid foundations for what the Academy would build upon.

By twenty Travis had said farewell to the Vulture and his mentor, transferring to the role of an engineering officer onboard a deep space salvage ship, the Aurora. Whilst scavenging the Felix Asteroid Belt the ship fell prey to pirates, lured by the remains of mining ship. Their sensors were ineffective at differentiating between asteroids and the small vessels employed by The Crimson Marauders, and were caught off guard. The Aurora was boarded, and all of the crew taken prisoner. On return to the Marauders support station the crew were shipped to various worlds. Travis’s was separated from his fellows due to his engineering expertise. He was coerced into maintaining their systems and short range craft. It’s not clear how much pressure was applied to the engineer to make him cooperate, but he would remain on that support station for the next four years.

Travis attempted to escape, employing his expertise, and new found trust to neutralise the stations sensors, tractor beams and to steal a short range craft. It’s never been established how the engineer earned enough trust to have access to those systems.

In response the Marauders launched their remaining ships to pursue the engineer. It was only the coincidental timing of a patrol of the USS Endeavour that transformed a desperate and folly attempt to escape captivity, into a viable new beginning. Recognising the folly of directly attacking a starfleet vessel the marauders retreated, and Travis was retrieved by Starfleet. He spent the remainder of his voyage in similar accommodation to that he had been familiar with the last four years - the Endeavour brig.

Whilst on board the Endeavour, the ship's Captain was inquisitively cautious about the man's experiences and motives, but identified his engineering proficiency as a candidate for the fleet. On arrival to Starbase 19, and on transfer to station security was Gate’s formally debriefed on his experience with the Marauders. Travis would spend another four weeks in custody in Starbase 19 as investigations continued as to whether his role with the Marauders was more conspirator than a prisoner. Meanwhile anti-piracy operations in the sector saw a significant decrease in the frequency of attacks over the next quarter and the engineers cooperation led to his unconditional release.

That period coincided with shore leave for the Endeavour. During that period it’s Captain continued to pursue her curiosity about Gate’s and his future. Four years a prisoner had left the engineer more isolated and alone in the Quadrant than he had ever been before. She would press him on three occasions that the fleet could use him, and on each occasion the engineer would deflect the invitation, but eventually, over a bottle of scotch, he had been talked into enlisting for the Academy.

Whilst in the Academy, and outside of his studies, Travis partnered with Richard Walker, a tactical cadet with special emphasis on piloting small craft. Together they retrofitted a decommissioned shuttle to break the Academies impulse track record around the Academies flight range. Competing against seven other teams of cadets. The pair broke the established record, but short of another team, finishing second.
