Personal History

Gar Arvis grew up the youngest child on a family farm on Bolarus IX. He worked long and hard as a youth, helping with the harvest, tending livestock and doing chores. Gar was a bright child who loved to watch his father tinker with the farm equipment, and by the time he was an adolescent, Gar could take apart and put together that same equipment blindfolded. He also began designing new equipment of his own. His natural aptitude for engineering led to the offer of several skilled jobs, but Gar instead decided to enlist in Star Fleet, longing to see the universe outside of the world that he already knew.

He spent much of his early career at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, where he met his former wife, Bala, a civilian who worked for one of the military contractors. They quickly fell in love and soon married. Two children, a son, Van, and a daughter, Ardra, were born in the early years of their marriage. Gar was able to spend time watching his son grow up, but after earning a tactical designation alongside his engineering rating, he found himself assigned to a starship only a few weeks after Ardra was born, thus he missed out on much of her formative years.

In tactical, Gar worked as a weapons tech and was later transferred to the USS Hydra where its then captain, Adaran 225, eventually tapped him to be Chief of the Boat. He enjoyed his new position and formed a good working relationship with Adaran. Just before the Third Romulan War broke out, though, he received notice from Bala that she was divorcing him, having fallen in love with someone else. The news came totally out of the blue and hit Gar hard. Most importantly, he knew that he wouldn't get to see his daughter, whom he had become closest to, as much as he had in the past, and he went through a short period of depression.

The war eventually took Gar's mind off his problems, and he worked hard to help keep the Hydra in prime fighting condition. Near the end of the war, though, the ship took serious damage during a battle, and much of the crew was killed or injured, including Adaran, who suffered critical injuries. Gar had survived with only a few cuts and bruises, and he led the efforts to evacuate the ship in the middle of the battle, helping to get the injured to other vessels or on medical shuttles. He received a Distinguished Service Globe for his efforts.

Once the Hydra was repaired, he found himself serving a new captain while Adaran had been removed and placed on medical leave, and he quickly learned that he wasn't going to get along as well with him as he had with the Hermat, thus he was more than eager to transfer to Adaran's new ship, the USS Columbia, when s/he contacted him and offered him the same position. Traveling from Star Base Bravo to Star Base Delta to join the crew, he was quite happy to be back in a comfortable environment again.
