Personal History

Annabelle Fuentes was born to a prostitute mother in the slums of Mexico City in a charity hospital. Given over to the local authorities, she was placed in a foster home with a couple who was just starting life and wanted to help raise a child. They took her in and for the first few years everything was fine, until her foster father turned to alcohol. He became abusive, leading her foster mother to take up drugs and alcohol herself.

Annabelle was often beaten for the smallest things as a child, being yelled at and growing scared to say a word in public. When she was beaten, she would be kept home from school, until the schools began to note her absence. They finally investigated, and discovered her living conditions. She was immediately whisked away, the last sight she had of her former family being the police putting them in handcuffs.

When she was 7, she was adopted by her parents, the Galloways. Joseph had been stationed in Mexico City with Starfleet, and he and Elizabeth had decided they wanted a third child, but Elizabeth had trouble having children due to genetic factors. Upon seeing the timid child that was Annabelle, they adopted her on the spot. She became the youngest of the three children, and she faced an uphill battle.

Her years of being kept at home to hide her injuries left her at a severe disadvantage to children her own age. Her parents paid for a tutor to teach her, and she soon caught up and exceeded what she needed. A naturally bright child, she was soon studying with her brother and sister to learn more. At age 12, she was brought to El Universidad de Excelsior, a university in Mexico City that had recently begun an advanced primary program. While at the university, she learned circuitry and the physics of modern computer science, and by the time she graduated, she held the equivalent of an associate's degree in Electrical Technology.

While this was happening, her parents helped her overcome the years of abuse and neglect that had taken their toll. She didn't begin school immediately, instead being slowly shown that the world was not out to hurt her. Therapists worked to help her to overcome the nightmares, while her new parents cared for her. She learned to assert herself, be self confident, and become a fairly normal girl. The nightmares sometimes still plague her when she's stressed, but most of the emotional scars have faded.

When she turned 18, she decided to follow her father's example and join Starfleet. She feels that it gives her a chance to help people who need it, as well as give back for all the great people who helped her over the years. She was also hoping that by joining the Fleet, she would be able to live on her own and find out if there were any lingering scars that might remain. The fear that she is broken is perhaps her greatest, private fear.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The loss of El Chupacabra, or "Chupa", her stuffed lizard. Before she was rescued, Chupa was the only thing that kept her mostly sane. One night, her father was drinking, and he grabbed Chupa from her arms and said she needed to grow up. She began crying and grabbing for him, and her father, in a fit of rage, threw the lizard out the window. She became hysterical, and he beat her to make her shut up. He threw her in her room and slammed the door. She found Chupa again, but never carried him around her father again.
Best Time: Graduation from El Universidad de Excelsior, one of the premiere primary schools in Mexico. Her family had all been there, even her older brother and sister, and they'd gone out and celebrated. Her father had carried her on his back for the first time in years, carrying her around in her black graduation robes as they went around on their celebration, ending the night watching a spectacular fireworks display over the city center.
Most Crucial Experience: The years of love and help she received. Without a loving family that adopted her and helped her get the help she needed, she would have probably ended up in a mental ward or committed suicide. From her father's gentle strength to her mother's endless patience, to her older sister's always being there to help and teach her, and her older brother's lovingly annoying over protectiveness of his little sister.
Role Model: The best role model would have to be Abby's father. For the first years after she was adopted, she would often awaken in the middle of the night, crying from nightmares. He would hold her and stroke her hair until she went back to sleep. His gentle strength, of always being there, helped her in the darkest days. He never complained, and would help anyone who sought help. She promised him before she left that she would make him proud of his little galleta (cookie).
