The brain is an organ of soft nervous tissue, contained in the skull of vertebrates called the cranium, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity. The brain is the part of the body which lets animals make sense of things. It gets input from sense organs, and changes behavior in response to this information. In humanoids, the brain controls use of language, and is capable of abstract thought. The brain is the main control center of the whole body. It is also the conduit for consciousness, subconscious, thought, memory, emotion, and the ability to dream and the powers of extrasensory perception by way of psionic energy.

Parts of a brain include:

  • brain stem - stalk-like part of the brain that connects the cerebrum with the spinal cord
  • cerebral cortex - the outer layer of neural tissue of the cerebrum of the brain in humans and other mammals
  • corpus callosum - only found in placental mammals, connecting the left and right cerebral hemispheres, enabling communication between them
  • ganglia - act as relay stations, allowing nerves to enter and leave simultaneously all the time
  • medulla oblongata - responsible for involuntary functions, such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and the sleep-wake cycle
  • speech center - allows a person to both understand and speak

Breen and Ferengi have a four lobed brain structure, which cannot be read by telepathic species.
Many cultures purposely alter their perceptions of reality for spiritual or recreational reasons.

Other types of brains discovered/invented are the

  • Hive mind, like in the Borg, is also known as a collective consciousness, or group consciousness, and links multiple minds into a unified whole, sacrificing individuality.

  • Microbrain was the name given to an inorganic, intelligent silicon-based lifeform on the planet Velara III.

  • Positronic brain, such as one found in androids, are extremely sophisticated computation devices, and are capable of artificial sentience.
Created by Dr. Noonian Soong, this brain-like device consists of an artificial neural network, designed to imitate the humanoid brain.
