Personal History

Samantha grew up on her parent’s ranch in Pineville, North Carolina. She competed in horse tournaments when she was young, but slowly stopped competing when she discovered her love for science. Samantha had always been a curious child, so when she started asking for beakers and test tubes instead of a new saddle or riding boots, her parents knew that she was branching away from simple ranch life. Her previous lifestyle became more of a hobby as the girl hid herself away to study medical terms, starting to care for the farm’s animals in more of a medical sense as her knowledge grew.

Early on in her scientific studies, Samantha had wanted to be a veterinarian. It made sense, since she grew up with a love for both animals and science. However, as she grew into and past puberty, Samantha developed her Betazoid abilities along with a strong motherly sense; a dangerous and effective combination for one who is on the path to becoming doctor or nurse. While in her transition from girl to woman, she slowly went from nursing stray animals back to health to studying human biology at the local university. Her medical knowledge combined with her Betazoid abilities made her a competent nurse, and her drive brought her into Med School. This path eventually led her to Starfleet Medical, where she was stationed for a handful of years before transferring to the starship USS Ticonderoga.

Samantha’s first mission on the Ticonderoga was riddled with injured and emergency trauma. Being more of a routine-practicing doctor, it only took one mission for “Fritzy” to start questioning her position on a vessel. However, she had also found a fellow Betazoid, Corin Laer, and with him, a soon-to-be good friend. Another newfound relationship was also started with the ship’s CO, and though she was wary of it, they became romantically involved. While Samantha struggled to adapt to life on a starship, her relationships struggled as well. Her fast friendship with Doctor Laer was fading, and her intimacy with Commodore Braggins was feeling more forced as the man refused commitment. It was slowly becoming clear that Sam was not fit for life in space, and if she was, it certainly wasn’t aboard the Ticonderoga.

When the Ticonderoga stopped for Shore Leave and the Senior Staff were called away for a secret Away Mission, Sam headed home for her sister’s wedding. With her sister being younger than her, Samantha Rae had to face all her relatives and their pity as they learned that she was starting to become an “Old Maid” in Betazoid culture. She discussed with her parents their thoughts of moving from Earth to Betazed for the remainder of their lives, but was relieved to hear that the family farm in North Carolina was to be put into her name. She tried to ignore her parents’ reasoning: that her sister would already have a place of her own since she was married and starting a family, and therefor would not “need” the farm as Samantha would, being alone with no prospects. After returning to the Ticonderoga, Sam found a gift from her sister inside her luggage: the Betazed equivalent of the symbolic bouquet of flowers- the “wedding hair band” worn by the bride. Her sister included this gift as a symbol to show Samantha that her time would come, even if their parents were starting to doubt so. It was a symbol of hope to the older sister, a message from Lee-Ann that she still believed in whatever it was Samantha wanted to do with her life.

Soon after unfortunately, Samantha decided that she had been right to doubt her transfer orders from Starfleet Medical on Earth to a Starship. Her relationship with Commanding Officer Paul Braggins was failing, and the life of a starship officer was truly grating on her. She sent Braggins a Dear John letter and requested a transfer back to Earth, taking command of her family’s farm, and a nearby Starfleet Medical station. With no contact from any of her previous co-workers (including ex Paul Braggins), going back to life in North Carolina was both smooth and jolting for the young doctor. It was as if she never left, but she had now gotten a taste of starship life, and it crept up on her. Though she felt no disrespect for the job, she was beginning to bore of broken arms and house calls. Her favorite moments became when she was able to ride her horse Belle, and stargaze in the middle of her farm’s few acres of land. She tried to remind herself of how hard life in space had been, and if anything, her assignment on the Tico had been but a learning experience.

With war starting to break out between the Federation and the Krynar, Starfleet all but begged capable medical personnel to serve aboard starships. Pressure began to build for Samantha to leave command of her little post in the Southern United States, but she was steadfast in her belief that she belonged planetside. After the brass was through begging people, orders began to ship out, and paperwork of that kind was soon sitting on Dr. Fritz’s desk. With promise from Starfleet that her home and practice would still stand when she got back, Fritzy accepted the posting. Starfleet made sure that Samantha was posted on a ship much like the one she had been before, this time the USS Dauntless.

Though the design of the Dauntless mirrored that of the Ticonderoga, Samantha found few other things similar. A Klingon was in charge, not her lover, and she was not treating simple ship's plasma burns. A simple mission curdled in the heart of Sickbay; while the crew raced to find a kidnapped Captain, Fritzy raced to find the cure of a deadly disease that was spreading throughout the ship. She was able to complete research on what she found was called the Rigellian Hydro-Flu, but could not find anything resembling a cure. It was a genetically-engineered weapon that so far could be controlled by isolating the cases and, to Fritzy's dismay, letting them die. Failing to save the victims was coupled with a promotion by Starfleet in what Samantha saw as a cruel joke, and she was instated as a full Lieutenant when the Dauntless crew finally recovered Captain Torgh. Her first act as official Chief Medical Officer was to sign the death notices resulting from the deadly virus.

After Torgh's kidnapping and rescue, a select number of the crew set out to seek what was explicitly “not revenge.” Fritzy's duty, along with her nurse and the Science officers, was to develop a “back-up plan” in case Torgh and the Away Team's mission was partly unsuccessful. This resulted in the CMO yet again doubting herself as a medical professional, as their solution had been to develop controllable biological weapons. Though the physical weapons were lost when the classified ship Apparition was destroyed, the files had already been on their way to Starfleet. When most of the ship's complement were lost, Fritzy again wondered how she was going to word the death notices. Returned to the nearest Starbase, Fritz immediately went to work in their Sickbay, trying to heal as many sick as she could, and atone for her wrongdoings on-board the Apparition.
