Personal History

Childhood and Life Before Star Fleet

Emily 'Em' Fitchel, the youngest child and only daughter of Lee and Mary Fitchel, was born in the New Jamestown colony on Alpha Proxima II. Her childhood was for the most part normal – full of love and a healthy emphasis on academics by her two university professor parents. However, two things about her early life stood out and subsequently shaped the path she would follow as an adult. First, as an infant and small child, she developed a very close bond with her second oldest brother, Ken, to the point where she would follow him around and imitate his habits and mannerisms as best she could. This relationship was dealt a serious blow when Ken left her and the rest of the family behind for reasons unbeknownst to all of them (See Star Fleet Bio of Kenneth Fitchel for details). At the time, she did not understand why he left, but still continued to love him even as she felt abandoned by him.

The second thing that would come to play a significant role in Em's life was music. Early on, she showed a considerable talent in playing and musical composition which was nurtured by lessons which she quickly progressed beyond when her abilities were shown to be greater than that of her instructors. Her instincts allowed her to pick up and master a variety of instruments and play them in whatever genre struck her fancy at the moment. Throughout her childhood and teenage years, she won numerous awards and competitions in music. In high school, she excelled in the life sciences and graduated with honors – winning a full scholarship to the prestigious Ellington School of Music on Earth to study music theory and composition.

Life at the Ellington School proved to be less than ideal for the restless teenage girl. Em soon found that the formal study of music was robbing her of the joy she felt from playing. Instead of focusing on her studies, she would frequently go out all night to play in jazz clubs and dive bars – arriving home in time to spend the day sleeping through her classes. Finally, teetering on the brink of being academically dismissed, she took the preemptive step of dropping out. After leaving the Ellington School, she fell into a state of mild disillusionment and began searching for a new direction in her life.

Inspired by a renewed relationship with her brother Ken and seeing the success he was having as a Star Fleet officer, Em decided to apply to Star Fleet Academy. Through her brother, she obtained an interview with his Commanding Officer, Commodore Kinziri Jal, with the purpose of securing her endorsement and sponsorship in the application process. The interview was tough and Commodore Jal was reluctant to sponsor the young woman given her track record of not following through on things. However, the endorsement was finally secured based on Ken's reputation as an up and comer under Jal's command and Em was accepted and entered as a Cadet.

Star Fleet Academy

After her initial psychological and aptitude screening, Em was assigned as a Science Cadet with a specialty in life sciences and chemistry. During her first year while undergoing her required training in shuttle and small craft piloting, it was determined that she possessed exceptional instincts and abilities with regard to flying and she was reassigned as a Tactical Cadet. In addition to her regular Tactical officer course work, she was given additional advanced training in piloting and joined the Academy Precision Flight Team in her second year. Her other extracurricular activities included taking up racquet ball and playing in the Cadet Jazz band as her love of music was once again rekindled.

During her third year, she received the honor of being chosen for the annual Cadet slot for the Star Fleet Basic Fighter Pilot Course and was temporarily reassigned to the Aviation Training School on Jupiter's moon of Ganymede. Em began her training and quickly excelled in piloting all of the standard fighter craft in the Star Fleet arsenal. However, when she was a few weeks shy of graduation from the course and on a routine combat training exercise flying the A-1 attack aircraft, her ship developed an engine overload after a stall maneuver and exploded. She managed to eject and beam to safety, but her assigned weapons officer, Ensign Francis Hartmann, was not so lucky and died due to a malfunction of the ejector subsystem.

An inquiry was held into the cause of the accident. In spite of overwhelming evidence of both mechanical failure of the craft and Ensign Hartmann's less than stellar academic and flying record in the school being the primary contributing factors leading to his death, the review board determined that pilot error was what led to the accident. Em was dismissed from the course and returned to the Academy. During the next several months, the accident was subjected to further scrutiny and after considerable pressure from the dead Ensign's father, Admiral Jack Hartmann, she was further disciplined and made to repeat her third year. Additionally, she was banned from all flight activities not related to her training as a Tactical officer. In spite of the residual bitterness she felt as a result of her battles with the entrenched Hartmann dynasty within Star Fleet, she continued to excel in her course work and graduated in the top 10% of her class at the tail end of the Second Romulan War – albeit with no recognition for doing so since she had had to repeat a year.

Star Base Alpha

While most of her class was assigned to front line ships and facilities in the continuing war against the Romulan Star Empire, Em was given the less than glamorous assignment of non-combat flight operations on Star Base Alpha. During her tour of duty there, she was assigned as an intra-system shuttle pilot doing the daily supply run between the numerous Star Fleet facilities in the Sol System. Because of what she felt was a continuing pattern of unfair treatment due to the accident, she constantly clashed with her immediate superiors and brought unwanted unfavorable attention from Star Base Alpha's Chief Tactical Officer, Commander Wallace Brubaker, with her frequent requests for transfer to a ship or border facility. Because of her disciplinary problems, her promotion to Ensign took twice as long as normal.

Finally, after much cajoling on her part and with some string pulling on the part of her brother, Ken, Em got her long desired transfer – being assigned to the USS Yeager. With this new opportunity before her, she is determined to get her career back on track and redeem herself in the eyes of the powers that be.
