Personal History

Cristina, or Crissy as she prefers, grew up on Earth amongst her extended family. The Fiore clan settled in Chicago in the early 2100s and have remained there ever since, so Crissy was never short of company.

Speed and the thrill of flight were Crissy’s biggest passions as she grew up. She was a very competitive child, racing her friends on bicycles and subsequently karts and bikes as she got older. It was a Starfleet flight display that really caught her eye and convinced her that’s where her future lay one day.

Officially, nothing happened thereafter. From the moment of that display at the age of 12 Crissy dedicated herself to joining Starfleet. What actually happened was somewhat less salubrious.

As a teenager Crissy rebelled against the strict upbringing and claustrophobic family life she experienced. She had five siblings, her mother was one of nine and her father was one of six. Everywhere she went there were family. It was impossible to avoid them, so she went further and further underground to escape.

The second life she descended into was straight out of the worst tales of the 20th century. Hanging around in a seedy bar Crissy’s life revolved around music, drink and drugs. She all but disappeared from the ‘real’ world for weeks at a time, escaping into a world of hedonism totally divorced from everything she knew before.

Crissy’s disappearances drove her family to despair, until eventually one of her uncles tracked her down. His Starfleet connections meant that her name was kept off any records of the raid on the bar the next night.

The bedraggled, emaciated mess that was dragged semi-conscious into the back of a Security transport bore little resemblance to Cristina Fiore. It took her family weeks to get her back into a fit state to finish her education and she fought them the whole way. Eventually her father got through to her over a rebuilt muscle car, and she still keeps the 1969 Dodge Charger which was put back together about the same time her life was.

It took a lot of hard work but Crissy pulled herself back from the precipice. With temptation just a few blocks away, she had to develop near-Vulcan levels of self discipline to do well enough to get into the Academy, in the end comfortably meeting the academic requirements and taking to the Starfleet life like she was born to it.

Midshipman Fiore became the first of her family to become a Starfleet Officer when she finally graduated, and the entire clan turned out for the ceremony. It was the final act of redemption for her, as branches of the clan that hadn’t spoken for years sat next to each other without so much as a raised word to mark the occasion.

Early career

Crissy’s early career saw her take in a variety of unglamorous assignments around Bajor. To blow off steam during down time, she let her hair down by racing custom shuttle-craft and salvaged fighters. She earned a reputation as an outrageously skilled pilot but never tasted combat.

Having showed just enough potential to rise to Lieutenant, Crissy became Chief Tactical Officer on board the USS Aldrin, jumping at the chance to take an assignment where something might happen. And something did, much more than she could have been expecting.

The scout ship was on a mission on the edge of Romulan space when it was attacked and badly damaged by enemy vessels that the Columbus-class didn’t even see coming. The ship’s Bridge was destroyed leaving Lt Fiore as the senior surviving officer and she rose to the challenge. Crissy took command and managed to hold ship and crew together long enough to limp back to the nearest Starbase. She never so much as flinched, remaining eerily calm as the Aldrin slipped past patrols and evaded pursuers, her coolness under fire permeating through to the rest of the crew. She was nicknamed ‘Crissy Ice’ on the ship’s safe return, a nickname that has stuck with her ever since.

Fiore was made a Lieutenant Commander in recognition of her achievement, and she took up the Chief Tactical Officer role on the Aldrin. When the CTO job came up on the Ticonderoga, Crissy jumped at the chance for such a prestigious assignment. It was a struggle to leave the Columbus-class, but on seeing the heavy cruiser USS Ticonderoga for the first time she felt the familiar thrill of adrenaline at the prospect of controlling such a vessel.

Assignment: USS Ticonderoga CA-1471 ”Sunrise Over Carraya”

Crissy’s first mission on the Ticonderoga saw the vessel take part in a battle with the Klingon Empire in the Carraya system. Prior to the fleets engaging, the Klingons used some unknown technology to jam the Starfleet vessels. The Ticonderoga was effectively blinded, its weapons rendered useless as cybernetically enhanced Klingons boarded the vessel.

Crissy found herself with a Security team, tasked with securing the auxiliary bridge. The Klingons were waiting and of the 11 Starfleet officers that went into the fight, only 4 survived. Crissy herself had several ribs broken as she found herself one-on-one with an attacker, and was milliseconds away from being gutted by a bat’leth until a Security crew member intervened.

The experience shook Crissy to the core. Up until that point she had never seen that side of combat. Starship battles were conducted from the remote safety of the Bridge. There was always the risk of death but it had never before been brought home to her in such graphic fashion that her death could be violent, gruesome and essentially meaningless.

Special Operations Command – Recruitment

On returning to Starbase Delta from Carraya an immediate transfer to the USS Sheridan followed for Crissy. Rattled, she broke a 5 year vow and cracked open a bottle of vodka. What followed was a week of drinking and recklessness that should have ruined her career. She turned up to a formal dinner drunk, and skipped out on the mandatory after-party for a one-woman bar crawl. Worst of all was when she caught on with a group of rogue pilots on Bandar, a short journey from the Starbase, and took part in races through the middle of a bustling metropolis at breakneck speeds.

It took Commodore Braggins, one of the best pilots in Starfleet and Crissy’s CO on the Ticonderoga, to finally bring her down after a pursuit through Bandar City and abandoned mine workings out in the planet’s deserts. It was only when she was sat next to the burning remnants of her custom-built ship that it hit Crissy just what she had done, and how close she had come to a truly futile death borne from her own stupidity.

Braggins offered the wayward Fiore a second chance. He would ensure the matter never reached a court martial, preserving Crissy’s career and freedom, and take her back to the Ticonderoga. Consequences would have to follow but she would still be in Starfleet and have the opportunity to put the madness behind her. In exchange, she would sign on for a task force that operated between missions against the pirates and raiders that were still to be completely neutralised within the Federation’s borders.

Without a moment’s hesitation a remorseful Fiore accepted the Commodore’s terms. She was devastated at how close she had come to plumbing the depths of her teenage years, and promised with all her heart to make the best of the second chance she had been given.

Granted a reprieve, Crissy was put through her paces by the Starfleet Special Operations Command on Andoria. It was tough but she persevered, driven on by a need to atone for her past mistakes. The instructors refined her piloting skills, taught her how to use advanced weaponry and cutting-edge craft, and also drilled her in squadron command.

Assessments followed after the most intensive two weeks of her life. She was tasked with hunting down an F-1 interceptor in an XF-1 Venator, and after being led on a merry dance through the major shipping lanes around Andoria Crissy brought down her quarry over the planet’s southern polar region. The snow and ice was to become only too familiar in a six-hour ordeal under the title of ‘escape and evasion’, and she was unceremoniously hauled out of bed in the small hours and systematically abused and terrified to ensure she could withstand interrogation.

One of the harder tests followed. Coming to after being drugged, Fiore found herself in the middle of a jungle and told to eliminate a ‘resistance fighter’ who was trying to flee captivity. This was the assessment to see if she was capable of killing. The notion had caused her all kinds of problems and nearly cost her here, as she couldn’t pull the trigger the first time she had a shot. At the next opportunity she put a phaser bolt through the back of the man’s head, and had never been so utterly relieved to hear the words ‘end program’. The holo-simulation had been fantastically real right down to the last detail and until the order was given, Crissy had no idea if the situation was real or not.

After acing the marksmanship tests Crissy was given a working over by SOCOM’s top martial arts instructor known as Doctore. A bloodied Fiore survived the bout, staying upright for the full assessment. Dragging herself to a briefing room she was told that she had managed to pass the course, and was inducted into the Special Forces division alongside her ‘day job’.

As she left, Doctore took her to one side. The huge dark-skinned figure had been watching her closely and had done some homework on her. He had seen her like before and the pep talk he gave Crissy really hit home. The El-Aurian recognised the self-destructive streak that surfaced after long periods of introspection. He told her that she needed the SOCOM missions to keep her mind focussed. If she could do that then there was no limit to what she could achieve. But if she kept letting herself go then the consequences would be dire.

Assignment: USS Ticonderoga CA-1471 ”Revolution”

Crissy returned to the Ticonderoga with Doctore’s words still ringing in her ears. A new CTO had already been assigned so Fiore returned as Strategic Operations Officer. It was a new position and one she wasn’t used to, but she set about doing what she could when the Ticonderoga was dispatched to deal with possible secessionists on Yadalla Prime.

She clashed with the FO Tokat, with the inevitable result of Braggins having to intervene to reassert Tokat’s authority and Crissy leaving the Away Team. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When diplomacy failed Yadallan government vessels, supported by a Romulan dreadnought, attacked the Ticonderoga and blew off the port nacelle. Fiore was at the helm as the heavy cruiser spun towards the nearby moon in a death spiral. Miraculously she brought the ship under control and took it back into the fight, when by rights it should have been a smashed hulk on the lunar surface.

That wasn’t the end of the mission. Ordered to accompany Braggins, Crissy finally tasted combat as a fighter pilot. She performed way beyond anyone’s expectations. She flew right alongside Paul around Yadalla’s moon, over craters and through ravines whilst taking heavy orbital fire. Once the CO had destroyed the shield generator the squadron had been sent to eliminate, Crissy joined the fight and rushed to the defence of the USS Dauntless which was taking a battering from the Romulan fleet. The impact of her intervention was telling as she shot down incoming torpedoes before launching a devastating barrage of her own straight down the Kerchan class vessel’s throat, causing the critical hit that blew the vessel into its constituent atoms.

SOCOM Calls

On arrival back to Starbase Bravo Crissy didn’t have time to get comfortable before she was called upon by SOCOM. She took command of the Kasserine Pass, a converted freighter serving as a q-ship that was to engage raiders taking advantage of the fact that Starfleet’s attention was elsewhere.

Fiore set a classic ambush which the overconfident privateers flew straight into. As their fighters attacked the Kasserine Pass, they left a clear run on their own ship that Crissy took from her Venator. She blasted the carrier into its constituent atoms with tactical nuclear warheads, leaving the fighters homeless and with no option but to flee. It was a particularly well-executed example of anti-pirate operations.

On her return to Starbase Bravo, Crissy was abducted by a man hired by the Orion cartel who had owned the carrier she destroyed. The ruling family had members on board the carrier at the time and they sought vengeance. Crissy was rescued by her former CO Alanna Treborn, now a Starfleet Intelligence operative who was hunting the abductor. Literally the next day she was able to square the debt - Treborn needed a pilot for a dangerous retrieval mission and with no hesitation Crissy took the assignment, extracting Alanna from a half-ruined city whilst under heavy fire.

SOCOM wasted no time putting their newest asset straight back into play. Crissy shipped out with a squadron of Marine pilots pulled together to engage an Orion cartel that was trying to expand its sphere of influence. She personally destroyed 17 enemy craft including a frigate, carrying out pinpoint strikes on its engines to disable it and then blowing it to pieces by targeting its weapons.

Assignment: USS Chin’toka CA-1375 Theft of the Chin’toka

When Crissy returned to Starbase Bravo, there was a new assignment waiting for her. She was ordered to Starbase Delta and the 4th Fleet. The newly-commissioned USS Chin’toka needed a Chief Tactical Officer and Crissy was it, serving under Captain Yvette. She was routed via Earth and had the honour of piloting the ship on her maiden voyage across to Starbase Delta.

On arrival the Chin’toka played host to a full-on party for members of the 4th Fleet, which was ended abruptly by a drill simulating an attack from the powerful Krynar.

Unbeknownst to anyone, a team was in the process of hijacking the Chin’toka and literally stole the ship out from under the Starfleeters with several officers, the CTO included, still aboard. Crissy was the first to smell a rat when instruments reported an attack whilst every instinct in the career pilot’s body was telling her that the ship had gone to warp. Unfortunately she was completely unable to do anything about it, as the assembled COs had been keeping up the pretence of a drill before disappearing completely.

Crissy went on to try and retake the ship but paid a heavy price. One of the hijackers knocked her back out of alignment and left her in such excruciating agony she had to receive extensive treatment before being able to continue.

Moments later Crissy was pitched down a Jeffries tube when the hijackers split the ship, falling 20 feet onto a deck plate. Her knee was smashed up when she landed on a rifle and a spare ammunition pack was embedded deep into her side. Held together with duct tape and painkillers, Crissy carried on up to the Bridge anyway. It was a display of grit and toughness that set out just how difficult she was to stop.

On the Bridge she met up with Tyra Crawford and teams from the Pegasus who had recaptured the area. Crissy diffused a stand-off as the two groups of Starfleet personnel had to be convinced of each other’s identity, and then finally she let herself be treated as the Chin’toka returned to Starbase.

Assignment: USS Chin’toka CA-1375 ”Prime Defective”

Whilst a large away team was sent to infiltrate and learn about the Staarac, a civilisation that had apparently jumped to warp ready since the last Starfleet survey in the area and attacked a Starfleet frigate, Crissy was left on board Chin’toka.

The Staarac had a critical vulnerability to active sensors, the patterns disrupting their warp core containment and blowing their ships to pieces. Running a scan the CTO inadvertently found this vulnerability and triggered the catastrophic side-effect. Captain Yvette put her in a shuttle and sent her out to gain nebula samples.

There was no time to dwell on what happened with the Staarac ship – the Krynar invaded the Stoorc system and the Chin’toka was forced to flee. Crissy duelled with Krynar shard ships before warping the shuttle away, becoming the only pilot to have engaged the fearsome new enemy and lived to tell the tale.

Assignment: USS Chin’toka CA-1375 ”Enemy of my Enemy”

When the Chin’toka was sent to patrol an area of space and made the fateful decision to investigate a mysterious carrier wave, it set into motion a chain of events that would redefine a lot of careers.

Entering the nebula around the Mericor system the Chin’toka found the source of the wave to be Borg. Thought extinct for years, an offshoot of the collective had used the magnetic interference in the area to hide away.

The collective assimilated LCdr Brodie Codey, the acting FO and the man who Crissy had been having a passionate relationship with since the end of the Staarac mission. They used him as their mouthpiece and Crissy found she couldn’t separate the drone from the man.

Appointed acting FO in Brodie’s place, Crissy clashed with Captain Yvette the entire mission. The pilot wanted them to fight their way clear and escape, coming back with sufficient force to take on the Borg. At the time they didn’t know how many Borg vessels were present – Crissy was more than confident she could destroy the one probe vessel between them and deep space, but Yvette overruled her and took the Chin’toka into orbit. The Captain silenced her acting FO during extremely tense negotiations, but froze when the Borg beamed drones over and Crissy had to rely on her gun arm to take the drones out and her own tenacity to start the fightback.

When the Krynar appeared Yvette entered into a pact with the Borg to join forces against the new enemy. It meant handing over the vessel for assimilation and right along with it, some of the crew. In a twist that Crissy found absolutely abhorrent, she was on the list of officers demanded by the Borg. She tried to fight but it was utterly futile, and the Chin’toka’s CTO was turned into drone 21 of 812.

Being assimilated was every bit the living hell that Fiore dreaded. She was held prisoner in her own body, completely unable to fight back as the collective downloaded her skills and experiences to use against the Krynar.

Under the control of 21 of 812, the drone’s hand removed and replaced with an interface jack, the heavily modified Chin’toka engaged the Krynar. The battle was brutal and the Starfleet vessel was nearly totally destroyed, but the Krynar were wiped out. Having a pilot and weapons officer as outrageously skilled as Fiore made the difference in the end. The raw flood of data and the total control over the vessel meant the small part of her that was still Crissy went along for the ride, the inner thrillseeker getting carried along. This is something that still makes her sick to her stomach even now.

The Borg attempted to renege on the pact they’d made, using the state of the Chin’toka as a justification for complete assimilation, but both Brodie and Crissy broke through long enough to keep them honest.

The collective cut the assimilated Starfleet crew loose the moment the Chin’toka was space-worthy. Dumped with the heavy implant still part of her and her bloodstream still cluttered with nanoprobes, Crissy was in surgery for hours. She declined to have a prosthetic hand fitted and struggled on with just one until the replacement was cloned.

Aftermath of Mericor

Assimilation devastated Crissy. The feeling of complete violation from the Borg, the betrayal from Yvette in handing her over, and of feeling used and cast aside by both shook her to her core. She shut herself away and fought against anyone who tried to help her.

The Chin’toka’s Counsellor Colm Tanic was the only one who managed to get her to talk and it took every ounce of his professional persistence and skills to break through. She pulled herself together just enough to undertake a series of missions for SOCOM, taking out all the anger and grief on the Orion raiders that fell into her sights.

Crissy reached out to Brodie so they could help each other recover, but he either pushed her away or ignored her. It strained the relationship to breaking point, and although they had a reconciliation they still weren’t entirely the same.

Assignment: USS Chin’toka CA-1375 ”Duogravitics”

When the recall notice came out to return to Chin’toka, Crissy refused the order. She still believed that Yvette was in command and swore on her life that she would never serve with the Halanan again.

It turned out Yvette had returned to Earth and the new CO was Captain Gagarin, known to a lot of the crew already. When she found that out Crissy returned to Chin’toka and took her position up again.

The mission this time was to test a new weapon that had been developed to give Starfleet a fighting chance against the Krynar. The weapon had, to put it mildly, some side-effects. It created such acute nausea the entire Bridge crew were disabled at one point, and neutralised gravity within the ship to the point that Crissy’s knee was dislocated by a falling member of her own staff.

With her leg still hanging off at a sickening angle, a Romulan vessel was unmasked as it had tried to watch the test being carried out. Maddened by pain Crissy tried to take the entire battle onto her own shoulders, at one point going so far as to lock the FO out of a weapons console. When the enemy vessel got away anyway the CTO took it badly.

Instead of helping, the medical officer assigned slammed her knee back into its socket without painkillers and then caused agonising cramps with a dermal regenerator on the wrong setting.

For the first time in her career Crissy lost her temper on the Bridge and stormed off to heal herself. When Brodie came after her the row was explosive and vicious, neither holding back in their criticisms of the other. The relationship was on the edge, and they’ve barely spoken since.

Both were professional enough to complete the mission and carry out the tests on the devastating weapon, Crissy working with the other departments to find the optimal safe settings.

After the mission Crissy was faced with the stark fact that she still wasn’t right after Mericor. She had fallen into a vicious circle – with her off-duty confidence shattered, she couldn’t bring herself to venture out, and because she never emerged or engaged with anyone they didn’t know her well enough to bring her out.

Her cousin Michael Fiore and old friend Anne Leigh Wozcienski arrived as the Chin’toka docked at Starbase Delta, and their intervention was perfectly timed. Anne forced Crissy to confront her demons, telling her in no uncertain terms to pull her head out of her own backside and move past what had happened. The only thing holding Crissy back was Crissy, and the realisation on a bar crawl with her closest friend was a welcome shot in the arm.

Later Years

Unfortunately Crissy never recovered from her assimilation ordeal, suffering from acute PTSD that she hid from everyone until the reappearance of Captain Yvette before the final battle with the Krynar. She completely lost her cool, pulling a gun on the Captain. Codey and Wozcienski had no option but to have her arrested and escorted from the Bridge.

There was no saving her Star Fleet career. In light of her achievements, central of which was the piece of programming that rolled out the final version of the gravitic weapons to the fleet, she was granted an honourable discharge on medical grounds.

From there Crissy ended up on professional racing circuits. Her phenomenal piloting skill had survived and she absolutely dominated for two and a half seasons. She had been one of the best pilots ever through Star Fleet’s doors, and she was just too good for any civilian.

Despite her success, rumours flew surrounding her and it was commonly believed she had succumbed to her old ways. If she wasn’t flying then she was insensible through drink, drugs or both, although her team always denied it and her performances were never anything less than faultless. She became more and more erratic in media appearances and distant from friends and family.

On the verge of clinching a 3rd straight championship, Crissy’s ship exploded on re-entry during the iconic Monaco race on Earth and she died instantly. It was recorded as a freak accident but there were persistent whispers that she had destroyed the ship herself to escape her demons.

She was buried with full honours in her hometown of Chicago.

Academy Minor(s): Auxillary Vessel Piloting, Field Engineering, Ship-Board Weaponry.
Hobbies and Pastimes: Racing sims, soccer, rock music and vehicle customisation.
Short-Term Goals: Totally banish the ghosts of Mericor.
Long-Term Goals: Hit the Command path. Crissy has been given tastes of Command, on the Kasserine Pass and the USS James Madison, and she wants more.
Personality: Crissy is calmness personified when she's on duty, only allowing the inner extrovert out when she's away from the Bridge. But buried deep deep down is an inner hedonist that surfaces when she is left to her own devices. This side of her has only surfaced twice, but on both occasions it nearly ruined her life. Crissy has vowed never to let it happen again.
Sense of Humor: Waspish -- Crissy loves sharp one-liners and is only too happy to come out with them herself.
Phobias: None, although is decidedly uncomfortable around lizards for reasons she's never been able to fathom.
Likes: Speed, thrills, good food and good company.
Dislikes: Being alone, or being forced out of her comfort zone for long periods.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Officiousness, overbearing senior officers.
Bad Habits or Vices: Retreating into her shell when her train-crash of a personal life catches up with her. Drinking to excess. Allowing her heart to rule her head.
Achievements: Gaining her pilot's licence at 14, graduating the Academy, getting promoted to Lieutenant Commander and later being inducted into the Special Forces Division.
Disappointments: Never really had a chance to show what she can do since the events on the USS Aldrin. The relapse over Bandar that by rights should have cost her her career.

Strengths: Almost eerily cool under pressure, extremely adept at solving problems, a truly outstanding pilot and genuine crack shot.
Weaknesses: Can struggle to rise above personal issues sometimes to put the "bigger picture" first.
Fears: Flaming out and staying at the same rank in the same place for the rest of her career.
Prejudices: Can be dismissive of those who don't, in her view, seem to want to better themselves.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Jeans, t-shirts and either combat boots or hi-top sneakers. Refuses to wear a skirt under any circumstances.
Distinguishing Features: Always carries her black SOCOM-issue type II phaser in a concealed holster. Crissy has all requisite licences and permits for the weapon and is legally allowed to have it anywhere she's permitted to be.
Pets: None.
Friends: Anne Leigh Wozcienski. The two were roommates at the Academy and became firm friends. After hearing of Crissy’s ordeal at the hands of the Borg Anne transferred to Chin’toka to stand by her friend.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Being assimilated by the Borg. Crissy is such a strong personality and free spirit that having that crushed and being reduced to a mindless automaton was her personal hell. A year later she’s still fighting demons from the experience and it’s no given that she’ll ever completely get over it.
Best Time: Her Academy graduation ceremony. Her entire family turned out to see her become a fully-fledged Starfleet officer. It meant a lot to her to see such a huge Fiore gathering without anyone digging up old vendettas.
Most Crucial Experience: Having to take command of the USS Aldrin. Prior to that she hadn’t really considered herself to be a leader, but she really thrived on having others look to her for direction. Since then she has worked tirelessly to prepare herself for a Command role, and really hopes to make it some day soon.
Role Model: Crissy served briefly with Alanna Treborn when the senior officer was at the peak of her powers, and the two crossed paths again on Starbase Bravo. Crissy aspires to reach the heights that Alanna did, and someday command the genuine loyalty, respect and united spirit that Treborn instilled in those she served with.
