The term Federation-Klingon War can refer to one of many:

Federation-Klingon Cold War

Starting in 2223, the Cold War lasted almost seventy years.

The Federation-Klingon Cold War escalated around 2223, directly after the Klingon moon Praxis was destroyed.

  • In 2245, one of the most noted battles was the Battle of Donatu V in the area of Sherman's Planet. The results of that battle were considered inconclusive.

  • Tensions continued when Klingons issued an ultimatum to the Federation, telling them to withdraw from their disputed areas.
The Federation responded with a blockade of the Klingon territory.
The Klingons, believing themselves to be stronger, responded by invading Federation territories.

This war was mentioned only exclusively in Star Trek: Discovery

This series has not been declared as cannon on Federation Space.

Federation-Klingon War (2267)

Klingons occupying Organia

The result of years of tense build-up in a cold war situation, this war was ultimately inconclusive, because the fighting was abruptly ended by the Organians.

End of Cold War

Ongoing negotiations between the Federation and the Klingons were in danger of breaking down, and open warfare was becoming a likelihood. Starfleet Command expected that the Klingons would launch a surprise attack, after they issued an ultimatum demanding that the Federation withdraw from all disputed regions along their mutual border. When the Federation refused the demands, the Klingons launched an immediate attack, even before an official declaration of war was issued.

Occupation of Organia

When the Federation flagship USS Enterprise received notice of the declaration of war, it was ordered to the planet Organia, which occupied a strategic location in disputed space, which was now on the front lines of war. Captain Kirk's orders were to prevent the Klingons from occupying the planet, and using it as a base. At the time, the Organians were believed to be a simple, pre-warp agrarian society. Kirk and his First Officer Spock beamed down and offered the Organian Council of Elders assistance in defending against the impending Klingon attack. The Organians refused.

Minutes later, the Klingons invaded, forcing the Enterprise away from the planet, forcing them to leave their Captain and First Officer stranded on the surface. The Klingons proclaimed the planet to be a new territory of the Klingon Empire. To blend in and hide their presence, Kirk and Spock disguised themselves as Organians, not wishing to be captured by the Klingons as prisoners of war. Kirk and Spock attempted to inspire the Organians to rebel against their Klingon occupiers. Unfortunately, to prevent any violence, the Organians turned them over to the Klingons, revealing their true identities in the process. Kirk and Spock were taken prisoner, but were later broken free.

Kirk and Spock attempted an attack on where the Klingons had set up headquarters, planning to hold the Klingon Commander hostage. However, the Klingon Commander welcomed the Starfleet officers, proclaiming that he was looking forward to battling the Federation fleet that was on its way. Soldiers arrived to restrain Kirk and Spock, and the Federation prepared to engage the Klingons in battle above the planet. Before battle could begin, the Organians showed their true colors.

Organian Intervention

They revealed themselves to be extremely advanced, noncorporeal beings, and began to alter the perceptions of all the warring ships and officers. Any weapons or instruments of war were suddenly too hot to touch, and rendered them unable for use. This brought an abrupt end to the war.

The leader of the Organian Council appeared to both the Federation and the Klingons, announcing the unilateral imposition of the "Treaty of Organia."

This treaty established ground rules for further interaction between the two powers, and for the resolution of the territorial disputes.

Federation-Klingon War (2372-73)

Background

During the early 2370s, the Dominion sent several Changeling/Founder agents to infiltrate the Alpha Quadrant powers, in preparation for an invasion. In 2372, the Cardassians had an uprising, and their civilian government took control. Changelings in the Klingon government convinced them that the revolt could have only happened with enemy help, and egged the Klingons onto invading Cardassian space.

Starfleet refused to support the Klingons, and condemned their invasion of Cardassia. The Klingons in turn withdrew from the Khitomer Accords, the peace treaty between the two. Starfleet protected the Detapa Council, and the Klingon fleet rained down on Deep Space 9. (See main article: First Battle of Deep Space 9)

War and Peace Talks

Klingons continued on with their invasion of Cardassian space, occasionally clashing with Starfleet along the way. They eventually ordered Starfleet back from sectors previously handed over to the Federation, and the worlds in question called in turn for pre-emptive strikes against the Klingons. The Klingons sent a fleet to conquer back the territory, and Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia prepared for war. In 2373, the Klingons invaded Federation space up to Bajor, and the Federation found their defenses lacking.

Based on inside intelligence, Starfleet sent a team to expose any and all Changelings inside the Klingon government. Once found out, the Klingons themselves killed the imposters, leaving a Klingon in charge who wasn't willing to end the war unless the Empire was allowed to annex the world they had already captured. Captain Sisko was able to convince them to enter a cease fire, and begin peace talks. The cease fire was briefly violated several weeks later, when Klingon troops attacked a Federation colony, a Federation starship being destroyed in the process.

When the Cardassian Union joined the Dominion in 2373, the Klingons and the Federation were forced to join against the superpower. Jem'Hadar crossed the Bajoran Wormhole and joined the Cardassians in their fight against the Klingons, causing severe losses. The Klingons were forced to retreat from Cardassian space, and accept that "the enemy of thy enemy is my friend." Klingons arrived at Federation starbase Deep Space 9, where Sisko convinced them to revive the Khitomer Accords, and defend the station side-by-side. With the alliance restored, the Klingons established a permanent military presence on Deep Space 9.

Aftermath

The Founders were successful in tearing the Federation and the Klingon Empire apart, even though it was temporary. The destruction of the 72-73 war crippled both sides, and made the Dominion's invasion of the Alpha Quadrant much easier. The Second Battle of Deep Space 9 began, bringing with it, the Dominion War.
