Personal History

Childhood

Born in a small town outside Galway, Ireland, Ethan Harkness grew up on a potato farm with his family. The middle child of three, Ethan quickly learned how to best stand out in a crowd, especially considering that he was competing not only with his brother and sister, but also the work that had to be done on a day-to-day basis. The Harkness' were simple folk - depending on hard work and focus to get their goals in life. Ethan was a true exception and took to formal schooling and tinkering from a young age.

Once he was old enough to work on the family's farm and really do chores, Ethan found himself taking things apart. It came to a head when his father caught him disassembling the Geometric Irrigation system console at the age of fourteen. Faced with punishment that could last until well past his collegiate years, Ethan, for the first time, had to reassemble something to its same condition. It took him three days and about a half dozen electric shocks, but the irrigation system got rebuilt and Ethan's life was extended. When he wasn't destroying farm equipment, Ethan always found his nose in a textbook. He loved math and science, always staying after for extra projects and extra credit. From time to time, Ethan's curious nature to in the way, however. When he was seventeen, using parts from the farm and some materials squirreled away from school, Ethan built a large output electrical reactor. It was a marvel of modern engineering...until it blew up and destroyed a small shed and three wandering chickens were vaporized in the aftermath.

Finally having no more of Ethan's shenanigans, Ethan's father brought him to Dublin to meet Harry Kim, famed engineer from the USS Voyager, at a symposium where he was speaking. Aengus Harkness thought it would be better if Ethan spent time in a more rigid institution like Starfleet. He knew such a renowned expert in Warp Physics would intrigue Ethan. It worked, and Ethan spoke with Kim for close to an hour about a slew of topics. As he walked away from that conversation, Ethan had three signed books and a determination to enlist in Starfleet. Without hesitation, he and his best friend went to enlistment exams for Starfleet Academy. Ethan made it, Jonah did not.

Academy

Leaving the world he knew behind, Ethan dove in to an extensive scholastic world and tried to learn it all. Settling for three majors and three minors, Ethan spent three extra years in the Academy with such a heavy course load. Ultimately, he felt it was worth it, considering himself a force to be reckoned with when it came to starship propulsion and warp engineering.

USS Avenger, NCC-1500

Ethan was assigned to the USS Avenger, NCC-1500 right out of the Academy.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Warp Theory, Mathematics, Quantum Mechanics
Academy Minor(s): Propulsion, Gravimetrics, Astrophysics
Hobbies and Pastimes: For Ethan, nothing beats reading a good book. He loves the older paper tomes of yesteryear: the smells, the tactile feeling, and the whole experience. Ethan also loves to tinker and invent, tearing apart any piece of technology he can get his hands on.
Short-Term Goals: Find his true place among a crew, and to be depended on.
Long-Term Goals: Ethan ultimately wants to have an Engineering section of his own, maybe even a command. Family and research are also something he'd like to achieve in the long off future, when there is appropriate time.
Personality: Ethan is very friendly and outgoing, although with aliens he can be a bit more timid.
Sense of Humor: Ethan loves a good joke and making people smile and laugh around him. At the same time, he has no qualms about being the butt of jokes or being the punchline. He tries to find humor in the majority of things... Engineering excluded. Engineering is serious business.
Phobias: Slugs. They are gross, slimy, and don't have eyes.
Likes: Ethan loves books, including holonovels. He also enjoys Mexican food, Celtic music, and dancing, usually like a crazy person.
Dislikes: When the laws of physics don't work the way he feels they should, especially when those laws impede his progress with impossible dreams.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Consistently messing up electrical current his head and shocking himself. Ethan hates the metallic taste in his mouth from being electrocuted.
Bad Habits or Vices: Ethan has a habit of tinkering with things that don't belong to him. It has led to punishments and retribution throughout his life, but he simply cannot stop his curiosity. Also, he can lose himself in his books and will lose track of time.
Achievements: Not killing himself up to this point during his unsupervised research. He hopes to achieve formal accolades in the future.
Disappointments: When his best friend didn't get in to Starfleet Academy and he had to leave him behind. Also, when he met Harry Kim, Ethan did not get to have the extensive physics conversation as he had hoped.
Illnesses: None, Ethan is fit as a fiddle.
Strengths: Ethan is a very quick thinker, and he trusts his instincts. He is very good at problem solving and thinking outside the theoretical box.
Weaknesses: Doesn't understand people's academic limitations. Stubborn to a fault against failure, especially his own.
Fears: Ethan is scared to death about failing when people are depending on him. Research projects and school is one thing, a starship full of people is another.
Prejudices: While not a full prejudice, Ethan has never been all that comfortable around alien beings. Living in such a secluded area of Earth made it difficult to acclimate, which has made his more modern, open world awkward at times.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Khakis or slacks with a button down shirt, soft shoes like loafers.
Distinguishing Features: Ethan's most notable characteristic is his smile. It's big, welcoming, and fun.
Pets: Dog - Harry, Cows - Daisy and William, and seven chickens, typically named a variety of Celtic and English swear words depending on who is working with them.
Friends: Jonah Cavill, his boyhood friend. Jonah was not able to get in to Starfleet Academy, so he now lives in Dublin working as a hydroponics technician.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Once, when repairing his father's tractor, he cracked its core and received third degree plasma burns on his left arm. He was in the hospital for nearly a week and received skin grafts that were still painful despite modern medicine.
Best Time: One of the best times so far was building the electric reactor and having it work...at least, for a little while. It was the first time Ethan had built something from scratch, mentally affirming he had the chops to produce great things.
Most Crucial Experience: Meeting Harry Kim, and making the determination there and then that he was going to join Starfleet and be an engineer.
Role Model: Harry Kim
