Personal History

Born on Earth the year before the start of the First General War, Rincewind spent most of his early life on a starship with his parents, based on the Romulan/Federation border. They spent most of their time together avoiding Romulan patrols. As they were both stellar research scientists, he developed a scientific approach to life. For fun, Rincewind spent time reading anything he could get his hands on, be it scientific journals or a murder mystery picked up on the last Starbase that he had visited. In addition to this, he and his father often played Velocity against each other in between work hours. The ship was an out-of-date Raven class science vessel, named the FSS Pratchett. He and his parents were the only permanent members of the crew, frequently travelling for months with no-one else on board. Whilst this was not always the case, other passengers or crew quickly departed. The family attributed this to the danger of their mission – examining stars under the noses of the Romulans was not a popular position, but for them there was no better way of life.

Rincewind first became interested in medicine when he was injured by a malfunctioning plasma conduit at the age of eight. He was confined to sick bay for several weeks and had to have a replacement, mechanical, eye. During this time his doctor, an EMH, was constantly active and Rincewind asked him a great deal of medical questions, which furthered his interest. At the age of 18 his parents couldn’t keep up with Rincewind’s quest for medical knowledge and so sent him to Star Fleet Academy.

Whilst he had been sedated following accident which damaged his eye, Rincewind’s parents had missed an opportunity to examine the quantum effects of a star without the intervention of the Romulans. They had missed this golden opportunity because the power needed to keep the EMH active to monitor his condition left not enough power to run sensor sweeps and the engines, not without potentially overloading the warp core’s power matrix. Without sensors, there was no point in seeing the star; without engines there would be no way for them to escape if the Romulans found them in their space. This left Rincewind despondent for months, and made him think that a living doctor would have enabled him to survive and his parents to get their scans.

At the age of 15, his meagre medical knowledge meant that he had to stand in as the ship’s doctor due to a failure in the EMH’s program. The ship was, at the time crewed by no less than six people, including his parents. When the EMH was repaired six weeks later, everyone on board complimented his excellent doctoring.

Once, whilst examining a class-8 star, the Pratchett was attacked by a Romulan warbird. Due to the gravimetric effects of the star, the sensors were unable to detect the cloaked vessel. The Romulans then boarded the Pratchett, hoping to interrogate the spies they expected to find. In the ensuing battle, Ulrika Ennui was badly injured by a disruptor shot to the shoulder. By taking advantage of a malfunctioning airlock, Rincewind and Ivan were able to hold off the Romulans long enough to get away from the Romulan border. During the time taken to get from the Border to a Starbase, Rincewind managed to keep his mother’s condition stable. This affirmed to him that he wanted to help preserve lives, in the face of the wars that had spanned the quadrant.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Human physiology, exobiology
Academy Minor(s): Exophysiology
Hobbies and Pastimes: Holds a Shodan black belt in karate. Plays Velocity in his spare time
Short-Term Goals: To beat his top score at Velocity
Long-Term Goals: To learn how to perform the Vulcan nerve pinch
Personality: Calm, slow to anger. Stubborn
Sense of Humor: Quick to laughter – often uses jokes to lighten grave moods
Phobias: Warbirds
Likes: Helping people and being thanked for it
Dislikes: Helping people and them not thanking him, or being difficult patients
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Can’t stand people moving his stuff around, especially so he can’t find it
Achievements: Helped his parents prove their theories about stars emissions of delta radiation by pointing out that they hadn’t performed a subspace scan of the stars, which would reveal a delta radiation source that was interfering with their scans
Disappointments: Due to his ocular injury and the power requirements of the EMH, Rincewind’s parents missed a chance to gather important scientific data. This made Rincewind feel guilty
Illnesses: Damaged right eye due to a malfunctioning plasma conduit
Strengths: Reasonably quick-witted, as well as being willing and able to think “outside the box”
Weaknesses: Nerves can cause him to doubt what he is doing is correct, which can slow him down significantly. Growing up with basically only his parents for company, he isn’t as outgoing as most doctors (but he tries harder)
Fears: Failure, letting his patients down when they need him
Prejudices: Dislikes Romulans, considering them to be monstrous. This is because he spent all of his early life hiding from them
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Jeans and a short sleeved T-shirt, with a jacket if necessary
Distinguishing Features: His right eye has a silver iris
Pets: None

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Causing his parents to miss out on once-in-a-lifetime scans due to his injuries
Best Time: Being toasted by the crew for his excellent doctoring when the ship's EMH failed
Most Crucial Experience: Preserving his mother’s life after the Romulan attack
Role Model: Doctor Julian Bashir. Rincewind (unaware for a great deal of time about the genetic enhancements) considered Bashir to be the pinnacle of what a doctor should aspire to be. After discovering the nature of Bashir’s genetic alteration, Rincewind’s opinion altered not one jot
