Personal History

Raised by her parents and her grandmother, a resistance fighter named Emer Marthen who passed away when Odani was 17, stories of the Cardassian occupation were the soundtrack of her formative years, and often the stuff of her her nightmares. Her father owns and runs a shop that specializes in rare Bajoran artifacts, which brought a myriad of species from all walks of life through his doors, exposing young Odani to different cultures and ideologies from a very early age. Before opening his shop, Emer Baatrys was an officer of some rank in Bajoran intelligence, and more than artifacts were brokered at his establishment, though he managed to avoid detection.

Odani's mother Emer Teeran, a hover vehicle engineer, noted Odani's inherent natural talent and interest in all things mechanical, and happily nursed her daughter's gifts, taking her along to work as often as possible. By age 10, Odani could disassemble and rebuild all the technology in her mother's repertoire, and Teeran struggled to find a way to help her daughter grow beyond her own knowledge and experience.

That prayer was answered when a young Starfleet officer named Shae Newsom, an engineer aboard the USS Anubis, entered Baatrys' shop while on shore leave and struck up a conversation with then teenaged Odani. They spent the next several days together wandering Odani's city, discussing subspace geometry, temporal mechanics and warp design, and Shae saw the girl's potential, introducing Odani to the idea of enlisting in Starfleet.

After Shae departed, Odani became sullen and rebellious, and the following summer Odani took off without permission along with two of her closest friends. Together they sought out places still left in ruins by the Cardassian occupation, sleeping in the skeletons of destroyed buildings and trading on Odani's skills at repairing technology or playing the harp to feed them. Odani kept a detailed journal during this time, a chronicle of all she saw and felt. At the end of their unauthorized odyssey, they met several family members of Kira Nerys, Odani's childhood idol, in Dahkur province. who reported the runaways to the authorities. They were taken home, to the relief of their frantic parents. Upon returning home, Odani was met with a strong reprimand from Shae via subspace communication, warning her that any further rebellious acts could seriously damage Odani's chances of entering Starfleet. Odani took Shae's warning to heart, but she could not forget the sight of the devastation left behind by the war, and vowed to do her part to make sure it never happened again.

The friendship between Odani and Shae continued, and Shae continued to mentor Odani, who found the remaining years of school challenging and her peers judgmental and critical of her plans to leave Bajor. Odani was tempted to take the leaving exam early and enlist in Starfleet, but Shae convinced her to stick it out and graduate with her class so the Academy would see she was disciplined and principled. To her great relief she was accepted at Starfleet Academy and three days after graduating from school, Odani left Bajor for Earth.

Odani marveled over the next four years at how right Shae had been; it took every bit of her discipline and self-will to make it through the grueling Academy curriculum , though there were times she was so enamored of what she was learning and studying she wished her time at the Academy would never end. The sense of camaraderie and shared destiny that bonded the cadets and their instructors imparted a sense of family and purpose. Exposure to the wealth of engineering knowledge contributed by so many alien cultures changed Odani's way of thinking about everything, and she began to find the inner peace the Prophets encouraged

She also began to see new possibilities for future technologies, particularly warp design, and her instructors encouraged her interests and helped her to formulate a plan for her career that would take her there. With their help and the friendships she formed at the Academy, she is moving forward to the next stage with newfound confidence and a better understanding of her own people's place in the universe.
