The Elway Theorem was a proposed alternative to transporters, theorized and invested by Professor Elway.

His theory on inter-dimensional travel became known as the Elway Theorem, in which he theorized that by folding dimensions instead of subspace, travel could be instantaneous.

  • This method of transport was also referred to as "adaptive transport," "folded space transport," and "inter-dimensional shifting."

The Elway theorem was abandoned by Starfleet in the 23rd century, after it proved to be inaccurate, and fatal.

  • Such transportation resulted in cumulative damage to a person, as every "jump" would slightly warp the DNA, and affect the cellular structure of anyone using such technology.

In 2366, terrorists on Rutia IV used this transporting technology in order to aid them in their political efforts.

  • While dropping off medical supplies, Dr. Crusher is kidnapped by one of these terrorists, taken for her medical knowledge.
  • She discovers the cellular degradation caused by their mobile transport devices, and informs the terrorist leader that there is nothing she can do.
  • Back on the Enterprise, Engineers figure out how to track the users of these transporting devices, just as the terrorists use these devices to invade the Enterprise.
  • The Captain is captured, but now able to track the terrorists, the hostages are recovered, and the terrorist base compromised.
  • While the current political situation on Rutia IV is unknown, it is assumed that the terrorists continued to use the interdimensional transporting devices.
