Personal HistoryLara's mother, Captain Ariana Hess, met a member of the Romulan government while on a mission to create a dialogue between the Orion's and the Romulan Star Empire over the selling of Romulan technology. Captain Hess, then only a Lieutenant Commander, came away from the mission pregnant with the Romulan's child.
Embarrassed, she gave her daughter to an orphanage shortly after her birth, giving the owners strict instructions as to keeping her identity a secret. The owners have a hard time finding someone to adopt Lara because of misgivings over her being half Romulan until she was finally taken in by an older woman who could provide her with a home but couldn't interact much with her because of her advanced age.
Lara finally found out who her mother was when Hess, now a Captain, fell seriously ill and needed a transplant that Lara was the only match for. Captain Hess has acknowledged that Lara is her daughter but embarrassment over how she was conceived and the aftermath of the First General War left the Captain with little interest in her child.
She decided to enter Star Fleet because she felt it was her only option. She had never learned a trade or a craft and had no close adult figure to guide her potential. Incredibly intelligent, Lara has always been fascinated with internal medicine because when she was young she felt that if she could fix what was wrong with her then someone would want her.
