Personal History

Alora’s father, Mass, bought the woman who was to be her mother from a member of the Orion Syndicate; it had been part of a wonderfully profitable deal.

Mass was in the salvage business, an upper level manager of the company’s main warehouses on Ferenginar, mostly small stuff, nothing bigger than shuttles, and a vast majority of it was un-cataloged; i.e., a profit opportunity. Working on a holiday one late night, Mass came across one of the seemingly boring plastisteel containers that usually held rather useless junk, worth some small amount for recycling, but his lobes began to tingle in excitement. This particular warehouse structure was decades old and in a relative state of disrepair. Opening the crate, he discovered a small cache of exotic rifles (which were scavenged during or just after the Dominion/Federation war).

Mass through his contacts, found a buyer from the Orion Syndicate and set up an exchange. An Orion named Teerv was most impressed with the weapons, he was also traveling with a gorgeous human woman that appeared to be his slave. Something about the slave Valeen warmed his lobes beyond typical reason. Mass discovered through negotiations that the Orion had procured the Valeen from a pre-industrialized (let alone pre-warp) human populated planet outside of the prying eyes of the Federation. Teerv and his group would on occasion take the prettiest young women and either keep them or sell them. It was all very hush-hush.

Mass was smitten with Valeen, but he was a wise enough Ferengi not to sell the farm for the woman. It was all well and good to get latinum for the discovered weapons. Besides, Teerv said the woman wasn’t for sale for any amount latinum, he had enough money as it was. Just shy of completing the deal, Mass brought out some additional rifles, these being rather special...Jem’Hadar make, the real thing and in perfect working order. Teerv’s eyes widened in desire. A short haggle later and the Orion offered a pretty some of latinum. However, Mass wanted Valeen...in addition to the stated bars. Teerv was thinking it over; and to help persuade the Orion further, Mass offered a handful Romulan disrupter pistols as a friendly gesture. ‘Done’.

The baby (at that time, named Gloria, a.k.a. Dis) was born nine months later. Mass had failed to care as the gender of the child was found out to be a girl. He would have preferred that the pregnancy be terminated, but Valeen wanted it so he had acquiesced. To make things worse, the girl-child was ungainly even for a Ferengi. ‘What a disappointment.’ Mass said, and from then on ignored his hybrid daughter. Valeen seemed to care for the child however, and Mass’ work kept him busy so he accepted the small monetary burden and the greater ego deflating burden. He would try for a son next, and he’d use all of science and medical techniques to guarantee it! He was successful in this endeavor and Valeen managed to birth two sons in the next few years.

At two years old little Dis could speak in full sentences and had shown that she was very bright. She took no notice that she had worn no clothing for her short life. It was this time when Zreg would occasionally visit, offering a tidbits about various deals and economic trends, especially with the Federation being the focal point in subsequent wars. War was good for business. However at Zreg’s more advanced age, and having lost his wife of many years to an illness, and his own children ignoring him, he became rather fond of the little chatter box. As Mass never let the child out of the domicile, Zreg thought it wouldn’t hurt to communicate with her. She often asked about this rule or that, why was it okay to profit from family, why is gold-pressed latinum used for money and so on.

As Dis’ child years came and went, she had learned to spot market forces and Zreg encouraged her to offer her advice. It was apparent to Zreg, that Mass was losing a great deal of latinum having ignored his child, though it was happily his gain; and Zreg was okay with that being Dis’ and his secret. The girl was so starved for fatherly-like attention, that she offered Zreg her insights for next to no profit; warmth, and a small amount of kindness was her currency.

Dis had little contact with her brothers, Mass deciding it best for his sons to get the best schooling away from home and the ungainliness of his daughter. Valeen certainly didn’t seem to mind, her focus and love seemed destined only for the daughter.

Zreg insisted that Dis never utter the R of A out loud; because if discovered, both would be prosecuted severely. So Dis committed a fair number of the Rules to memory; the ones Zreg had mentioned or the ones she had heard her father say.

Dis was also curious about more than latinum; there was a whole galaxy out there, she was curious about the ‘how and why’ things were. Atoms and gravity, molecules (organic and inorganic), subspace communication and starships. When her father was away on business, Dis downloaded what she could from the open Ferengi Library, she would have her education.

In her 15th year, she reached puberty, and in a three month span grew nearly a foot and towered over her Ferengi friend Zreg. She had blossomed into a young woman, her features morphed from a plain more-or-less Ferengi female look, to a beautiful hybrid, that took the best features from both sets of genes. Her adult teeth grew in straight and perfect, though the combination gave her mouth the appearance of the Terran mythological beast; vampire. Her canines were fairly long, though her lips hid them well enough, and her front teeth were pointed only at very oblique angles.

At age 18, accepted into Star Fleet Academy, first try. Curriculum of mostly general science, partly so that she would have an overall understanding of ‘everything’ and secondly, she has interests in virtually everything related to the Sciences.

Graduated Academy at age 22, Midshipman Gloria Dys assigned to USS Copernicus as Science Officer. En route to the Copernicus, a temporal event occurred (through some fault of Dys’ own), where Mid Dys, essentially for 29 pieces of gold pressed latinum, bought/purchased her future self to be in the present (and her present self was transferred 8 years in the future) from a Ferengi businessman; who had come across an ancient, alien artifact that could maneuver a person through time. Apparently, the switch of Dys’ present and future selves had expended the artifact’s power and now is an inert curio piece.

Dys’ future self was First Officer of the Copernicus under Captain Jane Fields, and she has full memory of her career aboard the Cop (albeit an alternate time-line). In Federation Space present, the future Dys has been integrated into the present time-line and Star Fleet records show that Dys has indeed been assigned to the Copernicus as First Officer, replacing the re-assigned Commander Areack Jackson.

Mid Dys, 23 years old was thrown into the future time-line where a temporal disaster was averted and where for the next year and half, young Dys was accepted reluctantly into the crew of the future Copernicus.

Young Dys plus the future's John Zenteal (a crazed version of the Copernicus' Security Officer) arrived in the current time-line. So now there existed two Gloria Dyses, separated by 8 years of age and experiences. The younger Dys, agreed to change her name to Alora, a name of suggested by the future Zenteal (the name of the future Brooks' girl friend that had he had left Dys for). Johnny Z, as future Zenteal was called, was placed in the brig and more or less forgotten.

Alora spent ~ 18 months aboard a time-synchronized future Copernicus with transwarp capability. That future’s Capt Fields was very careful to limit Alora’s exposure to the future technology and events; so upon Alora’s return to her original time-line, there would be little issue with her meager future knowledge.

On an emergency mission that affected the core Federation worlds of Vulcan, Andor and Tellar, an opportunity occurred where the elder Dys could return to her future time-line...home. However, something happened (presumably something terrible, horrible) while she was in her correct time-line; and Commander Gloria was sent back in a specially designed, temporal (and transwarp) capable shuttle, the 'H.G. Wells'. Dys however, ended up with substantial memory loss (she didn't know who she was) upon an Orion Syndicate world (depraved even by their standards) called Helven VI. Brutalized and worse, Dys was rescued by a small undercover Copernicus party led by LCdr Jane Fields. Dys continues to recover (mentally) from her ordeal, but the memories from her short visit to her future-past appear to be gone (apparently mind-wiped as if performed by a low skilled Vulcan-mind meld). Gloria Dys does feel though, at home, in the existing time-line.

Alora, Gloria and LCdr Fields had become sisters in spirit if not in all actuality and have a pretty close relationship with each other.

On Stardate 21009.30, Gloria Dys' 'future-past' had finally caught up with her. Dys was relieved of her Copernicus FO position and was remanded indefinitely to Starbase Alpha for 'Examinations'. Commander Dys went missing/AWOL on or around Stardate 21009.29

Alora Dys was promoted to Lt[JG] just prior to Stardate 21009.30 and officially listed as a Science Officer effective Stardate 21010.30.

On a whim, Alora Dys took the Bridge Officer’s Test at the bet of fellow Science Officer, Lieutenant Taylor. Her prime weakness was in the Engineering battery of tests; but days of study remedied the situation to passing marks. Melee/hand-to-hand combat, Dys passed with ease; her training with SCPO Darok and Security Officer/COS Tom Dixon had given her the techniques to truly excel. Additionally, Dys had come across some old holo-deck combat scenarios designed by former COS, First Officer Avark. This gave Alora some un-orthodox fighting moves. As for hand phaser usage, her marks were acceptable and rated competent. Of the ‘Order a crewmate to their death to save the ship scenario’ Dys without hesitation, under three unique scenarios, sent Taylor, Sring and Tom Dixon to certain death. In a surprise move, Taylor also constructed a scenario where FO Fields ordered Dys to take command in an attempt to ascertain Dys’ handling of sacrifice done on her behalf. Each scenario save for the 13th try, Alora Dys made the attempt to save her friend and mentor… each time causing a great loss of life. Taylor’s official notes stated that Dys passed and made no mention of previous 12 tries; and Dys was granted the Command School ribbon.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): General Science
Academy Minor(s): Cybernetics, nano-technology, probability mathematics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Plays the cello, games of chance, looks for deeper meaning in the Ferengi bible: The Rules of Acquisition, martial arts
Short-Term Goals: To distinguish herself as a unique person and to move out of Gloria’s long shadow.
Long-Term Goals: To achieve something akin to be half the woman and person that her older sister had become. Career wise, to become an indispensable Science Officer to the ship’s CSO.
Personality: Very efficient and ordered, confident. May appear aloof and somewhat arrogant. There are occasions however, where Alora will use her feminine whiles to attempt to get what she wants
Sense of Humor: Dark, loves the Terran ‘Darwin Awards’
Phobias: To be treated like a typical Ferengi woman; naked and subservient, and little valued
Likes: Learning in the general sense, oomox, Afro-Caribbean music, Terran ‘classical’ music, gold-pressed latinum (not so much for its own intrinsic value, but for how others value it), real alcoholic beverages, mint tea, artificial cinnamon candies, real meat/animal flesh (virtually any non-sentient species)
Dislikes: Synthehol, replicated food (partly why Gloria stays thin), persons who act before even a modicum of thought (which includes her Midshipman self), super-advanced beings (Organians, Q’s etc., not usually good for business, but they exist), mushrooms and associated fungi (for eating), coffee
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who sing off key but don’t know that they do
Bad Habits or Vices: Mildly short tempered at persons that take excessive time doing things (save for oomox), forgets or chooses to not to say ‘thank you’ often enough (Gloria is aware of this and is working on getting better), her praise is sparse. May over indulge in intoxicating drinks when off duty every once in a while
Achievements: Deans List at the Academy
Disappointments: Her upbringing; Gloria was treated as an unwanted burden, that was until she hit puberty and the ugly duckling turned into a swan. Her Midshipman self, for making such a whimsical, and poorly thought out business dealing.
Illnesses: Nothing of great note (very mild case of a Ferengi copper-pox; similar to Terran chicken pox)
Strengths: Very keen intellect, abstract thinker, driven to be the best (achieved on occasion, though usually second-best to others, though not by statistically much), physically attractive (to both humans and Ferengi males), adept at Star Fleet hand-to-hand combat techniques, and learning to be better.
Weaknesses: Somewhat arrogant, prideful, only semi-empathetic to others needs
Fears: Uncertainty in her return to her original time line
Prejudices: Closed-minded people
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Wears Flamboyant Ferengi suits and Ferengi-inspired business skirts
Distinguishing Features: When she smiles widely, she has the appearance of the Terran mythological beast: vampire. Her canines are fairly long, though her lips usually hide them well enough. She is also extremely tall for a Ferengi, and rather tall even for human female norms
Pets: None
Friends: Zreg, an old (Ferengi) confident of Gloria’s father’s. The only person who had given her the time of day when she was young and considered homely.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Three months after hitting puberty in her 15th year of life, her father had returned from a business trip. ‘Dis’ was her name back then; short for disappointment.

She had expected what she always expected, to be beneath Mass’ concern or notice, to demonstrate the complete absence of any family bond. She was unclothed as she had always been, however instead of a rather ordinary, garden variety Ferengi girl that cleaned house and did the cooking, there was this new, very appealing woman; and also very naked.

Her father for an instant, had not recognized her, thinking that she was some concubine gift from his employer. After the momentary leer and recognition set in, Gloria was ordered to get clothing ‘This instant!’ Once clothed, Mass looked over his daughter approvingly and then gave her a warm hug. Even then she was a head taller than her father.

‘You’re so beautiful...’ Mass muttered; accepting his child for the first time in his life ‘...glorious!’ Mass immediately changed Dis’ name to Gloria. The new Gloria loathed the juxtaposition of her father’s feelings from birth up to this point and she sensed his new pride with her. It was almost too much to bare...but bare with it she did.

Best Time: Was being accepted to Star Fleet Academy on the first try. She was so elated that she had had the skills and talent to succeed where most of her fellow applicants had not. No latinum had changed hands, no sexual favors had been asked for or given; it had been her own inner smarts and dogged determination that had made her successful. Her simultaneous promotion to FO (in her time-line) along with Jane Fields promotion to Captain. They were known as the ‘Best Bud Girls’.

Most Crucial Experience: Just before Gloria’s father sent her to Earth after deciding that his beautiful daughter would be better off, off of Ferenginar, she learned very well, how profit wasn’t always measured in gold-pressed latinum. (Preface: Zreg having taught Dis the rules of profiteering as a child, had profited keenly on Dis’ knack for providing tips on various transactions). Gloria had arranged to meet Zreg secretly, and offered him bits of oomox and other physical pleasures in exchange for tangible currency. She was quite successful in the endeavor as she pocketed eleven bars of gold-pressed latinum from him. A very tidy sum for a night’s work (though it wasn’t all truly work, there was some amount of emotional connection). Gloria was very pleased but for a short while, when Zreg announced that she could have gotten twenty bars from him. ‘Live and learn.’ It was a beautiful motto and very true. Knowledge was profitable, sex was profitable...she very fortunately had the lobes for both.

As a new Midshipman, being careful what you wish for. Her younger self bartered her older self to the ‘present’ and owes 9.6 hours of exclusive (to be paid within 18 months, or forfeited) proprietary time to the enigma-like Ferengi businessman, called Lood.

Role Model: Her father’s confident, Zreg; he had taught her the knowledge forbidden to most Ferengi females (though in some quarters the prohibition was easing slowly); The Rules of Acquisition, the Ferengi way of life. Zreg was also her first lover, and she did love the man.

Her future self and sister, Gloria Dys and LCdr Jane Fields who have accepted her as she is. SCPO Darok, for his martial skills and no nonsense demeanor.
