Personal History

Vyacheslav was born in a quiet country town within the Ural Region. He spent the large majority of his childhood fishing the Volgo river with his father, Vladimir, this included hiking over long distances with heavy packs – and often shooting local wildlife to ensure their safety. He enjoyed a peaceful and simple life, being taught only the necessary level of language, math, and the sciences needed to make him an effective farm hand. His mother, Oleysa, spent most of her time cooking and gardening – schooling Slav while she cooked, or planted, and he helped.

At the young age of 12, Slav lost his father to a hiking accident. A family tradition was to rogain through the Dyatlov pass – it was a common past time in the Ural Region, and for a lot of outdoor types from all over Russia. It was a difficult pass, and every family had it's own secret routes. After Vladimir Dyatlov had set the record time one year, he vowed to never cross that pass again. Slav pushed his father on the next year, challenging him to beat his previous time. Unfortunately, Vladimir never returned.

Oleysa found the following years increasingly difficult, and eased her pain with alcohol. Slowly she stopped gardening, then she stopped cooking – she only drank, cried, or played music too loudly. A family of country folk found themselves torn apart – and Slav knew he lost his mother when he saw her use a replicator for a meal. Something he only saw for the first time, after being on this Earth 15 years. At that point he packed his hiking pack, and decided to re-earn the family name.

His attempted crossing of the Dyatlov path, alone, without a map, or the secret route had scarred him emotionally and psychologically. Throughout the torturous, lonely, and cold nights he soon realised his survival was governed by the ability to adhere to a set of rules. Day in, day out – he slowly introduced new rules. His cross took him 3 months – the record time was 5 days.

When he returned he found his house empty, it stood alone on their farm. He was not surprised, but he looked for a note from his mother. When he couldn't find one he began tearing down whatever was left standing. Each motion caused excruciating agony, as he was battling exhaustion and fatigue, and compounding stress fractures. He only found a full bottle, on the floor in the middle of his old bedroom. No furniture in the house, no note. Just Vodka. That's the way he left it.

He set out to Yekaterinburg, the journey took a lot shorter than he expected – people offered him rides as far as they could go. He never went cold, no hungry – but he also never spoke. His only words were “Yekaterinburg.” and “Thank you.” Arriving there, he sought medical aid. In the interim while they treated all of his stress fractures, and injuries sustained during his crossing – he studied.

Soon after he recovered he began seeking work. Finding an opening at a small security firm, he started on the bottom rung – over watch. He applied himself with endless rigor, vitality, and perseverance. He had little life outside of his work – only save for the very sparse hunting trips on any holo simulator he could find. Slav regressed to the lonely mentality, every day was a set of rules, and each day he would revise them. Soon, every minute of his life was dictated by a new rule. It numbed a lot of the pain, keeping his head busy. He found himself fearful, and uncomfortable when out in the open and exposed to the elements. It was as if he felt death's embrace itself, when it was just him and the environment. It sent his heart racing, and he was in a high state of panic for the majority. It wasn't so bad in the holosuites, with the environment being fake – but prolonged periods set in the same anxiety.

He rapidly earned praise in his physical endurance, marksmanship and rapid grasp of the ins and outs of the law. Slav was moved rapidly to a middle leadership position - where he stagnated. His inability to form personal relationships prevented him from being a detective, but he lacked a lot of learning that was required of senior command within the firm. A separatist faction who militantly decided against life within the Federation and it's comforts raided a homestead in remote Russia – Slav and members of his firm responded rapidly to the scene, but decided it was out of their hands. Cordoning the area, they contacted Star Fleet and let them handle it. He saw the surgical precision that he admired, he saw the highly organized, and well supplied nature of Star Fleet, but most importantly he saw rules and regulations. He mulled it over for quite some time, and when the reports of the incident came through his mind was made up, he applied for the Academy – Security. He was permitted entry on merit and experience, rather than knowledge. His crossing of the Dyatlov Pass still served him well beyond the physical and psychological scars.

Vyacheslav treated his time at the Academy similarly. He kept his head down, he did the four years, but this time he didn't graduate impressively. He found he simply couldn't connect with perpetrators in Hostage situations, and often made ruthless, life threatening decisions to pursue a criminal. He graduated within the top 30% of the class, well enough – and he was disappointed.

The following years from Midshipmap to Lieutenant was spent aboard Star Base Bravo as a Security officer. His career progress was unremarkable, it was almost textbook advancement within Star fleet. You do your job well enough for long enough, they give you a new one. The two terrorist attacks on Star Base Bravo highlighted Slav's keen ability for tactical operations, situational awareness, and readiness for combat. During the anti-alien and anti-starfleet riots, Slav lead a team of Security Personnel in anti-riot formations, ensuring they didn't spill over into violence.

During the terrorist attack at Bravo: A large number of Security Personnel found themselves emotionally overwhelmed, and soon physically undermined in the circumstances. Slav began regrouping personnel and organizing a response, eventually aiding the Columbia crew in their Escape from the Pussycat Lounge. He went unknown and unsung to the crew by name, as his efforts and theirs were geographically separated by the explosion.

After his demonstration of ability and subsequent promotion to full Lieutenant, Vyacheslav was informed of a ship being recommissioned for a policing role – USS Ozaki. He was recommended to apply as a Team Leader – he lacked the character to serve as Chief of Security, but he certainly was an effective team leader.
