Drydock

A drydock is a space station facility (or part of a larger facility) used for the major repair, maintenance and upgrading of any space vehicle. They are most often found at shipyards, or attached to starbases.

  • Things such as construction of starships and other large spacecraft take place in a shipyard.
  • During the 23rd century, a starship in drydock was unable to maneuver or defend itself.
  • Departure was not intended to be fast, so no procedure existed for a rapid exit. Leaving quickly required firing explosive bolts from the moorings.

Some starship repairs can only be conducted in drydock, such as structural overhauls.

  • Rebooting major systems such as a ship's central computer core is typically done while docked.
  • Certain airlocks are used only while docked, such as ones used to access photon torpedo launch ports.

Federation starships have also been traditionally "christened" while in drydock, an old tradition based in wishing good luck and fortune.

Starfleet drydocks in planetary orbit use a variety of designs. Some are made to enclose a vessel, such as Earth's McKinley Station.
