Daffyd was born while his mother, a civilian scientist, was working on Oceanus IV. At the time his father was the Chief of Security on a Federation Space Station and their continued distance ended his parents marriage five years later. Oliver Drake later remarried and he and his wife had a daughter, Penny.
The young Drake grew up happily on Oceanus but his preoccupation with medicine and alien biology led him to join Star Fleet, to train as a medical officer.
Daffyd always returned home to Oceanus whenever he had the opportunity and at the age of 19, he married his childhood sweetheart, a native Oceanan girl named Iolite. Oceanans, like humans, are not known for their telepathic powers, however some like Iolite, have an unexplained ability to ‘know things’ and are regarded as strange. One of the things that first attracted Iolite to her husband was his complete acceptance of her. Despite their close relationship, they have no children and Iolite prefers to remain in her watery home, only having accompanied Daffyd on three tours of duty in the whole of their married life. At the time of the Gettysburgs disappearance Iolite was on her homeworld.
Drake is a good doctor who has never stopped learning, he is also very observant and a good judge of character.
