Pre-Academy

Akid was born of two loving parents on the planet of Betazed. While his adolescent years were mostly without note, it was not until the later adolescent years that it became apparent that he was not very talented in the telepathic and psionic arts. In fact, his tutors had been overheard on many occasions describing him as the least talented child they had ever seen. What should have been a joyous coming of age instead became a point of anxiety and depression. Akid suffered plenty of ridicule from his fellow classmates, but even worse was the look in his parent’s eyes. He didn't have to be an empath to see the pity and disappointment evident every time they thought he wasn't paying attention.

It was because of this that Akid left his home planet for Earth as soon as he was able. He spent many years wearing false contact lenses to hide this black eyes for even in his twenties, the realization and pity that found its way to every fellow Betazeds face was enough to send him back inside his shell. Because of these issues, it became very hard for Akid to open up, or make friends. He wasn't mean, or obnoxious. Nor was he aloof, or even particularly unfriendly. He had just never learned to make the connections most tended to learn in adolescence.

Academy

When he first applied to Star Fleet, he had lied on his application, claiming to be full Human. This was immediately found on his first physical and almost cost him his admission. After an agreement to meet with a counselor for the first year of his academic career, it was agreed upon to let him continue given that he agreed to not attempt to lie or hide his identity from any Academy official again. The embarrassment of the entire ordeal lead to him never wearing the contact lenses again.

Now, in his final year and ready to graduate Akid had managed to lock most of these issues away, though he still didn't make friends easily nor was he ever comfortable in the presence of his fellow countryman. He was however a strong student, and very suited towards the field of Engineering due to his natural tendencies to escape into his studies, and extreme, almost compulsive need to organize and plan.
