Personal History

Bill was born and raised on a merchant ship and as a result, he never really had a planet that he called home, just a hunk of metal in space. He was raised to be a merchant sailor like his family before him and his family was part of a merchant group who made a living trading goods between planets and doing cargo runs for various companies and governments, the Federation being one of them.

For a long time, life was good for Bill as he worked with his family and learned to become a decent sailor and rose up in‌ his family's ship to become a well respected crew member and a good helmsman. Sadly, all good things must come to an end; during his 21st year, Bill and his family were contracted to carry a valuable cargo through a potentially dangerous area of space. Unfortunately, the Orion Syndicate caught wind of the cargo and decided that they wanted it for themselves. Bill's ship was attacked and heavily damaged by the Orions who succeed in stealing in the cargo. Fortunately there happened to be a Federation ship patrolling the local area and picked up on their distress signal and came to the rescue. The Orions, not wanting any witnesses, had left a bomb on board the ship unknown to the crew. The Federation ship began beaming over members of the merchant crew as part of a rescue operation and Bill ended up being among the first of those who were beamed over from the quickly deteriorating ship. Without warning, the ship blew up and those who were left onboard exposed to the harsh vacuum of space and the deadly explosion within. Bill, safe on board the Federation ship, was forced to watch his home crumbled and his parents die. It was because of this attack that Bill developed a strong prejudice of Orions, or anyone with ties to the Orions, despite his lineage. Traumatized from the experience, Bill spiraled into a depression of guilt and sadness at the loss of his family and home and it was some time before he recovered. However, during that time he met, and was befriended by both the Captain and the Chief Tactical Officer of the ship that rescued him. It was with their help that he was able to get over the grief of the loss of his parents and get back to a form of normalcy. They even helped him get resituated on earth and it was at their suggestion and with their recommendation that Bill decided to join Star Fleet and do his part in protecting others. It was his way to be able to help to pay back his debt to them and as a way for him to deal with his past, to be able to protect others and their homes since he was unable to protect his own home.
