Thrawn and the Dauntless is given a mission to check out and re-supply a vital intelligence gathering station on the borders of the Romulan and Gorn Empires. Taking on board an intelligence specialist (LCdr Garellian) all that they know is that they have been attacked by a Romulan Fleet but their current status is unknown.

Departing starbase-1, they start off on a decoy course to confuse any Romulan sympathisers from reporting their course, but somehow the Romulans manage to move one of their cruisers in pursuit. Fortunately identifying their tail, the Dauntless sets a trap and neutralises the Romulan cruiser. They then change course to head for their destination at top speed. Arriving at the location they find the Intel-base heavily damaged and on battery power only. Though the minefields are still active, the rest of the defences were badly damaged during the massive attack, proven by the amount of debris orbiting the planetoid above which the space station resides. Thrawn quickly deploys away teams to the intel-base and the ground station, where the bases thermal generator transfer system is situated. Following a sensor sweep of the planet they identify a huge crater and debris of several Romulan ships. Thrawn deploys another away team to investigate, complete with fighter cover.

On arrival there is a one-sided shootout between Romulan survivors and the marine force, and prisoners are quickly taken and transported back to the Dauntless for Garellian to interrogate. Whilst surveying the crash site, the marines find some important information that the Romulans were trying to hide. Their job done the marine force heads off to rendezvous at the ground station. On the way they are ambushed by overwhelming numbers of Romulan troops but manage to make their escape. The fighter cover engage the enemy, and one of the fighters spots a Romulan Division closing on the area.

In order to buy time for repairs, Thrawn commits his marine forces to secure the ground station and plans to use the Dauntless as a platform to destroy the Romulan land forces. Before he can do so, the space station and the Dauntless are attacked by what appears to be the entire fighter complement of at least 3 Romulan carriers. Worse news is to follow as new sensor reports imply an additional 3 enemy divisions have landed, and all 4 are heading for the ground station – 120,000 troops against the 3 Dauntless companies.

With ground and space battles in full swing, Thrawn is surprised by an offer of help from a band of Orion ships, whose leader used to be Thrawns CTO. Together with the last energy reserves of the space station they manage to destroy several carriers and force the Romulan’s back. News from the space station reveal that there is nothing they can do to save her despite the successful efforts of the ground station personnel to restart the planetary generators and Thrawn orders the evacuation of the space station, its data and crew and the ground station. Making full use of a lull in the space fighting he identifies and destroys the Romulan ground forces command and control system, throwing the Romulans into chaos. With bare moments to spare he evacuates his men and withdraws. The space station, unable to support its orbit moves off location, and the energy transfer beam from the planet rips apart the Intel-base, causing it to fall towards the ground station. The resulting plasma explosion renders the planet totally devoid of all life.

Returning to starbase-1, Thrawn is accused of murdering over 120,000 Romulan troops by traitorous Romulan sympathetic ambassadors. After a tense meeting, he convinces the Fleet Commander and JAG that he is being used as a scapegoat and he is allowed to keep his command, whilst the hunt for the traitors gathers pace.

Well, what a day. I have been briefed on our next mission, the first proper mission for the new crew of the Dauntless. Once we have departed the StarBase I aim to call a department heads meeting to inform them all of the details. In addition I have a new advisor for this mission – LCdr Garellian an intelligence expert who I am sure will prove a valuable addition to the crew.

We also need to speed up the modifications to the hanger bay and the torpedo launchers, as I am sure that where we are heading we will need them working perfectly. The sensors and shielding enhancements have already been completed. In addition we are scheduled once we arrive at our destination to disembark a Long Range Recon Patrol (LRRP) behind enemy lines

We will shortly be handing our 2 adult and 1 child Romulan spies to Star Fleet security commander Blake who no doubt will try and obtain the reasons behind their mission. Then following the embarkation of out 3 companies of marines, our new fighter, shuttle and dropship units, we will be departing in a little under 3 hours time.

Personally I am eager to set off – to do our bit to start the fight back against the forces of evil….

Stardate 20204.18

Stardate 20204.18
We are at last on our way. Over three hundred heavily armed marines are now settling in their barracks, plus the recent arrival of our fighter detachment has bolstered our fighting capability.

In case any enemy agents were watching our departure, I have deliberately set our course towards the recently destroyed StarBase 209, a valid destination for a ship of this size. Another advantage is that unless they are scanning the route, it will be 2 days before enemy forces realise we haven’t yet reached our destination, and by then we will be a long way towards our real target – to investigate and repair if practical a vital intelligence gathering station.

The new shields, armour and sensors are functioning, leaving the torpedo systems and hanger deck to be completed by the Engineering department over the next few days. Then we will be ready

Stardate 20205.05

Stardate 20205.05
With the mission briefing now over, all departmental heads are returning to their teams to brief them on what lies ahead. The mission ahead is a bit tricky. We are to approach the borders of the Romulan and Gorn territories where there is still an area under Star Fleet control, though the regions either side were suspect and getting more so as the war progresses. Our mission is to check out and re-supply a major Federation listening post orbiting above a M class planet, that we know has been attacked by at least one Romulan fleet. Though we were in contact with the outpost, that link has now been lost and we will be using best possible speed once we have thrown off any following cloaked ships.

I have also appointed LtCol Avon as my Second Officer. The planning, command and control skills he brings to the post will be a valuable asset to the Ship Command Level.

On a personal level I must admit to be looking forward to this mission. Though this is a medium to high risk venture and we will have to be extremely careful, the Dauntless is a very powerful weapon and must be deployed into situations where we can use this technological marvel to her full potential. We had success on our shakedown cruise. Now its time to show people what this ship can handle herself in more difficult situations.

Stardate 20205.15

Stardate 20205.15
For the last 4.5 hours we have been heading for the now destroyed SB209 in order to throw the enemy off our real destination. I had feared that enemy observers would have seen our departure and arranged for our interception, and that now looks like what had happened. Our sensors picked up the warp signature of a cloaked ship following us, matching our speed and vector, and maintaining a distance of approx. 10 million kilometres. Thirty minutes ago I chose to engage her. After consulting LCdr Garellian and LCdr Rayne we deployed a minefield and missile launchers, initially under local damping field generators. A very good idea from our intelligence specialist and a trick I shall certainly bear in mind for the future.

The enemy literally ran into them as their generators came offline and was critically damaged. When her cloak failed, what appeared as a Heavy Cruiser sized ship materialised and I can only believe that they had been overloading their engines to maintain their course, explaining why their cloak had not completely masked their passage from our enhanced sensors. Her warp core was ejected and exploded right beneath them, causing immense damage. We estimate that though they are using their batteries to run and arm their ship meaning that they still posed a significant threat to an attacker, they will be dead within a short period of time. For that reason and in view of the importance of our mission I chose not to go back and destroy them. They were still formidable and engaging them would simply have delayed our mission, time that is now critical as we have lost contact with the space station. We will nonetheless notify Star Fleet to find their ship.

We will shortly be changing course onto our final destination, which will take approx. 4 days. I hope that we will get there and find that she is still under Federation control, but I fear that even if that is the case, it will not be long before the enemy return to retake or destroy her, and find us in her company. We will be pushing our ship engines to reduce the passage time, and we will be finishing the modifications to the hanger deck in preparation for battle.

And then we will be as ready as we can be, for whatever they throw at us

Stardate 20205.25

Stardate 20205.25
We have changed course and are heading for our final mission destination. Although there are some sensor readings coming from the direction of the space station, none have been detected of following ships. Personally I believe it unlikely that the enemy will have enough ships to have allocated another to us so soon. With luck our arrival will be unexpected and give us the upper hand.

To that end, all communications onto and off from the ship are blocked unless approved by myself, LCdr Rayne or LCdr Garellian. There must be no way that the enemy can discover our position by interrogating relay station download or upload logs, before we arrive.

Warp Engine Performance investigations are continuing to inch up maximum sustainable speed. Work is also continuing on the Hanger deck modifications that are on track for completion before we arrive.

This is definitely the calm before the storm …….

Stardate 20206.02

Stardate 20206.02
Well – we have arrived at our destination to show the intelligence outpost is in a fairly sorry state. It is damaged in a few sections and appears that she is running on battery power, presumably after an interruption in the power flow from their ground station. There is a very substantial debris field in the vicinity of the outpost that at a rough guess must be the remnants of a very sizeable Romulan battle fleet, proof if any was needed that the outpost packs a punch. We had further evidence of that when we ran into a defensive mine. Fortunately no one was hurt and it actually showed up a glitch in our defensive shield system, but it shows how dangerous this area is.

We are preparing to send an away team aboard the outpost to see what help we can render, whilst also running planetary and local system sensor sweeps to see what is out here. …….

Stardate 20206.10

Stardate 20206.10
We have docked with the outpost and the away team is in contact with the survivors to establish their needs.

We are still awaiting the results from our long range probes, launched in an attempt to see what is happening with the neighbouring systems. The outpost has lost all shields and it is important that we re-establish power flows from the ground station as soon as possible. I am awaiting the preliminary report from the away team – there may be something we can do using the ship systems. A marine company is preparing for transport down to the ground station as I make this log entry.

The planetary scans have revealed large areas that the sensors cannot paint a good picture of, due to local mineral deposits. Visual probes have revealed the remains of two crashed Romulan ships, mostly debris fields with no sign of life. We have also detected a huge crater on the surface, presumably the result of a ground impact of an extremely large ship. Whilst there is not much to find, it has attracted the interest of a sizeable group of Romulan survivors, which in turn means that its something I want to know about. I am despatching a space-borne marine assault force to investigate and take prisoners if at all possible. This is the first time that we have attempted this, and so together with our 4 fighters, we will learn invaluable information from this manoeuvre. …….

Stardate 20206.17

Stardate 20206.17
The situation we find ourselves in appears to be heating up. The damage to the outpost is quite severe, a lot more than first impressions would provide, and I can only assume that is why the Romulan’s didn’t press their advantage when they had the chance. Although their minefields are operational, their battery reserves are critically low meaning that her shields and defensive systems are no longer functioning, and their environmental services are fairly patchy and on low power.

Sickbay is transferring the badly injured to our facilities and establishing a mobile generator over there. We also have engineers now aboard the outpost establishing the extent of the damage and will try to restore some semblance of power.

We also have an advance marine squad currently securing the ground station, with engineers accompanying them to ascertain why the planetary power transfer system is inoperative. Further deployment of marines will follow until we can get the ground station’s shields up. At all costs that ground station must not fall into enemy hands. Loose that and we loose this outpost and possibly this entire sector.

In addition the marine assault group is approaching their destination against Romulan survivors who know we have spotted them. The enemy is definitely searching for something; something so important that it mustn’t fall into our hands. Our job therefore is to see that it does.

And as if that wasn’t enough to concern ourselves with, it appears that ships are present and almost certainly assembling in the neighbouring star systems, exactly in the manner I would have done in their position. We have also had indications of a planetary landing or takeoff near the southern pole, which is not encouraging. Add to that the almost certain “spy ship” somewhere and I think the conclusion can only be that we arrived in the nick of time.

Whether we will make any difference to the outcome only time will tell, but I am certain that this is the type of mission for which we were designed for and the sort of mission we must succeed in if we are to be victorious in the end.

Stardate 20207.05
Well it seems like ages since I last made a log but on looking at the records its been barely forty minutes, or thereabouts.

The situation continues to get more involved. The space station has destroyed what we now believe to be an orion pirate at long range. Though some would question the use of her reserves in such a display, I think that it was on balance worth it. Any observer, and there are bound to be some, would now believe the station is still functioning normally. That impression could be the saving grace of us all. We are replenishing their reserves as fast as we dare but the secret to success of this mission is to restore ground station power supplies, and the longer we can hold off or delay the Romulan fleet massing in the neighbouring star system, the better the situation we find ourselves.

I realise that some of the crew will by now be realising the precarious nature of our situation. The bottom line is this – we must leave this station fully functional. Evacuation is not an option. Whoever constructed this station and positioned her here did so for a very important reason. Her location means that a fully functional station can observe the enemy and give the neighbouring federation systems time to prepare for attack. This is a major space conduit from the Romulan star empire to this side of the Federation and Gorn Empires. The simple fact that the Romulan’s are prepared to risk ships and men to destroy her, rather than going around her shows that they realise her importance.

The away team(s) currently securing and searching the ground station have made what may well be a desperate discovery. A main corridor heading deep into the adjacent rock which had collapsed presumably as a result of the Romulan attack has yielded up members of her crew – so far all dead, crushed under the fallen ceiling. It appears that our counsellor is sensing the presence of a survivor and measures are being taken to rescue that person. Once the way is clear engineers accompanying the rescue team will be able to ascertain why the planetary power transfer system is inoperative.

The marine assault group has commenced their attack with the Romulan survivors in the crater. It is hoped that this pocket of resistance will be quickly eradicated and prisoners taken so that we can discover what they were searching for.

We have seen nothing more from the direction of the southern pole following the indications of a planetary landing or takeoff near the southern pole, but we will need to continue monitoring that area and be on our guard. Who knows what the enemy might or might not be planning. Whatever it is I am sure that when the attack comes we will give our best, and if we have prepared well – we stand a good chance of success in our mission.

Stardate 20207.18
The crater mission has been completed successfully by Captain Hampson and his Alpha Company. Five prisoners have been taken, some extra data crystals recovered, and the first use of a combined marine and shuttle/dropship attack from the Dauntless. All the more successful because of a few non-lethal injuries amongst our marines. The prisoners are now onboard and will be questioned shortly.

The ground station continues to cause some anxiety. Two Romulan spies have been discovered amongst the station complement, all our people so far deceased. The first was dealt with by LCdr Garellian and the remains taken to the space station. That one was a walking probe and time bomb and unfortunately we were unable to restrain the spy and keep him alive. The second attacked counsellor Lorien who was seriously injured but making a good recovery. That assailant was also killed. Defensive measures are underway to secure the station and a large away team is trying to find a way to get to and restart the generators that will power the space station.

The space station is being supplied by the Dauntless, and we are building up her power reserves. The station is sending out the odd pot shot at what appear to be Orion pirates, presumably fighting over the debris from the destroyed Romulan Fleet. That is all good as it makes the station appear fully functional, though one fear is that we are at risk here until the ground station power supply is reinstated.

On a personal front, I have received word of the death of Captain Alorian Dax from Commodore Longbow. It was a painful duty to tell the crew, a sizeable number drawn from the ex-Yoritomo crew, but I felt that it was best that they knew up front. That the enemy has taken her (including the trill forming part of her) from us is something I will never forget.

How a situation can change in the blinking of an eye.

Crater mission:-

On their way to reinforce the ground station, a sizeable force of Romulan’s ambushed Hampson’s company. Two shuttles have been downed and the status of those onboard, including MCapt Hampson and Ensign Hokai is unknown. LtCol Avon is carrying out a rescue using the dropship. In addition the use of our 4 F1-type fighters whilst not designed for ground attacks has been successful against ground troops. However it appears that the force that has carried out the ambush is part of a Romulan division numbering about 30,000 men heading towards the crater and presumably onto the ground station with heavy equipment. Communications with one of our fighters that obtained that information has also been lost.

Ground Station:-

We are despatching every marine we have to reinforce the ground station against a Romulan attack now underway, though the force is estimated to currently number several thousand. The mobile phaser cannons are apparently working very effectively, and we were to provide support operations for them. There has been no word from the Engineering and Science teams working on restoring power from the underground thermal generators to the space station. The entire mission now hinges on them – we simply must restore power quickly.

Space Station :-

Both the station and ourselves have just come under heavy attack from hundreds of enemy fighters. We have taken some damage but so far nothing serious. The fact that they managed to get so close is of major concern. Nothing had been received off our long range probes so how did they get so close?. I have Ensign McDade checking on the sensor readings now. We are attempting to protect the station but until we get main power restored from the ground station, the situation is perilous.

Stardate 20208.14

Stardate 20208.14
The status of this mission has been deteriorating steadily.

Space Station :-

The Dauntless and the space station were initially spreading the attacks from the Romulan fighter’s between the two, but with the space station power reserves very low they have all but ceased firing,. The Romulan’s have recognised this and have now redirected their attacks solely onto us. We have suffered some damage to our ablative armour systems and main shields are down to 46% in places. We have identified that there were 3 enemy carriers behind an advancing debris field, performed a commendable attack strategy and have damaged one of them. We are currently taking measures to restore the ships systems and try and mislead the enemy into thinking that reinforcements are on their way. Hopefully the ground station will restore power soon, return the space station to full power and then we can stabilise the situation.

Crater & Ground Station mission:-

Lt.Col Avon and the dropship have recovered the marines from the two downed shuttles and were on their way to dock with the Dauntless when the enemy attack commenced. They have been ordered down to the ground station to offer support there. With Hampson’s company, it will mean we have all 3 companies down there to try and hold off an ever increasing enemy force. Initially numbering 2,000 it will shortly be supplemented by a force of 30,000, and we now believe that up to 90,000 more troops may have been deployed. The colossal troop commitment is staggering, and unless a change in tactics occurred will be more than sufficient to overwhelm the ground station.

Stardate 20208.16

Stardate 20208.16
Supplemental:-

Both the station and ourselves have just come under heavy attack from hundreds of enemy fighters. Initially we took some slight damage and the battle looked like turning our way when the ground station engineers managed to restore power to the space station, returning it to the battle. Despite suffering some more damage, the toll on the enemy was high. However, they have now called three heavy cruisers to join the battle, and though we have taken some more significant damage we are still fighting, against a superior enemy force.

We also know that the battle down on the ground station has taken a significant step as large enemy formations are attacking the marine defenders. It seems that for a short time the phaser cannons providing the bulk of the defensive firepower lost their power supplies (Ed. By sabotage], but they are now back in action. So far the marines are holding their own, despite mounting casualties. Unless we can extricate the Dauntless from his fight, the odds do not look good. To that end we have recalled our long range probes, configured to transmit Federation battle codes to each other, in an attempt to confuse the enemy whilst we reappraise our tactics and initiate a counterstrike.

Then out of the ether, we unexpectedly receive word from a friendly Orion force that they are willing to help to our mutual benefit in return for salvage rights. The Orion force is led by our ex-Chief tactical officer Nacea. Agreement has been reached and I await them to join the battle. I sense that the change in offensive capability in favour of the Federation-Orion forces should be enough to turn the scales of the battle, though nothing can ever be certain with the Romulan’s.

We are currently heading home, after the conclusion of our mission. I would like to say the successful conclusion but that isn’t technically correct as the space station was destroyed. I don’t however consider it a failure. Tactically it was in my opinion a success.

When we first arrived our mission was to investigate why the space station was no longer in contact with Star Fleet and take measures to secure her situation long term. We found out why when we found the remains of a Romulan Task force and the station critically damaged, and it is clear to me now that as the space station position and condition was known by enemy forces and by their determined actions and military commitment to capturing her, that its long term future would have been untenable.

In the last hour since my previous log, the battle has come to its conclusion. The Orion’s were true to their word – they harried the enemy and split the thrust of the enemy attack. Both the Orions and ourselves can also be credited with destroying a number of their heavy ships and fighters. During this time, we received word that the station could not be saved. Investigations are ongoing but we believe that the re-routing of the station critical systems following their initial attack could not be reconfigured in time to prevent the thruster’s which maintain her orbital position from failing. Coincident with the Romulan orbital attack, their ground forces pressed home their assault on the ground station. Unable to tender support from the Dauntless, they fended for themselves with professionalism, determination, distinction and honour.

Once the Dauntless in co-operation with the Orion’s had managed to head off our attack, we were therefore able to evacuate the space station including their databases and engage the enemy ground forces. Destroying their divisional headquarters, followed shortly afterwards by their secondary headquarter units, we were successful in slowing their advances and almost certainly instilling in the enemy the fear of whatever god’s they believed in. This was reinforced by the detonation of 4 low yield torpedoes to simulate from a distance four mushroom clouds of immense power. The end result was that we gained valuable time to evacuate our planetary forces. Moments later, the space station was ripped apart by the ground station energy beam, and the resulting plasma explosion rendered the planet devoid of life.

Excluding the destroyed Romulan taskforce present upon our arrival and with the exception of one enemy carrier which escaped when the station exploded, the entire Romulan force comprising 2 more carriers, 3 heavy cruisers, several hundred fighters and 4 divisions of men have been destroyed. In the process I regret to announce that just over 80 of our comrades have been killed with 83 injured.

After a brief meeting with the Orion Captain we are heading home, making one scheduled stop en-route at Trill, where we shall conduct a memorial for our fallen. It is also my wish that a visit to the last resting place of for some of us our former Captain Alorian Dax will provide some comfort to my crew as they come to terms with recent events.

We are home after our first extended mission, following the brief stop over at Trill for the memorial service for our fallen. The trip home was uneventful with our battle damage being repaired as best we can. Due to the good work of our Engineers it is likely that we may not be required into the shipyards for repair, though I await the full assessment once the StarBase inspection id completed.

I await an audience with the Fleet Admiral in just under 5 hours time to delivery my report. I am uncertain what the response will be – technically the mission failed but with the outpost’s location discovered by the enemy and considering the resources they had already dedicated to capturing her, it is clear to me that she wouldn’t have lasted long on her own, tying up large resources of our own in an attempt to protect her. And the price we exacted for her demise was substantial. Still only time will tell.

Now, with the crew on shore leave I have time to finish the ‘paperwork’ and maybe join them in the Thirsty Fish. Who knows how long we will be here, though I cannot imagine the ship being left idle for long.

To be honest the Tavern holds ghosts for me – where Alorian and I first realised what we meant to each other and now she is gone. I will try and find Kelly and see if she can fill in the gaps on her departure.

After joining my crew in the Tavern for a short while, I had my meeting with the Fleet Commander. Rumours within the Federation Council accuse me of murdering Romulan prisoners whilst in my care, and the needless killing of 120,000 Romulan troops on the planet during the last mission by orchestrating, or at least not preventing, the destruction of the Space Station which extinguished all life on the planet. Currently I am still being accused of these crimes by the Fleet Commander, but I am being given the opportunity to explain myself, before a decision is made regarding the future. I vehemently deny all the charges and am now using this chance to question the motives and loyalties of my accusers.

During this time originally most of the crew headed to the Tavern to partake of the odd alcoholic beverage or two. Following a fracas, I asked Counsellor Lorien to run some survival training exercises for the officers in the StarBase Holodeck 5. Somehow [I think] the resulting holo-programme was not quite what he had in mind. Something has gone wrong and the officers find themselves in mortal danger.

After facing what seemed to be a very confrontational but informal court martial at times, I have managed to successfully convince Fleet Commander Admiral Benestad and two high ranking JAG officers that I am not guilty of murdering 120,000 Romulan’s, nor that I engineered events to fulfil that aim. As part of my defence my claims that some of the Federation Council Ambassadors or their aides are in fact traitors using information that could only have come from the Romulan’s themselves to discredit me, and through me the Federation and Star Fleet. The Admiral then confided that they had already arrived at the same conclusion albeit with all the information at their disposal, rather that rumours and snippets that he had given to me. My orders are to prepare his ship for its next mission and to remain visible but not to appear overconfident, the aim being to unsettle the traitors whilst Admiral Benestad defends me in council.

As to the crew, well the majority of the officers are still taking part in a survival training holo-programme. After escaping an area of quicksand and killing some ferocious animals, taking injuries in the process, they have retreated to a cave with bones covering the floor with the sounds of a much larger beast following them, possibly the mother of the slain animals. After establishing that the holo-programme will not terminate on demand, the team is now resting, but they are cold, wet and wandering what the future holds for them. The rest of the crew is either undertaking their duties, having some well deserved rest or partaking of a drink in the StarBase Tavern.

Life on the StarBase continues undisturbed with everyone trying to relax whilst we await our next mission. I haven’t heard anything further from Admiral Benestad, so I assume for the moment that he is doing battle with the Federation Council Committees.

Several other ships from the 1st and 2nd Fleets have now returned from missions, and I am hoping to catch up with news from several of their crew, all of whom I have served with before either within Engineering or some of the other departments.

The officers taking part in a survival training holo-programme have finally emerged with stories of arduous conditions and a few real injuries, the more serious of which are being sorted by the StarBase Medical teams. It would appear that a bunch of kids with more than a healthy interest in computers had created the game and that somehow the Dauntless officers accessed the still incomplete holo-programme. It is very fortunate that the injuries were not worst. LCdr Lorien is making the necessary complaints to security and the IT branch. On a more worrying but important point, it appears that we learnt a valuable lesson in the training programme, namely that the team doesn’t really function as a team unless someone is clearly appointed as leader. I will need to give some thought to putting in place a clear organisational structure should a similar scenario happen to the ship with her established command officers incapacitated.
