Personal History

Early Life

Jennifer was born into a relatively small family living on Ivor Prime. As the colony was relatively new, having been rebuilt since the Borg destroyed it in 2373, Jennifer grew up hearing stories about the Borg from people who’d survived the attack, mostly those who had been off world. Hearing the way the stories were told, and how she saw them as informative, Jennifer decided throughout her high school years that she wanted to become a reporter, so she could report events to others in the same way.

As she began her high school career, however, she learned there was almost nothing of a journalism program in place. Considering the status of the colony, most extracurricular activities hadn’t been as important to bring back. After getting in touch with her school’s counselor, and several rounds with the school administration, Jennifer succeeded in getting a small journalist team approved. Whether it sank or swam would be up to her, as was made evident by the administration. If, by the end of the year, interest wasn’t picked up by other students they wouldn’t spend any additional resources for the program.

With her work cut out for her, Jennifer became the editor-in-chief of one. Spending what felt like forever, she tried to find someone who was interested in becoming a reporter. With the school being somewhat small, she started to believe no one saw things like she did. One late afternoon, Jennifer was working in the classroom that had been allocated for the journalism program and was feelings the pressure that had been placed on her fifteen-year-old shoulders. It was on that day things started to change for the better.

Allegra was one of Jennifer’s fellow students, but was also someone that had never stood out. So, when Jennifer saw her in the classroom, her first thought was that she’d gotten lost. However, Allegra knew exactly where she was and expressed her intention to join the journalism program. Jennifer found out her new member didn’t have the qualities she’d expected to be a reporter, but the fact they were willing to work and learn stood out to her. With a team of two new members came slowly, and it made things easier to focus on what Jennifer wanted to do: discover and report the truth.

Up until her senior year, Jennifer and her team had mostly reported on school events, and while that was fine, she wanted to expand on that and give more information to her fellow students. The main reasoning was because Jennifer planned to one day join the Federation News Network, and she expected she need something substantial under her belt before that could even happen. Allegra, now her right-hand, was uncertain of taking that route with the school publication but offered to give Jennifer her support.

Deciding to go big, Jennifer decided to investigate rumors of a criminal organization starting to pop up on Ivor Prime. While they were a Federation colony, things still hadn’t been turned into paradise like Earth, especially since things weren’t restored to normal from before the Borg attack. Bringing that information to light with her fellow students, would help make her known and bring discussion on how to eliminate those misdeeds. To that end, Jennifer received a tip from an informant that wished to remain anonymous. However, the kicker was they would only speak face-to-face.

Allegra caught wind of this, and begged Jennifer not to meet the informant. Something seemed fishy and she tried to explain to Jennifer that a criminal might not have any reservations about getting a teenager off their tracks. Considering Allegra had always supported her in her endeavors, Jennifer tried to find out why she was making such a big deal about it. Her friend got frustrated and gave up. Allegra explained that if Jennifer was going to do something stupid it was on her.

As she reached the alleyway where the meeting was to take place, Jennifer waited for several minutes past the agreed upon time. Alarm bells started going off inside her head, and she started to realize that maybe Allegra was right. Trying to stay calm and collected as she retraced her steps, Jennifer ran afoul of a group of thugs as she almost got back to the main street. Without a doubt, Allegra was dead right and without any preamble they started beating her. Jennifer wasn’t much of a fighter, as she never had a reason to, and if it hadn’t been for a law enforcement officer passing by, she might’ve just perished that night. As a parting gift, one of the goons stabbed her in her right abdomen so the officer would be focusing on saving her life, rather than immediately stopping them.

Waking up in the hospital, Jennifer didn’t immediately remember what had happened. However, she saw Allegra at her bedside and the whole event came flooding back. Looking at her classmate, she expected an “I told you”, but instead saw the face of someone who appeared to have cried throughout the night. It was on that day she found out Allegra only joined the journalism program because she’d developed a crush on Jennifer, although she’d became a great reporter as well. Realizing why Allegra had been so adamant about her not doing something stupid, Jennifer apologized. To her surprise, Allegra kissed her. Then followed it up with a slap across her face and the obligatory “I told you”.

Before she was discharged from the hospital, Jennifer started to reflect on what had happened. She knew that she wanted to good with her journalism and help bring people to justice with her writing. However, when things came to bare, she found she was in way over her head. After rationalizing thing in her mind, she realized if she were trained, she could become like that officer who’d save her that night. While that would’ve been good, it wouldn’t fill the void of not joining the Federation News Network. For one thing, she wouldn’t get to travel around joining the local law enforcement agency. There was another organization she could join, and potentially do the same if not more. Star Fleet. In addition, she declined all efforts of the medical staff to completely heal the injury from where she’d been stabbed. Jennifer wanted to keep it to remind herself that actions had consequences, especially when they weren’t thought through properly.

Having graduated and passing the torch of editor-in-chief to one of the juniors, Jennifer finally felt like joining Star Fleet was the best call. However, talking about it with Allegra, who was now her girlfriend, seemed to be the biggest hurdle of it all. After a long discussion, Allegra was her usual supportive self because she believed Jennifer wouldn’t take as many crazy risks again, at least alone anyways. Initially worried that a long-distance relationship would begin almost immediately, Allegra packed her bags as well and took up residence in San Francisco. As Jennifer began her journey at the Academy, Allegra secured a position at one of the local Federation News Network outlets.

Star Fleet Academy

During her first year of training, Jennifer received the customary general basic knowledge all cadets received for the various departments, before finalizing on a specific one. With her history, there was no other option besides Security. It was the prime department to help directly protect other like she’d experienced herself. Signing up for the appropriate classes, Jennifer looked forward to the challenges ahead.

As she continued with her security training, Jennifer never forgot her roots and managed to become a writer for the Academy newspaper. It was a different ballgame from what she experienced during her high school years. Ivor Prime was effectively a small backwater planet and didn’t compare to the competition level in the heart of the Federation. Plus, it was a little disheartening not to be able to write the stories she wanted to. She’d gotten used to that when she was the editor-in-chief for her small group, but she realized even if she joined the Federation News Network it would’ve been the same, if not harder than the Academy newspaper.

While most of her training seemed to revolve around hand weapons, physical combat, and security procedures there was something her previous experience helped her with. As a security officer she would also be potentially expected to interrogate any prisoners held, and her time as a reporter had helped her better hone those skills. While more verbal force was needed, it was no different than asking questions of an interviewee for a news story. That was an area that she scored first in her class, but her other security areas could use a bit of touching up.

After four years of hard work, Jennifer finally came to an end of the first step in her journey. Alongside her fellow classmates, a hollow pip was attached to her collar and Jennifer was no longer a Cadet, now she was a Midshipman. Despite having gone through hell for the last four years, Jennifer knew that would only be a drop in the bucket. Allegra had attended the graduation ceremony, and decided to take Jennifer for a night out on the town before she shipped out for assignment.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security
Academy Minor(s): Journalism and Law Enforcement
Hobbies and Pastimes: Growing up Jennifer focused too much on her journalism that she never developed any hobbies. As she’s separated from her friend, and significant other, while on assignment she tries to buddy up with others, if possible.

Long-Term Goals: On the personal side, Jennifer hopes to one day settle down with Allegra. As far as professional things go, Jennifer doesn’t have much of a preference. However, if she chooses to remain in Star Fleet longer, she hopes to rise to a prominent position in Star Fleet Security. Otherwise, she hopes to one day work with the Federation News Network.
Personality: Jennifer tries to be friendly and outgoing to most people she meets. Sometimes it might be a bit too much, as she’s been told on at least one occasion.
Sense of Humor: Jennifer likes to think she’s funny, but there have been several times where her jokes haven’t hit the mark with others.
Phobias: Initially, Jennifer didn’t have any. However, after she was attacked while trying to cover a story alone, she’s afraid of going into a potentially dangerous situation without some form of backup.
Likes: Jennifer likes to dig for the truth in everything she finds. If it hadn’t been for her near-death experience, and if journalism hadn’t been an option either, she might’ve just gone down a scientific route.
Dislikes: Jennifer hates being told she’s wrong, especially when the other person overstates their point of it after she makes that wrong decision.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Jennifer can’t stand when someone is too sure of themselves, when there’s nothing to back their assumptions up.
Bad Habits or Vices: Jennifer tends to get too involved in searching for the truth. However, since she was attacked, she’s tried to use better judgment in that regard.
Achievements: Establishing the journalism program at her high school when the administrators didn’t see it as a high priority originally.

Off Duty Clothing Tastes: A nice comfy sweater and some sweatpants, if she at home for the night. If Jennifer’s out and about, she tends to go for a pair of jeans and a t-shirt although that’s not always a given. Anything that she finds comfortable and appropriate would be worn.
Distinguishing Features: Has a scar on her right abdomen. In addition, when she’s off-duty she wears a pair of glasses. They aren’t needed for her vision and are simply a fashion statement that carried over from her journalism days as she thought they made her look smart and more professional.
Pets: None. Although, when she finally gets a home of her own Jennifer would like to own a cat.
Friends: Allegra Compton

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Learning the hard way with not thinking things though. If Jennifer had seen through the woods that her informant hadn’t been legitimate, or even taken Allegra’s warning, she would’ve never been attacked and wound up in the hospital.
Best Time: Getting together with Allegra was the best day of Jennifer’s life. It wasn’t something she originally thought possible, but she’d assumed there was something there all those long nights working on stories. It wasn’t until she realized Allegra had been worried sick about her as she recovered in the hospital that it all became clear.
Most Crucial Experience: While it was also the most painful moment of her life, getting attacked in that alleyway helped transform Jennifer onto her new path. The law enforcement officer who rescued her planted the idea in her mind that she could do something similar for others.
Role Model: Jennifer always looked towards Allegra as someone she wished to emulate, even before they were a couple. Allegra gave her all in everything she did, and Jennifer aspires to do the same in her new career path.
