Personal History

Early Life

Born to Wallace and Verity Daniels in London, both were secondary school teachers and very loving towards their children. Matt was the last of three boys. Routinely around the dinner table on an evening, their Father would test the boys randomly on general knowledge. Wallace was a history teacher and tended to lean towards that when asking his questions. Their mother was a mathematics and English teacher, which likewise tended to be her focus on questions. Penalties for wrong answers weren't severe, or cruel; they were usually washing the dishes or other menial household chores. The boys rarely failed to learn something at dinner time.

Wallace had a study which seconded as an office, to which the boys were not generally permitted to enter. Its walls were covered with bookcases full of books, mostly hardback and more or less to do with history. There was a desk, a couch and a small drinks cabinet. There was one of two ways the Daniels boys could get in the room; one was in the event of disciplinary measures being handed to them, the second was covertly. On one evening, when Matt was 11, he had trouble sleeping, and after being laid for an age looking at the ceiling, he snuck downstairs and into the study. On the desk, he found an essay his Father was partway through. The title was "The History of The Star Fleet Corps of Engineers." The Daniels family weren't ignorant to the organisation etc. They didn't have any ties to it. The Federation was a different matter, and there wasn't any way to not be aware of the Federation.

The essay named Engineers such as Commander Charles Tucker, Captain Montgomery Scott, and many others. The actions they'd taken was fantastic, their contributions to Star Fleet and its advancement was enormous. A spark of fascination changed the young man's life and that day would unknowingly send him into the direction his life would take. After that, Matt would obtain books of his own and read as much data as he could about engineers and engineering. Daniels took his studies very seriously at high school and often attended after school clubs for craft and designs. He had no trouble getting the grades he needed to make an application to Star Fleet Academy; there was no other job for the young Daniels.

Star Fleet Academy

The Academy was amazing and making friends was easy, as it always had been for him. He was highly sociable and loved to rebel a little; his upbringing had been quite strict but very loving, that he never doubted. This new rebellion was only active during downtime, never in the class, at least nothing that would cause a major issue. He showed a keen interest in ship construction and listed it as a choice of assignment, but his skills as an Engineer could be put to fair use anywhere. During his training at SFA, Matt was noted for his teamwork approach to problems, he gladly helped those in need and that suggested to them he might be fit for a leadership role of some sort in time. However, Daniels made it clear if he were to lead it would only be as an Engineer, he had no desire to be the Captain of the Enterprise like James T Kirk or Jean Luc Picard. He felt he was a new version of Montgomery Scott, though he never expected to reach such fame as the great man, nor was he cocky enough to admit that feeling.

The Cadet loved to dive into projects, constructing and the like, he obtained old components where possible and dismantled them to study their inner-workings. He also as a hobby liked to try and improve on the designs of components or recondition them to work for longer. Usually, a piece of technology would be recycled and a new one would be constructed. But it occurred to Matt that one day they, the service, might not have access to new parts for one reason or another and old parts might need to be used as a result. During one experiment with a power pack, a fellow Cadet accidentally applied power to quickly, and Daniels was badly burned as a result. He bore no malice to Clarissa Gillan, it was just an accident and he knew that. But it sure hurt. Matt was disappointed at not receiving top of the class (TOTC), but he was happy enough to graduate and get serving Star Fleet.

Post Graduation Service

After graduation as a Midshipman, the Engineer was sent to the Berlin facility. There he received extra training and progressed through his career and moved to ground assignments or starbases, and occasionally he went on space assignments for various reasons.

As a Lieutenant, Matt served at Utopia Planitia, as part of the upgrade and refitting department. During that time in his career, a massive Borg attack took place, and many people the Engineer had met and in some cases befriended, were lost to the enemy.

After the attack, Matt had trouble with his mindset; it was nothing psychological, though he briefly spoke to a Counsellor. It was suggested that he might have some sort of survivors guilt and possibly felt he needed a new path in his career. After some thought about his career, Matt decided that a change would be good and prompted him to seek a starship assignment...
